As promised, I have the second half of my interview with Brave New Films' Robert Greenwald. There's an interesting bit of coincidence here. As I was interviewing Robert last night about Fox News and Rudy Giuliani, he got a call to appear on MSNBC regarding the breaking Judith Regan story. That story just happens to tie together Greenwald's favorite 2 bogeymen.
Judith Regan's lawsuit describing FOX's support for Giuliani is no surprise to anyone watching the love fest between FOX and Rudy. Hannity has thrown a fundraiser for Rudy. The fact that they have chosen one Republican over another should make everyone pissed off at FOX.
In this second half of our interview, we talked more about his "Real Rudy" series of films, and I sensed that his campaign against Hizzoner came from a different place than the Fox pieces. While the Fox issue seems to be more of an intellectual affront, the Rudy pieces seem to stem from a deeper, more personal outrage.
You can hear the whole interview at the end of this post. Here are some choice excerpts. Some are paraphrased for brevity.
Tommy Christopher: What's the impetus behind the "Real Rudy" films? Why the ire at Rudy?
Robert Greenwald: A couple of things...being a New Yorker...Once a New Yorker, always a New Yorker, ..and I remember very clearly (my friends and relatives' and colleagues') anger and pain and outrage as Rudy over the years has hijacked 9/11 and turned a tragedy into his own personal platform both for making money and for running for office...and I started to hear these horrific stories from family members..many of whom voted for Rudy...who had had their sons killed in 9/11..and they were very upset about the errors, the mistakes, the wrong decisions that he made around 9/11, and the fact that he would then use that to run for President...Then my friend Danny Goldberg was telling me, "Look, the real story is not that he got dressed in drag, or that he married his cousin, the real story is the 9/11 distortion."
TC: Is there anybody refuting the content of your films?
RG: We go to great lengths to make these films factually airtight. So when Rudy attacks us..what he does is like Fox,..he calls names. He says, this is the irony, he says I (Greenwald) am a profiteer. Now, this is a double irony, this is a man that has made millions off of 9/11, and I..volunteer..take not a penny for this..that's the best they can do (to) respond..but there's been nothing from his campaign,..from any reporter..or anyone saying, "You're wrong about this data."..at one point he was making a million dollars a day profiting from 9/11.
TC: You get on an elevator, there's Rudy, what do you say?
RG: ...I would ask him how he can look at himself in the mirror (pause) when he gets up in the morning...knowing the extraordinary mistakes and misjudgments that he's made, and then how he can run to be President of the United States on such an amazing record of disaster.
Robert Greenwald On Mukasey: Horriible. It is disgusting that it was voted on by 2 Democrats...we will look back on those who voted for it with shame and embarrassment and anger.
On Hillary and Barack's lack of leadership on FISA, etc.: ...Grover Norquist says, "If President Bush doesn't do something, because it's too politically difficult..I blame..us, because we need to make it politically possible for the politicians to do certain things..."
(Yes, Robert Greenwald just quoted Grover Norquist. Now that's fair and balanced!)
On ENDA: There are times when it's better to lose and make the bigger point...and times when you need to..get legislation through..
On Glenn Beck:...we absolutely want to go after some of the aberrant individuals like Glenn Beck... but as horrible as he is, it's not the same as an entire network dedicated philosophically to one point of view.
On Mainstream Hackery:..I hope we have the resources to go after..some of the networks when they fall into the "Iraq Pattern" around Iran...
I recommend listening to the interview, there's a lot of shading. This second half of the interview really convinced me that Robert, right or wrong, is heartfelt in his motivation, and not simply a publicity junkie or anything like that. He was very generous with his time, and was a good sport about some tough questions. I hope to do it again soon. I'll end the piece with a quote from Robert on yesterday's article:
On Glenn Beck:...we absolutely want to go after some of the aberrant individuals like Glenn Beck... but as horrible as he is, it's not the same as an entire network dedicated philosophically to one point of view.

