Ex-U.S. Senator John Edwards (D-NC) has launched his second Iowa TV ad. The :30 second ad can be seen here:
This ad, heralded in an e-mail missive to supporters from the campaign's cyber guru Joe Trippi promised it'd have people "talking" and show that Edwards will really shake-up Washington. The ad falls flat, much like the candidate is doing. But what's really got people yakking is Edward's refusal to support the Democratic nominee for President should it be Hillary Clinton. In response to the standard question, would you support (insert candidate's name) if they were the nominee, most candidates respond "I am a Democrat/Republican I will support the nominee."
Even U.S. Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) said he'd support he nominee (with it the implication it would be Rudy Giuliuni) before he dropped out of his Republican Presidential quest. Brownback and Rudy have a core difference on the issue of abortion. But in their differences, party unity still won out.
But not with John Edwards and the Democrats or at least with Clinton.
Edwards responded to a reporter when asked about supporting Hillary Clinton if she were the nominee:
"I'm not willing to talk about that at this point," [Edwards] said, waiting silently until the next question was asked."
An average of the national polls show the race at Clinton 45.7, Obama 23.2 and Edwards 12.4%. In Iowa, Clinton 29.9, Obama 24.8 and Edwards 19.1%. And in New Hampshire, Clinton 39.3, Obama 21.7% and Edwards 12.7%
U.S. Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) has injected himself into this story by issuing a statement in response to the Edwards lack of unity with fellow Democratic candidates, stating:
"I am surprised at just how angry John has become. This is not the same John Edwards I once knew. Of course, we should all come together to support the nominee. I wonder which of the Republicans John prefers to Hillary?"
Craig Crawford of the Congressional Quarterly is now suggesting that if John Edwards looses Iowa, that he'll endorse U.S. Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) in order to block Clinton.
It's hard to remember the last time someone won a partisan primary when showing so little graciousness and ultra-radicalism.
UPDATE (11/14/07): CNN reports that a day after Edwards would not answer the question about supporting Clinton as the Democratic nominee, he answered that he would support her.
If a left wing Clinton cutout like Edwards refuses to support Bill (oops i mean Hill) then that should tell Dems they are really in bad shape.

Oh, PLEASE. Can a candidate talk about his own candidacy for a while since the freakin' primaries haven't even started yet? Has political reporting sunk to the point that the refusal to answer a totally irrelevant question amounts to a tantrum?
Sure, Obama said "I'll support the nominee ... I intend it to be me," but this was a deflection that had the same information value as Edwards' non-response.
This is hackwork of the worst kind, whether it's echoing spin from the Clinton camp or just hack-journalistic laziness.
You want to know what a tantrum is? Watch the preening blowhards on Fox News for five minutes.
P.S. Yes, I like Edwards. And I'm no fan of Hillary. But I WILL support her if she's the nominee. Compared to the malevolent pinheads of the GOP she's King Arthur driving an ice cream truck.

Of course Senator Edwards will support the nominee but no one has crowned Senator Clinton yet and I hope they don't have too. We don't want to lose another election.

Hey Mr.Edwards, give it up, there is no way that you are going to be the leader of the free world, the Comander-in-Chief of the most powerful military on the planet and the one to orchestrate the economic growth of the most productive economies on the face of the earth! One who never met a comb he didn't like, who spends most of his time fluffing his hair in front of the nearest mirror, can forget about being President of the United States! Hillary will kick your butt!! Then the rest of the county will send Hillary and the rest of you pathetic democrtats to the trash heap!

As you might remember, over the weekend you had a column...something like "Bits and Tidbits of the Week". In it I shared a letter with you that I sent to John Edward's campaign about his incredibly negative campaign and asked "What happened to the affable guy from 2004?"
Well, on Monday night, instead of answering my e-mail...the Edward's campagn asked for a donation for this particular TV ad and if I was willing to donate at least $250 (So they could get the matching public funds.) I could get an early look at the Ad.
I reminded them of my e-mail and told them if no one could address that, I certainly wasn't going to be making a donation.
He may not just be lacking sincerity...maybe a soul as well.
Sincerely and respectfully,
Mr. Clark

this article is ridiculous and very bias. what a joke! hes not even in the primaries yet! what kind of a dumb ass question is it to answer!
remember at this point where the polls had john kerry? the writer of this article has no sense of fairness what so ever. hes a joke. john edwards isn't held together by party lines. he takes no money from corporations and would be the best for america. the writer obviously does not like him, or his on the payroll of the lobbyists who wish to control washington in '08.

