MoveOn.Org and SEIU Endorse Barack Obama

MoveOn.org, the progressive grassroots political action group that touts 3.2 million members, has formally endorsed Senator Barack Obama for the Democratic Nomination for President. The organization had emailed it's members this week requesting that they vote their choice in a secure, online poll. From the press release:
In a resounding vote today, MoveOn.org Political Action's members nationwide voted to endorse Senator Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination for President. The group, with 3.2 million members nationwide and over 1.7 million members in Super Tuesday states, will immediately begin to mobilize on behalf of Senator Obama. The vote favored Senator Obama to Senator Clinton by 70.4% to 29.6%.
Senator Obama accepted the endorsement stating:
"In just a few years, the members of MoveOn have once again demonstrated that real change comes not from the top-down, but from the bottom-up. From their principled opposition to the Iraq war - a war I also opposed from the start - to their strong support for a number of progressive causes, MoveOn shows what Americans can achieve when we come together in a grassroots movement for change. I thank them for their support and look forward to working with their members in the weeks and months ahead."

And in very breaking news, the SEIU (who had endorsed Edwards) has announced it's support of Barack Obama as well. From MSNBC:
The 600,000-member union had been behind Edwards and has now moved to Obama -- the second reported union to do so. NBC News reported yesterday afternoon that the 200,000-member Transportation Workers Union was set to switch from Edwards to Obama today as well, now that the former North Carolina Senator has suspended his campaign.
I'll update with more information as it becomes available.
At first glance it appears that the MoveOn endorsement will do well for grabbing portions of the Edwards supporters. However, we can absolutely expect to see the Republicans making great hay out this particular nod - especially with the MoveOn Petreus/Betray Us ad in the New York Times still fresh in everyone's minds.
The SEIU (Service Employee's Internation Union should give Obama a boost both among former Edward's supporters as well a some traction in California on Super Tuesday, February 5.
Update: Additional congressional endorsements for Obama since Wednesday here. ColorofChange also endorses Obama today:
More than 16,000 of you participated in our online poll, and a clear winner emerged: Barack Obama, with more than 69% of the total votes. John Edwards edged out Hillary Clinton by a narrow margin, and after Edwards left the race, a majority of his supporters indicated in a follow up poll that they would move to support Obama.

Not all members of SEIU support Obama, there are those of us who strongly support Huckabee and will continue to do so. I almost always vote Democrat and would/will vote for Hillary if Huckabee does not get the Republiacan nomination.
I will never vote for a candidate for US President who does not have Jesus Christ as their savior. I am not a religious nut, in fact I am a former Atlanta Police Officer and now work for SEIU/NAGE. I strongly believe that if we elect Romney or Obama we are traveling down a path that is displeasing to God and Lord knows we need his help as workers and families.
I strongly support SEIU and will continue to do so even though we disagree on this issue.

Obama is not a Christian and if you go to the web site of the "Church" where he claims membership it would appear he has joined a black only Church and that is not what My God had in mind. If you are Christian you know that the Anti-Christ comes as the great deceiver.

I shold also say that I am not making an argument that Obama is the Anti Christ just as I am not making that accusation against Mitt, I just worry that we should as a nation seeking God's favor vote for a candidate who risks all by proclaiming his beliefs in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and I believe that is Gov. Huckabee.

Well everyone has a right to endorse whome he wants. But remember one thing Hillary will be our President at this time , She has lots of support that does not come out to public and we women are rally together to make it happen.
Ted Kenedy could be a big influence in this endorsement, I surprise he ought to run this race himself but then again he knew he would not have a chance and he hate to be under female high ranking than him .. therefore he is tries the hardest to support the opposit from Hillary even mean a black man , Is Obama born in Unite State? I was not sure of that. We in southern calif are for women president and Hillary is the one.

