The New York Times reports that former Arkansas Governor and Republican Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee came to the defense of the Confederate flag while campaigning in South Carolina:
"You don't like people from outside the state coming in and telling you what to do with your flag," Mr. Huckabee, a former governor of Arkansas, told supporters in Myrtle Beach, according to The Associated Press. "In fact," he said, "if somebody came to Arkansas and told us what to do with our flag, we'd tell them what to do with the pole; that's what we'd do."
He declined to elaborate on exactly what would be done with the pole, but in a general election, the answer for voters may be to not touch Huckabee with the 10 foot variety of it.
An independent group called Americans for the Preservation of American Culture is now running radio ads praising Huckabee's stance and attacking fellow GOP candidates Mitt Romney and John McCain. Veracifier has the ads below.
+

Interestingly, the announcer in the ad says, "In South Carolina, we're proud to be Southerners," yet he sounds like he's from Indiana.
I don't want to get into the whole debate about the flag. Nobody is saying you can't fly the flag on your lawn or at your business. State property, however, belongs to members of the United States of America. When I want to show that I'm proud to be from New Jersey, I fly the Jets flag, but I don't expect anyone to run it up the flagpole in Trenton. If only.
There may be a legitimate gray area (pardon the pun) with regard to the historical significance of the flag and those who died for it, but the folks I see displaying it don't really look all that much like historians. Any reasonable person would see that whatever weight is on that side of the scale is a feather compared to the weight of terror and misery on the other.
Even if you just want to display the flag because you're a bigot, that's fine. This is a free country, and all in all, I think we'd rather know who you are.
I foresee Huckabee defending this as a purely abstract and principled stand, but there are several problems with that. First of all, he brought it up. By doing so, he demonstrates either a wish to contrast his principles with John McCain's on a purely states-rights basis, or a desire to actively court pro-Confederate voters. The fact that he is silent on his personal feelings about the flag versus his opinion of its legal status speaks to the latter choice.
This story should effectively end Huckabee's shot at the GOP nod. Americans may have been ready for a President who hasn't gotten past the Scopes Monkey Trial, but I don't think any of them wants to fight the Civil War again.
Update: Here are 2 videos on McCain and the Confederate flag. One is from Brave New Films, briefly showing some "classic" McCain straight talk. The other is of pro-flag protesters in South Carolina on Tuesday.
nice touch huck what other do you endorse beside the us flag? flags are emotional, and to stir the pot sort of speak, does a disservice to he rest of the country. pandering usally does not work

Tommy- You are too funny.
------------- I really do not get why Huckster would bring this subject up as a major issue. The flag is a state issue and has squat to do with running for president. Forget if you like or dislike the flag. He should have never brought it up and if asked...he should not get into an issue that is a symbol of pride to some and hate to others. NOT SMART! I bet however many votes he gets from pandering to the flag lovers in SC ....he will get three times as many or more that will never vote for him nat. now.

Huckabee's buddies who donated tthe maximum about of money to him and then paid more for the nasty push polling gossip done against Romeny and McCain are slime! Huckabee is in the bottom of the slime bucket. He gives a bad name to the word Baptist and should be ashamed of himself! HE COULD HAVE ASKED HIS FRIENDS NOT TO STOOP TO SUCH DIRTY TACTICS!

RG, if I didn't make it clear enough, it's fork-time for Huck. He's done. And I think he may have finished off the Republicans along with him. Your guy comes out of this smelling like a rose. Right now, I'm almost ready to pick the tickets. I think it's going to be Obama/Edwards vs. Romney/Gingrich.

If you read what Huck said he said it was up to the state to decide about the flag. This shows Huck understands that United States is just that a union of states. The federal govt is supposed to create an enviroment for which the states can direct their own policies. As for the confederate flag it represents two things to me. One it stands for the terrible truth that slavery was allowed in our country. Every state should apologize for allowing it to happen. The Second thing the confederate flag stands for is state right to choose their destiny. The civil war was a misguided effort by the southern states and we our lucky that Abraham Lincoln was president at the time to bring our great nation back together, and Mike Huckabee can be the president we need to set our country on the correct course. Which is fair tax plan, and most important I hope is to deal with the deficit.

Tommy, Gingrich? Oh , I hope not. He might be the one of the quintessential Republicans on policy but Newt has a ball and chain around his leg called personal scandal. It caused him to lag when he ran on his own and you can bet it would make him dead weight now too. It is hurting Rudy now so it most likely would hurt Newt again. Don’t ask who my ideal would be…??
I sure hope you are right about Huck…I just wish he would get ate already. Kind of like the Super bowl party you go to where Chitlings are cooking…oh lord they stink like Huck…You just wish someone would hurry up and eat the nasty things so you don’t have to smell em anymore.

Huckabee did not support this. He was questioned on television last night explaining that the group promoted this view outside of his campaign party. He denied this issue as something the president should even deal with. It is a state issue. The state is given power under the 10th amendment under the constitution to decide with autonomy issues such as flying a flag like the confederate flag. If you really believe everything here on this media source you are in trouble with more than the election.

