Accidental President Gerald Ford, in a courageous new tell-all called 'Write It When I'm Gone: Remarkable Off-the-Record Conversations with Gerald R. Ford," calls Bill Clinton a "helluva salesman" and a better politician than even John F. Kennedy. He also calls him a "sex addict" and says he should check into a sex-addiction clinic. His wife, Betty, couldn't agree more. "A lot of men have gone through the treatment with a lot of success," she adds. "But he won't do it, because he's in denial."
After the Monica Lewinsky scandal broke and impeachment proceedings began, Ford says Clinton called him. "He said he needed my help and wanted to know if I could help." Ford agreed to help, as long as Clinton admitted to perjury. When Clinton declined to do that, Ford considered it "a character flaw."
The real power in this power couple, Ford believed, came from Hillary. "She's stronger and tougher than he is." And he predicted, "Hillary is gonna be on the ticket in '04 or '08, one or the other, you can write that down."
But the former President stops short of guaranteeing the win. "I don't think the country is ready for a lady President," he said.
The rest of the book's "remarkable off-the-record" conversations have to do with bogeying with a 3-wood on a 250-yard Par 4 and how Mulligans should be outlawed.
B. Brandon Barker is the author of the novel Operation EMU.