Perhaps normal could be defined as one who is able to use proper punctuation and spelling. That would certainly exclude you from being normal on both counts, wouldn't it? Normal is such a relative term and could be debated upon until the end of time. Idiot is defined as an utterly foolish and senseless person. Tommy is neither. I may not agree with many of his policital views but at least he has them and defends them with fact not emotion. You, however, are the picture of idiocy since you are both foolish and senseless.

Mr. Greenwald's obsession with FOX is just silly. I don't watch FOX either because we do have other choices, don't we? Greenwald makes it sound like we live in North Korea where FOX is the only choice and it is being piped in over loud speakers. Don't like FOX? Turn it off and watch what you want. The remote control is a great invention. As to Rudy Giuliani profiting from 9/11, I don't really like it but he is hardly the only one who has. Folks have written books, made documentaries, and Oliver Stone's movie about it made millions.

More sleaze should come out about Guiliani's life like hiring his "pal" the ousted pedophile priest who is currently working at his firm, his affairs while Mayor of NYC and married, wife #3 who he met at a cigar bar in NYC while he was married and Mayor and then paraded her around publicly to events, his estrangement from his children and Kerik who he mentored, brought into public office and was a partner in his firm, who is now indicted on fraud, corruption charges. He has such poor judgment in his personal life, professional life and public life. He's not qualified to be the president and lacks the ability to lead this nation. And I agree, he's only running on 911 and using the tragedy to make himself a hero. He did what anyone would do, show up. I hope the people in this country learn ALL the facts about him. Mitt Romney is the only candidate who can win the GOP nomination and become president. He has a proven record of leadership while he was Governor of Mass. and has experience running a state government.

BUFFY- Wow! Your insight on the issue astounds me! Apparently you are not normal either since you can not spell “political” correctly. Let me help you out Political is P-O-L-I-T-I-C-A-L. I’m sure it is hard for you to have political views when you can not even spell the word but at the risk of being foolish and senseless I will assume you can comprehend basic elementary logic . Normal is hardly a relative term. Normal does not change with circumstance. Normal is defined as: usual, customary, to follow a fixed standard. Glen Beck embodies logical, reality based, and slander free opinion and thought process. That is normal in my book any day of the week. Tommy is an idiot because he foolishly does not know the definition of normal and senselessly fails to acknowledge Glen Beck is normal. What I did not know was you were an idiot as well.

Go 14ROMNEY- Typical liberal wanting Typical liberal wanting to give grammar lessons instead of focusing on the issues. Buffy you might consider this do not throw stones when you live in a glass house. Glen Beck is the only HNN employee that isn’t stuck up the left wings a**. That is why they attack him. Libs hate Fox because it does not bow down to them and spew anti war/Bush stories all day. I vote for Romney as well.

Supporting Rudy by Republicans shows that they are more about power not about principles. That is terrible, and the party will pay dearly for it. First, they will lose the general election, and secondly they will lose the principle upon which they stand. A double tragedy indeed!

Well if I frighten her off you will still have at least one female reader - me! Still, I will be humble and apologize to Buffy for pointing out her grammatical hypocrisy and that the American education system failed her. I will even apologize for pointing out her mental shortcomings by calling her an idiot. However, keep in mind I only do so because you asked so very nice. LOL

Hey, glad to hear it! I'm gettin' to be a regular babe magnet! OK, seriously, educate me. You're a woman, you're for Romney. What's his record on women's rights? I ask because I don't know. Also, are women's issues important to you, and if so, which ones?

Tommy- well just hope no one decides to have a polarization party! Romney is very strong on family values ie: making sure children have two parents, abstinence education, making sure women are aware of their workplace rights r/t maternity leaves, and etc. He supported a bill while Gov. that would require businesses to hire more women and minorities - I’m unsure of outcome on that. Opposes abortion rights , except in cases of rape, incest, or to protect the life of the mother. Supports overturning Roe v Wade but says legislation should be up to states. He has set up a healthcare plan in MA to include all citizens getting private healthcare and says he would encourage this to all states as president. Also, he said that MA plan was not perfect but more of a demo to be improved on. These facts are important to me because I feel if abstinence and family planning was more discussed and available to underprivileged women there would be less single mothers and thus less welfare etc. I am opposed to a pro choice but against total pro life. There are certain circumstances that abortion may be creditable (mentioned above by Romney.) I think that a women should have equal opp to get jobs but not more opp like affirmative action but equal ie best and most qualified person. I support requiring all business to give medical leave for maternity w/ attention to how long job must be held. Six weeks is not enough. The Mormon Religion has bad reputation on women’s rights. However, you ask a LDS women about why they can not serve in the Mormon priesthood and they all accept and support that fact. We all know that women’s rights is not Romney’s main platform but he does address it. His strong points are immigration, all fiscal issues, healthcare, and family. Women issues are not my deciding factor - it is immigration and fiscal.

