Last week the top four GOP nomination candidates skipped the African-American debate at Morgan State University in Baltimore. Let's run down that list of debate-skippers again: Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, Mitt Romney, and Fred Thompson.
Debate moderator Tavis Smiley, of PBS fame, told CNN:
"They're trying to go, these front-runners, these Republican front-runners, trying to go through this entire primary process and never have to address voters of color and never be queried by journalists of color. And I think in the most multicultural, multiracial, multiethnic America ever, that, quite frankly, is unacceptable."
Here's Giuliani telling our friends at the Christian Broadcasting Network why he missed the Smiley debate.
My favorite part of Giuliani's excuse:
"When we say scheduling, it doesn't mean you can't change the schedule, of course you can. ... I had to do seven fundraisers today. I have to do seven fundraisers tomorrow. I don't know if the debate's today or tomorrow. I couldn't have possibly canceled three or four of them. It would have thrown off our entire campaign plan."
John Ehrenfeld of Brave New Films did a little investigative journalism of his own. Here's his discovery.
Maybe Giuliani, and the others, should spend a little more time with their constituents instead of celebrities. Was rubbing elbows with Bo Derek and Dennis Miller and pocketing $100,000 really worth snubbing an entire race of constituents?

Why waste your time on those fools. They vote however Jessie tells them to. Can't none of them think for them selves. Over the cliff they'll go, one after the other. God bless President George Bush.

This is a time when we need to remember the masses. Not the masses of money, THE MASSES! The people! Of all the things you might want to toss into the basket when criticizing Rudy, RACIST is damn well not one of them. I'm part of the masses and I don't like it one bit.
Smiley needs to grow up and realize that Rudy doesn't even run his own schedule. His manager or publicist or agent does. Bitch about it to them, don't put it on here. You'll see Rudy in plenty of debates. Don't cry spilt milk just because he didn't get to yours.
Did you cancel it because they ALL couldn't come? Did you reschedule for a time that WAS convenient for EVERYONE?
Grow up, set an example.--isn't that what educational institutions teach us???
......oops, maybe you were absent that day Smiley.

Democratic Party Maintains Solid Image Advantage Over GOP
Public Prefers Demcratic Party to Republican for handing terrorism, military security.
Public attitudes toward the two major political parties have not changed much in recent months. That's good news for the Democratic Party, which moved into superior image position when compared to the Republican Pary more than a year ago.
Americans not only contiure to view the Democratic Party more favorably than the Republican Party in general terms, but they also choose the Democratic party as the preferred party for maintaining the Nation's Economic prosperity.
And, in a departure from recent history, Americans see the Democrats as the political party better able to protect the country form terrorism.
According to Gallup's annual Governance survey, conducted Sept 14-16, 2007, the Democratic Party enjoys a 15-point lead over the REpublicans in overall favorablility, 53% vs 38%.
