Yet a backlash by Clinton supporters appears to have prompted a rethink by Winfrey, the African-American media titan who is routinely described as the most influential woman on television.
From the message board:
OPRAH IS A TRAITOR!!!!!!!!! Nov 27, 2007 12:08 PM I cannot believe that women all over this country are not up in arms over Oprah's backing of Obama. For the first time in history, we actually have a shot at putting a woman in the white house and Oprah backs the black MAN. She's choosing her race over her gender- hypocracy at it's finest!! Oprah- you should be ashamed of yourself!!!!!
With all due respect to my colleagues across The Pond, there appears to be significantly less here than meets the eye. I know it's a wide ocean, but reporting a "scoop" from November? Who's your stringer, Ponce de Leon? Let's dig into this a little after the jump, because there is a discussion to be had here.
Actually, there are several discussions, each filling volumes. First, let's get "The Times" story out of the way. I don't want to beat up on them too much, as they are not alone in trying to stir the pot, albeit remotely. This campaign has already seen sparring over trumped-up race issues and gender politics, so it's only natural to try to combine the two.
Having said that, writing a news story about content from internet forums is like reporting on bathroom graffiti. For example, did you know that dinosaurs control our elections? What I really love, though, is the very first reply to the "Oprah is a Traitor" post:
...Review the candidates history....REALLY search it out--it's easy to find!! In all **fairness** Oprah....you need RON PAUL on your show!!...
The Times goes on to speculate that Oprah is having second thoughts. Their source? Check it out:
Yet Obama's rivals suspect that Winfrey has been startled by the virulent reaction to her previous campaign appearance.
Iron-clad, airtight sourcing. Good show, old bean! So, now that we've established that this story is poorly sourced tripe (not necessarily a bad thing in jolly old England), let's discuss the tangential issues here.
One thing The Times gets right is that there's a decent chance that these comments are the work of provocateurs trying to cow Oprah into silence. However, in today's world of double-reverse, Keyser Soze-style twist ending politics, it could as easily be anti-Clinton people trying to make you think she's behind it, or pro-Clinton people acting on their own, or Hillary herself signing up for 543 Oprah accounts using separate GMail accounts.
Should race and/or gender be a determining factor in someone's vote? You tell me what you think, but I say of course, it can be A determining factor. I also say this is America, Oprah can throw darts at Stedman to decide, if she wants to and he doesn't mind.
Another interesting question is, who needs it more? Who is in worse shape, black people or women? Again, tell me your thoughts.
In the final analysis, it is racist and sexist, not to mention un-American, to suggest that Oprah is a traitor to anyone. In fact, our democracy is better for her participation in it. Maybe if all of those people got off of those message boards and into the game, we'd have had a woman president already.
We need a President, like Hillary Clinton, who can get things done, help put bills and legislation in place that is beneficial to ALL Americans, a President like Hillary Clinton, who UNITES our Nation; For ALL Americans to have opportunities in life with good education, good foundation and good health and UNIVERSAL health care. Hillary can get things done. With Hillary we can make history and get back on track to regain what Bush lost. HILLARY CLINTON FOR PRESIDENT.

Is it really necessary to refer to African Americans as black folks. (The poll, Of these groups which is in need of a more responsive candidate?) Comming from CNN I really expect more. But thats the very reason why we black floks want Obama in office.

Oprah Winfrey was befriended and supported by naive white people who believed that she was above seeing people in terms of race only. These white people wanted her to succeed and did not want her race to stand in her way. Then a population made up mainly of white women saw Oprah the way she portrayed herself as an "every person" with no racial preferences. These white people made Oprah extremely rich. If these same people continue to support Oprah's show, they are morons. She took all of you for a ride. She is one of the biggest racists in the Country. What she is doing showcasing Barack Hussein Obama all over the Country is totally shameful. Yes, she is allowed her choice for President those of you who scream this in your notes. But only now when there is a person of the black race does she find it necessary to show overt support of a political candidate? Because why? Because he has something incredible to offer to the American public? What smithering of substance has this man offered to be so special? Nothing. He has no experience. I now know that Oprah could care less if my white son were in dire need of getting into her African School. She wouldn't invite my white Aunt to her home as one of the super achieving women of the if my Aunt had discoverd the cure for AIDS. Oprah is showing her true colors as a pure racist. She has taken a lot of white people and many, many women for a ride at their expense. Obama deserves to be President of this great Nation about as much as a circus clown or, better yet, a puppet. We know who will be pulling his strings if he made it to the Oval Office. Americans, for the love of your great Country, think for yourselves. Oprah is on another power trip. She is a disgrace.

