Ron Paul vs Fred Thompson? You've got to be kidding me. Ron Paul is the most respected "true" conservative in D.C. He is principled, has stood up for the American people, has consistently voted with the Constitution for over 20 years. Fred Thompson is/was a lobbyist, has made movies and been on TV and is at best an average actor. Be honest, have you ever seen him cry, do any impressions, play anybody except Fred Thompson? My point is that Ron Paul is and has been fighting a battle to restore our country to the root values that gave us a fighting chance to become the greatest country on earth. Fred read scripts and used his fame and influence to help very rich special interests. This is why Ron Paul is raising money hand over fist without even trying, because We the People recognize the difference between a charade and a crusade.

Ask yourself why Ron Paul can raise millions from average Americans and media sponsored creations like Fred Thompson fade? Maybe there's something Ron Paul is saying that people like? Freedom, liberty and an honest Candidate are hard not to like.

Fred Thompson's record on federalist issues is, at minimum, equal to Mr. Paul's.

Fred is a war-monger - with no plan to stop our massive deficit spending.

Fred is a tired B movie actor - our country needs a real statesman and someone who believes in our Constitution.

Too bad Fred won't be around after the next couple of weeks in his attempt to "play" I mean become the President. I actually liked Fred and will miss him, funny guy, good rebounder, little slow on defense

Gary - Thanks for repeating my praise for Ron Paul. Do yourself a favor and look up the definitions of Libertarian and Conservative, they are very, very cozy together. Libertarian is not to be confused with Liberal. Ron Paul is a Libertarian, one of the most conservative men in office. He does vote with the Constitution, his voting record is available to all.

Concerning earmarks: He has never voted for them, but since he was elected by the citizens of the State of Texas, he keeps his promises to request projects that help his constituents. He then votes against the legislation. If it passes anyway, some of the Tax dollars that Congress spends will come back to the tax payers in his district. He has been very open about this. You have to work with the system that is in place, while you fight to change it.

I stand by my earlier praise of him - You on the other hand hope that Fred is at least equal to Ron. Not a chance and the money trail shows it! Fred is dead in this election.

Fred Thompson is the only candidate who has the guts to address the financial weakness of the SS system and offer a true plan that will allow my daughters to receive SS 50 years from now. Check out his plan and compare it to the plan of increased payroll tax plan of John Edwards and the totally unrealistic plan of Ron Paul to privatize the entire SS system.

Fred's a method actor. Without a script (like the Great Decider), he is totally lost, i.e., no indepedent thought or convictions of long standing. Fred and Huck are both media creations--their "popularity" will die with the ebb and flow of the biased media spotlight. I agree Gary, at a minimum FDT is as much for State's rights and the Constitution as RP. RP wouldn't be such a bad choice if he weren't so naive about foriegn policy and lacking substance in his plans. Most of his positions on issues as stated on his website lack substance, especially taxes - everyone wants lower taxes and spending. To think that closing down every foriegn military base to fund his agenda is a good idea I must disagree with.
As a former Marine, I am all for streamlining Defense spending and cutting waste because I know it exists in the military, but I also understand how our presence around the world has helped many nations and our national intersts abroad - mainly spreading the cause of freedom and democracy. We can all agree it is in our best interest to promote freedom and democracy around the world, right? In addition, no specifics on taxes and economic growth, just generalities (closing bases) that would never fully exceed and would be blocked for good reason in Congress. FDT has stated specifics, whether you agree or disagree with him, thats the kind of leadership we need. SUPPORT FRED THOMPSON!!

BG? "hate monger" - Get a grip - This is a discussion about two men running for the highest office in our country. One is an actor and lobbyist - Nothing hateful about those facts. The other wants us to deal with facts. Over 600,000 people have been killed in Iraq as a result of our diplomatic mission to give them Freedom. Does this sound like a mission the Iraqi citizens are glad we are on? We cannot "spread" our brand of Democracy at the point of a gun. Ron Paul advocates very sane policies both domestic and foreign. Fred Thompson still believes our own economy is in great shape.

Dave- Please tell me what candidate on either side is not looking for donations in this multi-billion dollar marathon campaign. Fred Thompson got in at the normal time to start a campaign and said from the start that he was not going to play the MSM frenzy game. He is the only one who has come up with responsible doable policies. As I have read in more than one blog, Ron Paul's supporters will lose him any chance he may have had as evidenced in the comments above. As far as his campaign donations go they will probably find sooner rather than later that they were bogus.

Ron Paul's appeal is this: simplistic answers to simplistically-framed questions. There are millions of people out there who resonate with his cartoon approach to the complex problems we face domestically and internationally. And some of those simple (and probably well-meaning) folks have money and send it to their guru.

I will admit that Fred Thompson's campaign has not been inspiring. But his words sure as hell are. So is his record both in and out of government. Any conservative who takes the trouble to read and understand Fred's issue positions and his personal and professional history will find strong evidence of the leadership and intelligence this nation needs in facing all the fundamental, difficult questions of the day. Fred Thompson's late entry and slow start was not a campaign strategy, it was indicative of the difficulty of the task he undertook. Most candidates started YEARS ago building their organizations. Fred Thompson did not. He was drafted by popular demand & had only a few months to get started. It is ironic that the liberal media and his opponents used his delayed entry to brand him as lazy and disinterested when no other candidate would have even considered mounting a campaign within such a short time frame.
Fred's campaign is up and running now. He spent most of this month in Iowa making up to 5 stops a day. It is unfortunate that the MSM's effort to dismiss Senator Thompson as a viable candidate has had an effect. It has certainly affected his finances. But Fred is out there talking to the people. If we can get them to look, they will clearly see that he has the drive, the energy, and the character to win.
Fred needs a strong enough showing in Iowa to generate the funding that will be needed for the upcoming contests. I'm betting he has the right stuff to win if only he can clear this first hurdle.
Here is man that has answered the call out his sense of duty and his love for our country. He is a true conservative not another RINO pretending to be something he is not. Do we want to dismiss him because he was not driven by personal ambition to plan for years how to capture the nomination? Don't we want candidates that say what they believe instead of saying only what we wanted to hear? All conservatives should want to keep Fred Thompson in the race. He sets the bar the others should try to reach. If you want honesty from your candidates, if you want candidates to stand on their principles instead of their marketing campaign, support Fred Thompson and send the message that honesty and character still count.

Thompson has run a part time campaign, and just now with the primaries around the corner, starts taking it seriously. If Thompson got into the game late, that is his problem.
I'm no big Ron Paul fan, but I can see his appeal over media creation candidates like Thompson and others. And Thompson needs to just stop comparing himself to Reagan - let the man rest in peace. It is also dishonest - Thompson should speak about the record of George W. Bush, the man he wants to replace in the White House. But, of course, he will not.

anyways, I think fred thompson is done. he has been quite disappointing. I also think ron paul is done, he is incredibly stupid in his views, not naive but plainly stupid. he proposes to get rid of taxes and most of the federal government but then lacks any reasonable or feasible answer to the question of how on earth he proposes we defend ourselves? he is like a cheap snakeoil salesman who tells people what they want to hear but fails to tell them that his views are completely unreasonable. he is the other side of the dennis kucinich coin and both are laughable and scary.

I just received an email from the Thompson campaign indicating receipt of over $266,000 by the deadline of Friday, 12/28. The amount needed to put the ad on the air all over Iowa between now and the caucuses was $248,000. Just watch--Fred will finish a strong third in the Hawkeye State. He's alive and well.