If Hillary wins the Democratic nomination, Edwards shouldn't be asked to publicly support Clinton. He's too negative and would drive away voters like me to vote for Clinton.

WOW, can you imagine? Tell congress they might loose something and watch how fast they will pass it. Next, tell them they will lose their political pay for life if they dont help make Social Security a better way of life for senior citizens who will be counting on it. again, watch how quickly it will get fixed.
It's time to stop paying our congressmen for things they will never do. MAKE THEM PAY

After 7 years of Republican rule, how can anyone make fun of any Democrat that is running for President. If you put another Republican in office it will be disasterous. Better put your brains to work folks....

I`m talking as a American and as a veteran,I`ve fought under both Bush`s and found out all they care about is their bottom-line,Money(oil).They don`t care about the people that think they`re fighting for Liberation and Freedom;because, that is a True Lie.I firmly believe that Mr.Edwards truly has the Balls to make the difference an bring America back as a super power and the world can look up to us again.Mr.Edwards doesn`t waiste his time crapping on the other candidates an always talks about our problem issues. We need somebody who truly cares about important issues and who will fight for them,Mr.Edwards you truly are that man....

While I like Mr. Edwards as a second tier darkhorse, I am quite unsure of his ability to win a general election. If Americans will ONLY elect a white man to the Presidency, then he is the fallback candidate. If we have matured enough to have a woman or a man of color as our President, he can be Secretary of State. What I see likely is a Clinton-Obama White House. Whether Hilary or Barack takes the top spot is pretty immaterial but that one-two punch would simultaneously capture the black vote, the buppie vote, the women's vote, young progressives, New Yorkers, Illinois, all the trade unions, college students, Republican women. It would definitely LOSE the angry white men contingent....but then again, those old farts and rednecks are going to vote for Rudy anyway.
SO, the question is this; will their COLLECTIVE negatives be more than their collective positives in wrapping up the vote? Clinton should bring New York, Massachusetts, DC, Maryland, Virginia, California, Delaware, Iowa, New Hampshire. Obama should bring Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, any state with a large city and a large minority population. SO, likely, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, should all go Democratic. The battleground states will be Pennsylvania, Texas, Florida, Ohio.
Thompson takes Tennessee but I do not see Romney taking Massachusetts or Guiliani taking New York over Hillary. Until the shakeout occurs on the Repubs side, the general election will be hard to call. Likely, you may see a Guiliani-Thompson ticket going against Clinton-Obama. So, two Falstaffian, balding old men running an anti woman, anti minority campaign is likely. Wonder what Swift Boat lies they will pull out of their collective cakeholes this time around?
The reason that I see a Hillary-Barack pairing is that those two capture close to 60% of the Democratic faithful. The Democrats numerically outnumber those reprobate Republicans by an almost 3 to 1 margin. It is ONLY when we are motivated to vote that Democrats show up to represent and vote in large numbers. So, all you other progressive, get up out of bed on Election Day and vote with your feet. Show up! DO you civic duty and put a progressive Democrat back into the WHite House for another 8 years.
Those inchoate Republicans have screwed our economy, spent the budget surplus for years to come and have never balanced the budget. It is our duty to send their duly appointed ID10ts BACK to their villages where their posts have stood open waiting for them to return to their rightful roles. It is time for us to put our country right again, to correct their mistakes and fix their failures.
I participate in the democratic process. I vote, post yard signs, canvass neighborhoods, engage in lively discussions and am a chief election judge in my precinct. IF you all do not agree with my point of view and I expect that some of you may not, then get off your spotty bums & work for the candidate of your choice. Otherwise, if you are not willing to motivate yourself to contribute, callate.
Even though I do not agree with conservatives, I respect those sufficiently motivated to get out there and incite others to vote their conscience. That is my two cents. I will take my soapbox with me now. Got to do the laundry, you know.

AOL is using their Media News Power to bad mouth the Democrats, in a silent way. I see no tantrums here except for the AOL media claiming this is a tantrum. I'm real close to dropping AOL and getting a new ISP. keep your pie hole shut AOL, or your opinions to your self. Media everywhere is suppose to be fair and balanced. So ZIPP ITT!!!!