So we live in a free country? Examine yourself! What Huckabee is saying is that states have rights, and the FEDERAL government does not have the rights to go sticking there nose into every issue, including a flag, re-appropriating gas taxes to other states as they deem necessary, etc. When are we as a people going to recognize that interference is more offensive than a flag?

Pablo67- So if a state wants to have the swastika, mushroom cloud over Japan, a cowboy shooting an Indian, etc… on a flag that would be okay cause it is a state right? If a state wanted to fly a noose that would be okay to since it part of the states history, right? Forget the population of Jews, Japaneese, African Americans, and Indians that would be offended…right? The confederate flag is a symbol from a war fought to continue slavery. The South- thank God lost. The flag lost. The ideal lost. It is a part of history and should be kept as that- just a piece of history…. as swastikas are etc. If someone wants to fly it on private property then that is their right but flying it on a government building as if the flag symbolism still exist or the flags ideal was won should not be tolerated. I am white and I have lived in MS all my life. We voted on the flag and of course he flag still waves on the state buildings.

I think the flag issue is overblown. I'm not in the south, but I think those who are proud of their southern heritage should be able to express it by flying the Confederate flag. I live in Hawaii, and our State flag is also the Nation of Hawaii flag. I take no offense to those here who want to express their pride in the nation of Hawaii with it, and I think I would be offended if other states were to dictate the people of Hawaii's rights to fly their flag.
I admire Mike Huckabee's stance on this issue. It may be a suicidal stance, electability-wise, but at least, to me, he shows he's willing to take a stance that may not be popular with everyone.

The choice in this election is simple. If we want a president who will lead America to the big, bold changes we need and change the conversation in America, Democrats should choose the candidate who has led the field in ideas and shaped the conversation in this race so far.
On the Democratic side, John Edwards, although never the front-runner, has been driving his party's policy agenda. He's done it again on economic stimulus: last month, before the economic consensus turned as negative as it now has, he proposed a stimulus package including aid to unemployed workers, aid to cash-strapped state and local governments, public investment in alternative energy, and other measures
The fact remains that the Edwards campaign has set the domestic policy agenda for the entire field. He was the first with a bold universal health care plan, the first with an ambitious climate change proposal that called for cap-and-trade, and the leader on reforming predatory lending practices and raising the minimum wage to a level where it regains its lost purchasing power
John Edwards has led the other candidates in standing up for progressive change. In this campaign, the other candidates have followed John's lead in talking about the special interests -- but the special interests understand the difference between rhetoric and reality. That's why corporate lobbyists are united against John Edwards.
Here's the bottom line in this election. We need a president who has the vision to put forth bold, progressive solutions to the challenges facing America in the 21st century. John Edwards has shown he has that vision -- and he has led on it throughout this campaign.
John Edwards has stated that, as president, he will require the use of safe, renewable energy sources like wind, solar power and biomass to generate 25% of the nation's electricity by 2025. In the first 100 days of his presidency, John will send legislation to Congress to halt global warming and achieve energy independence.
John has promised to invest $1 billion a year to develop the ability to permanently store carbon emissions and ban the construction of new coal plants that cannot capture their own carbon.
And, as president, John Edwards would invest an additional $1 billion to help U.S. automakers advance the latest technology -- including biofuels, hybrid and electric cars, ultra-light materials and drivetrain improvements -- to ensure the world's most fuel-efficient cars are made in America by union workers.
And because John Edwards has not accepted a dime from Washington lobbyists or special interest PACs, he has a bold, transformational plan to take on the big oil companies, polluters and power companies to address the great environmental challenges of our lifetime.
John Edwards is the only one that will fight poverty and bring health care and education to the poor & middle class of America. John Edwards would be the best President for all of America, anything less will be as bad as keeping Bush in office forever.
America deserves honest men of integrity that will fight for all Americans, and Edwards is a true patriot that can make America great. He has the substinance, determination, and will to fight greed, corruption and end the outsourcing of our jobs.
His economic, education, health and welfare policies are now being copied by all the canidates. Edwards spoke out months and even years before the others.
America needs to think about why the "Washington Greed, Corruption, Large Corporations and Media" are trying to make this a two candidate Democratic race?
Edwards is the only Democrat able to win the Presidency, as polls have showed that any Republican nominated will beat Clinton and/or Obama.
An Edwards presidency will create American jobs for Americans by ending the outsourcing of our jobs lost through NAFTA and CAFTA. It will end the greed and corruption of large corporations and Washington politicians.
End the $700 million per day wasted in Iraq and invest in America, America can prosper in a global economy without outsourcing our jobs
Vote for jobs for the workers of America, healthcare and education for the middle class by endorsing a true patriot of integrity and honesty for America, John Edwards

Huckabee was right. Those who are dividing this country are the anti-flaggers, who are promoting ignorance. That flag represents either the Confederate navy, or Confederate veterans, who withstood four years of overwhelming odds, and choice surrender rather than full-out guerrilla warfare.
The North benefited from slavery. They ran the slave ships, even when it was illegal to do so after 1808. They got their cotton cheaper than otherwise, allowing their factories to succeed.
In short, Southerners may have treated blacks as pets, but Northerners treated them like pet mills.
