As I reported here last week, Mike Huckabee courted pro-Confederate voters in South Carolina last week by defending the flying of the Confederate flag. On the heels of that stump speech, conservative author Ann Coulter came to Huckabee's defense, in an appearance on Fox News' Hannity and Colmes.
In the clip, she incorrectly states that "...the majority of military bases in this country are named after Confederate officers. Eisenhower, Nimitz..."
Coulter is known for making inflammatory statements, often while publicizing one of her many books. In the past, she has used an anti-gay slur against John Edwards and attacked 9/11 widows by saying that they enjoyed their husbands' deaths.
Coulter joins Chuck Norris and pro wrestler Ric Flair in a somewhat bizarre array of Huckabee supporters. The cumulative effect is damnation by praise that is, if not faint, certainly of dubious quality.
i would like to say as a single mom, of an african american child, in knoxville, tn , where we have had local issues regarding public schools , here, that fly the confederate flag as symbol of their heritage, i have a huge problem with it's symbolism, and how do i explain to my son, that a school system he is apart of, and a potential president of this country support such issues?? unless ann coulter and mike huckabee have an african american child we don't know about, they should stay out of this,, or please feel free to let me know what you would say to 10 year old son, regarding the history and symbolism of the confederate flag, and what is means to his heritage.

anne coulter is another hardcore neo-con. this is a big and awfully pathetic diversion. so what if someone wants to fly a flag his great grandfather died fighting under? i find it ironic that people are so willing to let the media distract them with such a trivial matter. while this debate goes on people forget to check their candidates voting records and their service. huckabee is a tax raiser and increases govt just like '9/11 superstar' giuliani, mitt the mormon, '100 years war' mccain, and ol' man thompson (who just bowed out). while obama flatters the nation people fail to see the apaulling catastrophe that is his non-profit hospital- 103 million dollar profit with patient dumping practices. hillary is well, hillary. edwards would be just another enemy of the middle class. ron paul on the other hand proposes to pull our soldiers out of the 130 countries in which we are stationed, lower taxes, and quite easily lower spending. wake up people, we cant bear another fiscal moron without a serious economic collapse.

I am a W/M of Southern heritage. My family fought for the Confederacy. I have earned the right to fly the Confederate Battle Flag from my home or my business, if I choose to do so. The Confederate flag has a place in American history; like it or not. Any display of the flag within a legitimate historical context is permissable. However, the daily exhibition of this flag on public buildings is in poor taste and diverts our energy from important matters of state. Let's put the civil war behind us and move on!

It was fun to watch Dick Morris try to pretend morale outrage. Every time I see him I try to imagine the prostitute leading him around with a doggy collar....Who knew he was jewish? His face got so red and flustered, he literally spit out his words. Comic! He said that the confederate flag was to his poelpe what the naxi emblem was to bas to blacks but I think he got it turned around. I remember in Mississippi that the American Jewish Federation or some other special interest group weighed in on our flag vote (essentially saying that our St. Andrews Cross on our State Fag was racist) What a joke! The Star of David is about as ethnocentric a symbol as one could find and is plastered smack in the middle of the Zionist State's flag, the nation where christians and muslims are not allowed to vote.

Bill & Stephanie - The wording in the First Amendment is the basis of repeated Supreme Court rulings that separate government from religion. The intent of the founders was to protect religious organizations from the government more than the other way around. We will never remain a Christian nation should that ever come about. About five minutes after it happens, the Catholics and the Protestants will disagree on the flavor of Christianity. The Protestants will win due to numbers and political activism. Five minutes after that the Baptists will split from the Methodists. And so on.
Check your facts. The founding fathers were not any more religious and perhaps less religious than was the norm of the time. The Treaty of Tripoli states that the US is a secular country.
Greg - spare us the ad hominem attacks. They are beneath you and any other thinking person. Also the State of Israel is not secular and is not bound by the Constitution of the United State, thus a religious symbol on a flag is not an issue. Where do you get this xxxx about Christians and Muslims not being allowed to vote?
garddog59 - No one has a problem with a Christian being President. So far, all of them have. What we have a problem with is a Presidential candidate who believes the United States should become a theocracy. We also hate candidates who pander by giving up their values to get votes.

