On the heels of last month's Kyl-Lieberman amendment that designated Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps as a foreign terrorist organization, the Bush administration announced unilateral sanctions against Iran yesterday.

Hillary Clinton supported the move, saying that it strengthens America's hand diplomatically.

Chris Dodd and John Edwards have issued statements critical of the sanctions. The National Review Online has the reaction of the Democratic presidential candidates to the new sanctions.
In a recent trip to Tehran, Russian president Vladimir Putin made some very ominous statements about a potential attack.

From Asia Times Online:
The barely reported highlight of Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Tehran for the Caspian Sea summit last week was a key face-to-face meeting with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Crooks and Liars has video of Senator Webb's appearance on hardball. Webb believes that the administration is trying to pass resolutions like the Kyl-Lieberman amendment that they will use later to justify an invasion of Iran.

China has spoken out against the sanctions, but denies they have a deal to sell fighter jets to Iran.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
