Edwards Camp: Hill Can Run, Can't Hide

    Posted:

On the heels of Barack Obama's landslide victory in the South Carolina Democratic Primary, The Political Machine contacted the Edwards campaign for comment. Chief campaign adviser Joe Trippi let it be known that his candidate will not be going gently into Super Tuesday's good night, talked about Hillary's flight from South Carolina, and those Clinton "Robocalls" that showed up last night. Let's see how the "grown-ups" do it.

I reached Trippi on my crummy cell phone, and there was a whole lot of noise on his end, and I lost the signal halfway through and had to call him back, and my stupid pen ran out of ink, but here's what I got.

The Political Machine: What did you think of Hillary leaving South Carolina as the polls were closing?

Joe Trippi: Hey, she can run, but she can't hide. (laughs)

TPM: What's the mood like in your camp?

JT: We're feeling good. A lot of people said we were in freefall, but then, with all the polarization, and (John's) performance in the debate, we were coming on strong, but then there were those millions of robocalls that went out last night. I guess they were really worried about us.

We've been raising a lot of money online, more this week than in any previous quarter of the campaign. This was a big win for Obama, no question, but for what they (the Clintons) put into this, I mean, they campaigned hard, they had the President running around, and we ended up with, what, 8 delegates to (Hillary's) 12? They sure didn't get out what they put in.

TPM: What were the robocalls about?

JT: (I'm paraphrasing a lot here) Google it, Jackass! (paraphrasing over.) They were trashing John on trade and on some six-degrees-of-separation foreclosures in South Carolina, but there's nothing real there. Citicorp is one of her biggest donors, so people can check to see who's on their side.

TPM: Do you have any insight into that 20 minute or so meeting between John and Hillary after the last debate?

JT: Y'know, this happens a lot, the candidates get together and talk, and suddenly it's a big thing. During the debate, you know, John was just talking to Barack, saying, "Hey, you should do this, or you should do that..." and then, the second half of the debate, Barack's using it, and I'm like, "Why do you do that?"

It's because, that's just how he (Edwards) is. He just talks to them like he would to anyone. So, with Hillary, it was just chit-chat, nothing big.

TPM: Just between you and me, (lol) Obama comes to you, says, "Hey, John, you trash Hillary for a week, then drop out before Super Tuesday, and I'll sew up that VP spot for you." Are you in on that?

JT: (laughs) No, we're in it for the long haul, we're going to keep picking up delegates and keep it alive, John's chance of securing the nomination.

TPM: So there is no way you're out before Super Tuesday?

JT: No, not that I know of, there's no way I see that happening.

Just to clarify, Joe Trippi is as close to the horse's mouth as it gets, and I've quizzed him on several occasions about Edwards staying in the race. He's a very unguarded guy, not canned or scripted like a lot of campaign officials are, so I get the strong sense that this is the real deal, that Edwards is in it for the long haul.

It will be interesting to see how this campaign looks going forward. Is Obama going to have to come after Edwards, or will he continue to go head-to-head with Hillary? If Hillary's lead in the national and Super Tuesday polls erodes following this defeat, what will her campaign pull out next? And can Edwards, who largely met expectations in South Carolina, crack the top two in this race? Stay tuned.