Charles. Mr. Obama is a Christian. He is a member of the T.U.C.C. in Chicago. I've been there. Now, as far as the race in churches, you can go to any city in the country of any denomination and you will find churches with an all white membership (Southern Baptist, Nazarene, etc) and churches with all Black membership (Church of God in Christ, Full Gospel, Baptist, etc) Just because a church is prodomately one race doesn't mean a person of another race can't join it or it isn't a christian church. The church as a whole has discriminated in some way. I don't know who you claim as your God, but being a Christian, a son a Pastor of a christian church and ministering to people myself and visit churches that was either prodomately White or Black I can say that Senator Obama, Clinton, Edwards, Thompson, Paul, Dodd are christians. Sounds like you're discriminating yourself. Didn't Jesus command us to love?

I voted as a moveon.org member and Obama will win alot of States from the grasroots.
Hillary might have the Farm Workers endorsement but Obama has the Peace movements endorsement.
Hillary is not the Peace candidate never has been.
The times they are a changing and Obama is the change we need in America.

pandamomaw, we can't assume that Charles is a bigot. Ignorant and discriminating against someone because of religion. If my memory serves me correctly, I believe the same thing Charles is doing with his comments is the same type of discrimination that Jesus Christ faced.
I agree with you pandamomaw and you may be right. But he's not going to admit it even if he was. I'm not a Republican, but I don't dislike the GOP candidates because of their religous affliations.

I have known Senator Obama before he even ran for the United States Senate and I have personally witnessed his Christian acts and prayers as well as witnessed him take oath of office the same as all other Illinois Senators.
And please let me note that I am a Republican "born again" minister and veteran. It truly bothers me that my fellow Christians would stoop to spreading such lies.
If we do not choose to vote for Obama because of his views on moral issues, that is one thing. But to proclaim, against his own argument and actions, that he is not a Christian is judging which Christ tells us not to do unless we too be judged. He has stated numerous times he is. The church is not a black only church. However, a part of its mission is to deal with the ills and problems addressing the black community here and in Africa. Besides, because he belongs to the church does not mean that he does or has to fully believe or accept 100% of what they teach or practice. How many Catholics believe and practice things that go against their doctrine?
Please also let me remind you that Bush says he is a Christian and Clinton said he was as well and we see what damage they have both done to "Christianity" in the Presidency.

Charles Warren, I can only infere that you are a religious nut. Huckabee is certainly a religious nut who wants to "change the constitution so that it reflects the God's message" his words in South Carolina, not mine. The founding fathers were religious but feared people like him and have protected the constitution against people like him.
By including Mitt you are also saying you do not like the mormon. You are indeed a bigot, a religious nut.

I would never vote for a anty Isreal person, like Obama orClinton. What kind of person would go to A church that teaches hate for whites and America. I,m a born again christian and 65 years old. In are church we have blacks , whites, indians . My daughter is cape verden. Ilove all people, so does God.Obama& Clinton are for everything God is against.To me, thay are the sons&daughters of Satain.

Obama attends the Trinity United Church of CHRIST! Yes, the congregation celebrates African heritage. Why do you find it offensive? Greek Orthodox churches celebrate Greek heritage. Mormons celebrate their pioneer heritage. Catholics feel a connection with Rome. I shutter to think of how you would feel about a Church of England member. But then again, I am sure that you feel all these people are unworthy because they are not "correct Christians". Shame on you.
I echo the words of Obama "people are tired of seeing faith used as a tool of attack. They don't want faith used to belittle or to divide. They're tired of hearing folks deliver more screed than sermon."

I was a Move on.Org member, so their endorsement means nothing to me as I am still voting for Hillary. Just because a Union or organization endorses a Candidate does not mean the people in that Union etc. will vote for the Candidate they endorse. Not everyone believes Carolyn and Ted Kennedy's endorsement is such a great thing, after all JFK was only President two years and that really wasn't much time to build a Legacy. What I remember about JFK was how classy Jackie was as First Lady, the Bay of Pigs and JFK having an affair with Marilyn Monroe and others. Carolyn was too young to remember anything, and Ted is too controversial a figure to take him to seriously.
