This morning, a collective gasp of dismay was heard coming from the Republican party candidates for president. The news? Texas congressman Ron Paul has set a new GOP single-day fundraising record. In a 24-hour period Mr. Paul raised $4.2 Million dollars through on-line donations. The astonishing total suddenly has people wondering: Is this guy for real? Though he may not win the Republican nomination, his candidacy can no longer be written off as "the longest of long shots." He's raising top-tier money, and attracting thousands of new supporters every week, in part due to a strong performance on the Tonight Show (see below). Much to the disdain of the GOP establishment, one thing has become certain about Mr. Paul, he will have an effect on the race.
Get the new PD toolbar! So how did Paul do it? Who are these hordes of internet supporters that he is reaching? Well, according to Reuters they are all around us. A recent survey found that 80% of adults now regularly use the internet. And many of them are impressed with Paul's candor and consistency. Say what you will about the merits of his positions, but he is nothing if not steadfast in his reasoning.
Greg McNeilly had a good post about Mr. Paul's transparent approach to fundraising and spending, and it underlines a central aspect of the Texas congressman's appeal. With "Dr. No," as Paul is known, you know what you're going to get. He's certainly not a flip-flopper.
As to whether abandoning Iraq and Afghanistan, or abolishing the IRS and the Department of Education are good ideas (never mind whether the latter items have a snowball's chance in hell of passing muster in congress) almost seems beside the point. Mr. Paul has become a symbol of revolt for voters tired of politics as usual. This modern day Guy Fawkes is rising in stature faster than any other candidate. Will he play the role of spoiler? Win the nomination out right? Even become president? Yesterday showed that ignoring Ron Paul (Ron Paul George and Ringo, as i like to call him) is not a smart move.

Thank you for your unbiased coverage of him. He has given me hope for once in the last 20 years of voting.

If Paul gets the Republican nomination, it will be the first time I have ever voted for a Republican for President. No, I don't agree with all of his positions, but I admire the strength of his convictions, and he doesn't seem like a panderer. As a country, we need someone new - the last 16 years have left a bad taste in many mouths.

There's a photo doing the rounds within the Paul supporters that shows a guy with a sign that reads "Dr Paul cured my apathy." It's very true, for many of us. He really is a breath of fresh air. A genuine man, speaking the truth, and not even a hint of BS or pretension. Please, readers, take the time to take an *honest*, decent look at him. You won't be disappointed. He's probably this country's last hope of turning around from a very dangerous track. You owe it to yourself, and your children to spend some time reviewing him.

Rep. Ron Paul, M.D.'s integrity is 100 % clear, so is his understanding of our trampled U.S. Constitution. He is America's political messiah ! Heavenly Father, protect this great statesman and deliver him to victory, America needs him more than ever in her history.

The only true candidate I'd consider voting for over a democratic candidate.

The "Can Ron Paul get the GOP nomination" question is a red herring. No, he can't -- because he is the antithesis of everything the GOP has come to represent, He is honest, brilliant, he cares about this country and ONLY enough about money to be concerned about the threat of bankruptcy we face, thanks to Bush. Paul SAYS he has no intent of bolting, and running as an independent. But there is wiggle room aplenty here -- and, increasingly, the funds to wiggle. His views are certainly not all mine, but I would vote for him in a heartbeat -- and hope for the opportunity.

Ron Paul cured my apathy...seriously.
If he were to win, it would be the first time in a LONG time that a smart, honest man, not a divisive, corrupt political party was running the country.

I was truly amazed when I heard Ron Paul on NPR a few weeks ago. I am from Texas, in Harris County, and previiously I had heard the name, but did not know anything about him. What a breath of fresh air. This guy sticks to his guns. He says one thing today, and tomorrow he says the same thing and next year, his position isn't going to change. I think Ron Paul offers a fresh look and new ways to solve old problems. NO flip flop.

Ron Paul is our new president. We need change and he can provide it. He will work for people that are willing to help themselves. This man will make changes that will improve the lives of many in this nation, instead of find ways to get all we have. I hope to see him at the top real soon, and for people to see this man and what he has to bring to this nation. God Bless America by blessing America with Ron Paul as their leader.

Ron Paul is likely the only candidate that is not controlled by the money institutions in the US that have run the government for many years. Our constitution, our borders, our freedoms and our financial assets have been and are continually being taken away as a plan of the neo conservatives to create a one world economy.

Say what you like, but Ron Paul is a real Republican, not to mention smart and well educated. The rest are BS artists looking for attention and power - more fascists than anything (sad to say). Chicken Hawks using fear to manipulate the herd. Read history of Germany's Wimar Republic. Scary similarity.

Ron Paul is the last best chance we have left to reclaim and preserve our great nation. He is the people's candidate. All the others are moneyed powers' pets! Wake up America. Vote Ron Paul before it's too late!

Ron Paul should be a write in if the GOP won't sponsor him. The party is having issues already, they should just accept a different view point.
I vote EVERY election, and I intend at this point to vote for Ron Paul. The GOP would have to send me something a whole lot better, and I doubt they have anything.

I know Republicans like to depict Ron Paul as a "nut," but the reality is that he answers direct questions with direct answers. Further, he actually believes in supporting and defending the Constitution, the oath that is required of the President of the United States.
No wasteful spending internationally. No wasteful government. Civil liberty at home (including for homosexuals since they are Americans too).
The man is what was once called a STATESMAN.

This nation desperately needs someone like Dr. Paul to do away with the carpetbaggers, the thieves, the despots and the liars from both sides of the aisle. Once Paul is elected, let's indict, arrest, try and send to prison those who trampled on our rights, on the Constitution, who sold our country to the highest bidders. Praise Yahweh for Dr. Paul. May Your hand, Almighty Father, protect him.

Ron Paul is as a true American. Our country is in an identity crisis. We have bred a few generations of dependent people that only look to government instead of themselves for solutions to their problems. We need Dr. Paul to fix this identity crisis and bring American principles back. This might be our last chance at liberty and I do not want to die quite yet!

I spent the weekend working a crowd of 50 thousand people at the Micanopy Fall Festival in Florida. I walked back and forth with a 4 foot by 2 foot Ron Paul for President sign. Am I crazy? NO. I am very excited to finally have someone to back that I believe can make the world a better place for generations to come. If you feel the same way I do..go to Ronpaul2008.com and make a donation. Then order some signs and literature and get out there and spread the message...It will work!