Hey, I didn't call Beck "Aberrant", Greenwald did! I agree, but it wasn't me that said it. OK, the positions you laid out for Romney on women's issues are not terrible for a Republican, but I have 2 huge problems: Why no exception for the health of the mother? That puts him to the right of mainstream "pro-life" thought. Number 2: What is "abstinence education"? Can we get the government to pay for me to learn how not to do other stuff? I already can't bake a souffle to save my life, so that's out.

I already can't bake a souffle to save my life, so that's out. .-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Opposes abortion rights , except in cases of rape, incest, or to protect the life of the mother.” That was in above entry. It includes mothers health. With exception to Rudy G. the other candidates esp. Huckabee makes no exceptions to my knowledge. Romney has not gone into a in depth explanation of his plan to promote abstinence ed. My view abstinence education would include literature on STD’S and the long term effects of contracting, education about emotional consequences from teen sex and peer pressure education - teens who have sex usually have low self esteem and are more likely to perform other acts from peer pressure, and awareness education of pregnancy - financial, emotional, physical. Many schools already have a Health Ed class but the focus is primarily on safe sex (you know the condom on the banana demo) instead of abstinence. All above should be implemented through the Health Ed. Class in high schools. Some schools have an elective class where you are given a plastic baby with real life features including faux feces. To promote abstinence you do not have to involve religion and infringe on the atheist sects. This can be done free of religion. I was a school nurse for 3 years and you would be surprised at the ignorance of teens. They throw terms like herpes around jokingly but have no idea what it really is until one of them actually gets it. They think STD’s are something that can be magically fixed with a pill. The have no ideas the implications having a baby when they are 16 entails. They think a baby is like their pet dog. For abstinence education to be effective it has to be given equal time as safe sex education.
I wish the government could teach me how not to pay taxes. LOL. As for souffle, I suppose Romney would be little help and I know I would

Heheheh - Giuliani is a horn dog - everyone in New York City knows that. He has a problem keeping his lust in his pants. He diddlies the ladies with ease, and when caught by his wife, he plays the "we are having difficulties" card then promptly divorces, only to remarry and diddle some more. He "objectifies" women, enjoys a woman on his arm as an ornament - no more no less. Other than that - a woman only means the triangle between her legs to Giuliani.
As far as Giuliani being tough on crime - another joke. Bill Clinton put in over 150,000 more cops in the nation, a lot of them right in New York City during Giuliani term as Mayor. Crime went down all over America, including New York City, because Clinton hired on those cops. Bush rescinded that funding, and thus we have increased crime. Pure facts folks.

Warren Buffet, the second richest man in the world, agrees that most wealthy men or women pay less in taxes than the average middle class person. Last year, comparing his tax percent of 17% to his receptionist’s tax percent of 31%, he took on a quantitative survey that indicates that rich people pay only in the 15-20% tax bracket, while the rest of the population pays in the upper 20s and lower 30s percent. He is challenging the Forbes 400 list of wealthy individuals to compare their tax rate to their receptionist and if that wealthy individual pays more – he will give away $1000000.00 to the individual. He states that he is tired of corporate America expecting a handout from the government – it takes away incentive and paves the way for the wealthy to expect handouts/payoffs from government, a nice way of saying bribes and corporate welfare.

Another case of a Liberal with a Cause is more dangerous than a Preacher with Bad Hair.
The fact that he drives the left wing nutjobs over the edge even more than Bush is reason enough to vote for Giuliani.
