Surprise Endorsement by Des Moines Register

word...McCain is Good...Romney is good...Hillary...not so good!

Low taxes, less goverment, responsible fiscal budget, honest goverment, better health care. Ex-Veteran Doctor Ron Paul who has been in Congress 30 years doesn't just give lip service, just look at his record because it imputes to all of the above.

I love McCain I think he is a great guy but I do not think he is right to be president. 1 he will divide the party on the immigration issue. 2. He does not have the stamina or funds to compete with the Big O or the Big C machine.

I disagree with him on waterboarding. I do not know of one person that would not use the technique if it were their child, mom, dad, etc at stake. Waterboarding is reserved for cases less severe opts do not produce results. Anyone who performs the technique must first be subjected to it themselves. It does not leave any perm damage. If we choose to take everything that is considered harsh or torture off the table then we will soon be scrutinizing our prison system. I do not know any prisoner that will not say prison is torture.
Also, we are not dealing with a civilized war where the Geneva Con. is adhered to. We are dealing with terrorist that disregard the rules of engagement and use innocent children as bombs or bait.
I have great admiration and respect for McCain for his service but as a soldier he should know better than to discuss such matters on TV. & take such options off the table. He is skewed by his own torture….God Bless Him! But, Romney was dead on to not talk about and to not take the option off the table.

I should clarify that I do not see water boarding as torture and I do not agree with any tactics that leave permanent damage (actual torture.)

I was surprised by BOTH endorsements. I first was eligible to vote in 1980 and I voted for Jimmy Carter. I never really paid attention to politics much until this particular election cycle.

I am now 45-years-old and suddenly I have an interest in politics? It didn't seem like that would happen in my life.

I am in favor of Sen. Clinton. This last administration has sort of forced me to take an interest in politics. No candidate that I can recall fits better ideologically with me than Sen. Clinton.

With that said, I have been working on my plan "B". I do not believe in any of the other Democratic candidates and I will not do what I did in 2004 again...which was vote for Kerry/Edwards. I didn't believe in them and President Bush was out of the question. I should not have voted in 2004. So, my plan "B" is educating myself about Republican candidates.

I started with Sen. John McCain, then to Mitt Romney and am finishing up on Fred Thompson. (Then, onto the next Republican.) I like both McCain and Romney...Fred Thompson I am having some trouble with, but I am not done yet. I was willing to settle on Mitt Romney because I "saw" that Sen. McCain was unelectable. This gives me a reason to rethink that view.

A couple quotes from the Des Moines Register on each of their endorsements and I will wrap it up.

Sen. Clinton:

Sen. McCain:

"McCain is most ready to lead America in a complex and dangerous world and to rebuild trust at home and abroad by inspiring confidence in his leadership."

"McCain would enter the White House with deep knowledge of national-security and foreign-policy issues. He knows war, something we believe would make him reluctant to start one."

They are both good people and deserving in their own way of their endorsements.

With the wintry weather kicking into high gear in the Midwest, the candidates are finding it increasingly difficult to meet and greet the crowds. Those who didn't do their foot-work earlier in the campaign are having to increasingly rely on the media to convey their message.

One candidate emerges as a clear winner in this regard for on her side she has the best political mind in modern times, Bill Clinton. Not to say that Oprah's is lacking in star power, no; but she is not a politician and spending her weekends campaigning for Obama is not a profitable use of her time. Her one weekend stint might not be enough to overshadow Bill Clinton's experience and concerted effort at the national level., unless people ask questions!!


A seasoned politician, Bill transcends the impossible and brings out the best out of a bad situation. Clearly Hillary is the least liked of all the candidates, nevertheless, Bill has managed to get the people to look at him while voting for her. He has managed to convince the masses that by voting for Hill, they are getting him back to the white house. Who can forget?

In short, he has decided to carry her on his shoulders. So let's take a look at this family; let’s find out what Bill has that's such a female magnet and hypnotizes us all to immediately forgive him of his follies as we eagerly await the next.

One question I would like these anchors and so called experts to ask the candidates is: If JFK Jr. was alive today, what would their campaigns look like? Would they even have a campaign given that the odds would be very much in his favor? Fortuitous as it is, or perhaps it's just a convenient coincidence, did either of the candidates have anything to do with his Assassination? Would they have vote for him today if he was alive or would they challenge him?

The Des Moinse registers endorement of Billary and McCain can only be attributed to loyalty rather than intelligence. While reporters generally have an ear for news and the inner workings of their community, the Register's early endorsement is a dissappointment to those associated with the press who see their voice going to waste out of loyalty rather than the intelleigence they have provided.

Go Ron Paul...

As a native New Yorker for 44 years I was delighted when the man who balanced the nation's budget and brought AIDS, Welfare, gay and lesbian rights, the rights of the disabled, and so many other issues to the dinner table of American homes moved to the state I called home. I was also excited when Hillary decided to run for the senate seat vacated by Daniel Patrick Moynihan. I was more impressed by the way Hillary ran her campaign than I was by the way Bill Clinton ran the nation. Hillary crisscrossed the state on her listening tour, convincing Republicans to consider voting for her during her second bid at her senate seat. She proved herself to those upstate Republicans. The very Republicans who overwhelmingly voted for George Bush in 2004-die hard Republicans, voted in large enough numbers to hand Hillary the senate seat a second time. Those of you outside New York State may not know Hillary won her second term to the US Senate with 67% of the state's vote. That's a lot of Republicans. I am certain, after much consideration, Hillary has the ability to lead this nation as a uniter, not a divider. I don't question her experience for one moment. Republicans in the Senate have said she has worked hard to build bridges between the two parties in that chamber. I don't doubt that. I can see why the Des Moines Register endorsed Senator Clinton. She has the international experience, the knowledge base, the life experience working with the poor, with the Children's Aid Society, as an attorney during the Nixon Watergate hearings, the passion, the 8 years in the US Senate, the debacle of the health care legislation , etc. to learn from. She is a quick study and will get that health care legislation through so all Americans can choose to retain their private health care or choose to participate in another form of health care program. That will be between the Congress we elect and her, if we elect her. I will vote for Hillary. I think it is time America elect a woman to undo the damage of a man never qualified to be president in the first place.