Thank you vhamlin. The issue here is that the stars and bars is flying from in front of a public building. Come on, if you can't see that is inappropriate, then I guess you are well...a Huckabee supporter? It's just common sense. Fly it from your house, mount in on your car, fly it from your business, but it clearly does not belong in front of a public building.
You know there are many, many issues that truly are debatable. This is just not one of them.

also, ann needs to STOP GENERALIZING " the south" or "the southerners" who view the confederate flag as piece of their history. NOT ALL SOUTHERNERS WANT THE CONFEDERATE FLAG. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!!!!!!! and i am a white mother of an african american child. AND IT'S NOT HONORABLE. you are certainly entitled to your opinion, just as you are , your _ _ _ hole. and if i were a republican, i would want you to shut your mouth. you are not helping your party!

Steven, the descrimination against gays and women as well as people of other religions and the anti-abortion and anti-scientific discovery (stem cell research, therapeutic cloning) as well as the blatant ignoring of scientific evidence, e.g. young earth creationists seem to be extremely close minded to me
afimedia I believe making a law based on religious doctrine conflicts with the establishment and free exercise clauses of the constitution, and illegal aliens are people, too, many of whom would be facing extreme poverty in their home country and had no opportunity to enter the country legally (oh and James, Eisenhower was from Kansas which isn't part of the south)

Who the hell cares who Ann Coulter supports, its all the more reason not to vote for them, if anyone is vile and hateful enough to get her endorsement, they would do better to refuse it. not that it would help. Coulter is one of the few people in this world that truly deserves pain in her life.

There have been some absolutely terrible candidates for President in the past, and at least one of the worst was even elected, but, Mike Huckabee has got to be one of the most openly, transparently, dangerous men EVER TO HAVE RUN FOR PRESIDENT. How could any thinking person actually believe we need to have our country run by a religious fanatic, when our Constitution expressly calls for a separation of church and state. It is always bad enough when the right wingers choose people who they KNOW WILL VOTE FOR THEIR RELIGIOUS POINT OF VIEW ON ANY CONTENTIOUS SUBJECT. Now they want to elect a man who outright plans to change our entire Constitution single handedly. Bush isn't even bothering to ''change'' it, he just does what he wants "in spite of what the Constitution says". What is happening to this nation and our strong foundation?

If Ann Coulter comes to your defense, I'm wondering how long you'll be hanging around? Ann is like the "Angel of Death in Politics." She used the F-bomb on John Edwards and he hasn't been able to make traction since. The man's only flaw thus far has been "Perfect Hair." Romney and Chucklebee have good looking hair too. Romney flip flops more than Kerry while Hucklebee steps in more crap than a farmer. The last thing he needs is Ann Coulter's stink on his shoes. Whoooo! That's a Rick Flair reference. Black people like "Rasling", but this campaign could start to look real racist? Scrape Ann off your shoes before the house starts to stank?

Let me see: if Gen. Eisenhower and Admiral Nimitz were Confederate officers, I guess that would mean that the Civil War was fought between 1941-1945 and I don't know where Abe Lincoln was at the time since FDR was occupying the White House.
If Ann Coulter had a brain, she would not be the Republican pin-up that she is.

Anne states, "How could any thinking person actually believe we need to have our country run by a religious fanatic, when our Constitution expressly calls for a separation of church and state." Talk about closed-minded. Since when is it against the Constitution to be religious? Obviously you've never read the founding fathers' writings or you'd realize how much egg you have on your face. But closed-minded people like you won't listen to reason, so I'm probably wasting my words here. You give not one example of where Huckabee wants to mix church and state or change the Constitution. You just make ridiculous claims. Fred Thompson is the best man for the job, but probably doesn't have a chance. Huckabee may actually have a chance to get the nomination, although I doubt it, but at least he's a better choice than many out there. But Anne, your closed-minded rhetoric makes you sound just like the Anne (Coulter) that you bash. America is great because of open-minded people, not because of people with the prejudices you have.

Anne-when our Constitution expressly calls for a separation of church and state.
"expressly", You than obviously have not ever read the constitution. It does not "expressly" or specifically call for a separation of church & state. They didn’t want a national religion like other counties had at the time, that’s all.

Ann Coulter quite obviously meant that they were southerners. Is there anyone here who has not made a similar mistake? The truly racist remarks reported over Fox News here on this issue, reminiscent of Julian Bond, the racist NAACP Chairman, was that of Fox News regular Dick Morris, who proclaimed himself as a Jew, and then went on to declare that every southerner who fought under the Confederate Flag was a racist! Why does it not surprise anyone that the Julian Bonds and Dick Morrises of the world, especially in America, are the one thing that keeps hate and discontent stirred up with their racist remarks? I find it hard to believe that these people are ignorant, so they must be pushing a certifiable racist agenda. What else could possible explain such absolute stupidity?