Republicans will win this election by "Divide and Conquer". Two strong candidates like Hillary and Obama will cancel each other out and the weaker 3rd candidate McCain wins. Nobody gets anything. Strength is in Unity

I think Oprah is a RACIST. Operah got super stardom by the kind support of intelligent white women, yet now, when we have a good chance to put a woman into office to break the glass celing, Oprah turns and pledges her support to an inexperienced black dude for President who wont even salute the American flag !
Operah showed her racist ways before, for example, when she had that super achieving women gathering in her house in Hawaii, she ONLY invited black women. Isnt that racist?
And when she built a school for girls in South Africa, it is only for black girls, yet there are poor white girls in the area who could also benefit. Thats racist too.
Oprah never does anything without a reason. I wonder what her deal is with Obama. Maybe she is hoping for a vice president job? People who are super rich often lose track of reality, and begin to think of themselves as demi-gods.

It was Obama and Edwards who no doubt put their wives Michelle and Elizabeth before the microphone to attack Senator Hillary Clinton. It was in fact Obama who first started the personal attacks against Hillary. Now that former President Clinton stood up in defense of his wife, Obama is not liking the back lash much. The bully is whining.
Obama was beaming when all those bullies in the media were ganging up on their attacks on Hillary. Obama is a coward.

I am sure Oprah Winfrey is losing sleep over what "The Times of London" thinks about her. She is rich enough to buy and sell them, I am sure. England is a great country, but their journalism sucks.

Oprah has had lots of "backing" problems: One of her authors was a fraud. One of her schools had molestation One of her candidates is going to lose.

FT is probably the most important financial publication. It's just unfortunate that even it's readers are as ignorant and close-minded as the general population. Presidential elections, or any elections for that matter, are not about race or gender. They are about electing Government officials who best represent one's own ideas, considering that's specifically their job. It's disgusting to think that just because someone's black or female they will do what's best for blacks or women. Take the war, or taxes. Why wouldn't women or blacks want lower taxes and an end to the war? Neither Obama or Hillary push for these things. But then again, most people just hold their hand out and expect it to be filled, damn the cost to everyone else. Freedom has long since passed like a fad to make room for permanent childhood.

The journalism doesn't matter, whether or not sexism or racism comes into play doesn't matter. The bottom line is the truth. The truth is if Barrack Obama was NOT a black man, Oprah would not be backing him. In the past, Oprah has kept from outright supporting any candidate for fear of uspeting her public stature. All of the sudden, now she's a political figure. Please.

Who's attacking whom???? Get a brain. We all know that the Clintons are for the Clintons, to heck with our country, people they say they care for. Such a joke, the Clintons need to be sent back to Arkansas and start over. We have had enough of Bill Clinton and his disgraceful conduct while in the White House and the only reason she stayed with him is because she can't get a real job. Let's move on to another chaper, omitting the Clintons.

Oprah has shown poor judgment lately in several instance, Obama will prove to be just one more bad judgment.
I don't understand why anybody would listen to her...maybe about a book or a product, but a president? You would have to be out of your mind to vote based on what Oprah says.
She did choose race over gender. She chose an inexperienced iffy black man over a woman who is clearly the better candidate of the two. She chose based solely on race. That is racist. Oprah is a racist.

I bet that was some stupid white chick who called Oprah a traitor, and she probably doesn't even really how crazy her comment comes off. What does she want Oprah to do, cut herself in half? If she supports a woman, she's a traitor and choosing gender over race. Personally, I think some people need to look at the fact that this is Oprah Winfrey--a woman whose show basically caters to white women. She does not care about her race. I think she's just, yet, another ignorant person who wants "something new" over proven political experience. Democrats should get behind one person who actually has a chance of beating Republicans, or I guarantee we'll see a repeat of 2004 with dumb Democrats crying and whining as if it's not partially their own fault.

Personally I wouldn't vote for Obama or Clinton, but the fact that Oprah is backing this man soley based on the fact that they're both black is sickening. Did Oprah think that the public is so stupid that we wouldn't see right through her?? Sincerely, white women w/ black husband & 4 bi-racial children

The beef with Oprah is not based soley on her decision to back a black man and not a women. That's her choice. The beef is that in the past she's never made a stand on a presidential candidate. She's even commented on her show that for her, it was a personal, private decision that she didn't feel comfortable sharing with the public. Now that a black man is running, that belief went out the window? Please.

I admit that I was startled when Oprah first backed Obama. I thought her actions were premature. But after I researched Obama and continued to listen carefully to both the Obama & Clinton camps, I decided to back Obama too. Oprah is entitled to choose the candidate that she feels in harmony with her issues. That's why I choose Obama--he wants to make change on the issues that are meaningful to me. His color does not matter, and his gender does not matter. Bill Clinton has ruined my view of Hillary's effectiveness. He blatantly lies with a straight face. If Hillary get elected, I feel she will have her hands full keeping Bill in line!