As a former New Yorker I had the chance to see Hillary in action in New York. She did an incredible job during 9/11. She did an incredible job for first responders after 9/;11. She worked hard for the disabled in our state. She worked hard for breast cancer survivors in the nation. She not only attends church services, as Billy Graham said, when she was in need after Bill's affair, she held weekly prayer sessions with members of the white house staff. No one ran the sessions. Hillary has the knowledge base and experience that Barack Obama lacks. What do you expect, Obama had 7 years as a state senator. What did that teach him about running the federal government. Then he had two years as a senator. During that time he has been running for president. Hillary has the international contacts that are required to rebuild America's standing in the world. Bill Clinton would be the perfect Ambassador of Good Will for the US, as Hillary has already said he will be starting day one. With the economic woes looming over us, I want a president who will know were to turn for aid in dealing with the economy. One person will be Bill. I take comfort in that. He balanced the budget before he left office. Our country is in a serious crisis, and we need someone with experience to take command. I don't see a commander when i look at Obama. I see a boy in training to lead who needs Oprah at his side to get his message out. I do see a commander in Hillary. No nation will mess with America under her watch.

David Epsen is the man in Iowa politics. Why did he choose to remain neutral? I'm not certain who Thomas Beaumont is, but he asked for the story not reported on C-SPAN and he went underground. This endorsement by the Des Moines Register could be tainted by a truth that they don't have the courage to tell? We know the truth about Obama is "He's wet behind the ears." We know the truth about Hillary is "She's sinking like a stone playing dirty politics inside the party." Did the Clinton loyalists do some arm twisting for this endorsement or did they not want to tell the truth about the sad state of Democratic politics? The truth will set us free.

I just heard the Register's excuse for endorsing Hillary. They said, "Her experience could help bring about the change." Did the register forget, it's not Hillary's experience that she is betting on? Bill Clinton was president and he dropped his pants to show his appreciation for her and America. With Edwards, America gets the best of Clinton and Obama. We get the bonus of not having Bill in the Lincoln Bedroom and Obama can show us he is actually a Democrat. A new way of politics could be code for "I'm neither one." That could also be the sign of a "Selfish Brand of Politics Trying To Take Over?" Too risky. Edwards is the safe choice.

No, I have never undergone water boarding. Have you, to say that it is torture ? Do you understand that it does not leave permanent damage? Would you not use the technique if it were you child or parent being held captive and the person with the information will not tell you the information to save your families life?

I have worked in the school system and then the prison system as a nurse. I heard all the excuses of how prison was torture. An inmate would hold up in his cell. When officers would attempt to extract the inmate he would throw feces and blood (often it would be inmate with Hepatitis or HIV) at the officers and me (trying to give him a sedative.) In order to get them out and keep them from hurting us and themselves the officers used a mace gun. The families would say we were mistreating or torturing these inmates. However, that did not make it so. During riots or fights we used guns with rubber bullets after three warnings to stop and lay down. Again, the families and inmates called this torture. However, it was not.
So, I have two points. #1 everything that someone says is torture is not actually torture. #2 In order to use mace and rubber bullets we first must be trained and then sprayed in the face w/ mace. To use rubber bullets and stun guns we first had to be shocked with the stun gun. I did carry mace, since I am a women that could be overpowered easily by the inmates. I chose to take the courses and was sprayed twice in the face with mace so that I could carry it. I did have to use it on three occasions. And, I believe it saved my life. So, do not be so naive to think that everything the bleeding hearts label as torture is so. Sometimes discomfort is necessary to save lives.

I'm a 50 year old Iowan and I have yet to see the Des Moines Register have a significant effect on an election. They have endorsed a lot of candidates over the years that have never made it locally and nationally. I don't beleive a lot of Iowans care who their political leaders or newspapers endorse.

After these last 7 years of Republican leadership of this country, as an independent voter I am ready for a change.

Unfortunately Senator Hillary Clinton is a North East liberal Democrat. A Northeast liberal Democrat has not been elected to the Whitehouse since JFK in 1960.

Although I would admit being slightly left of center, I do not think the rest of the nation's voting public is willing to go that route. Senator Clinton signed on the the President's "blank cheque" which condoned his illegal invasion of Iraq and was pretty quiet when all the misinformation came out about the President's claims about the danger of Saddam turned out to be totally fabricated. She has also positioned herself farther to the right, just like Bill Clinton did before the mid term elections.

I support Senator John Edwards, and believe he is the most qualified and intelligent to serve as my President. None of these senators running for President have ANY true executive experience, so he is in the same exact place in experience for the job.

But Edwards is from a moderate to conservative area of the country, has run a successful law practice, has a good civil rights record, and believes in the middle class, and protecting their position in America.

Senator Edwards has the best chance to bring in the vast majority of Americans in the middle class and once again look out for our common interests.

My vote is for Edwards, who I believe will appeal to the majority of voters in the General Election in November 2008.
