Broadcasting and Cable Magazine reports that David Shuster will return to MSNBC on February 22, shortly before the Democratic debate in Ohio. Shuster was suspended following a remark that he made, about Chelsea Clinton, as guest host on the Feb. 7 edition of "Tucker."
The remark touched off a firestorm that included surprising, and disappointing, reactions from MSNBC, Countdown host Keith Olbermann, and Senator Hillary Clinton. MSNBC suspended Shuster, Olbermann gravely announcing the disciplinary action and calling the remark "indefensible", and Senator Clinton threatening to pull out of a debate on MSNBC and demanding harsher action against Shuster, presumably his firing. Since then, Clinton has agreed to appear on MSNBC's debate.
While each of them had a point, their respective reactions were cowardly and hypocritical. MSNBC had already proven itself craven in the face of the Don Imus apocalypse, but I expected much more from Olbermann and Senator Clinton. Here, again, are Shuster's remark and subsequent apology, followed by my analysis. It is important to bear in mind that I am an admirer of both Keith Olbermann and Hillary Clinton. It is precisely that admiration that is the cause of my profound disappointment. I have also come to admire and respect Shuster's work, mainly due to his coverage of the Scooter Libby trial and this bright, shining moment:
When this flap first occurred, I lit into Keith Olbermann pretty good, but hadn't yet heard Senator Clinton's reaction. Olbermann was right to say that Shuster's remark was inappropriate. It was in describing the remark as "indefensible" that he went wrong, taking his condemnation of Shuster way over the top. I framed my criticism as a "Unique Utterance", a nod to Olbermann's own "Special Comment" segments. Here are some of the key points:
Shuster's remark was innappropriate, for sure, but far from indefensible or worthy of suspension. In context, the remark was meant to convey a cynical use of a personal relationship for political purposes. He was clearly not calling Chelsea a prostitute, or implying that she is equipped with spinning chrome rims and a plasma TV in her headrest. For a guy who prizes nuance, you seem to have taken a narrow view of Shuster's unfortunate word choice.
Should he have been suspended? I don't think so. A profuse and unqualified apology would, I think, have sufficed. Chelsea Clinton seems like a good sport, if this clip is any indication. Of course, that would have allowed critics of MSNBC, such as your nemesis, Bill O'Reilly, to make hay out of your firing of Don Imus, as if they were the same thing. So, you sacrificed your friend in exchange for retention of your high horse.
And what of the Imus firing? Again, his remark was far more offensive in its content and its intent, but as mild as baby shampoo compared to the bile that is SOP from other hosts and pundits. Then, there's your colleague, Chris Matthews, who was cited in detail by Media Matters for a steady stream of misogynist, anti-Hillary commentary for which he, to his slight credit, issued an apology before continuing it unabated. You tolerate misogynistic substance from Matthews, yet condemn Shuster for the distorted appearance of misogyny where there is none.
Then came Hillary Clinton's reaction.
I do think that Hillary has a point in threatening to refuse a debate on MSNBC based on the totality of their coverage, particularly Chris Matthews, but then to accept a debate on Fox News? That dog, as they say, don't hunt. In her letter to MSNBC, it is clear that she is demanding that they change their ways in the macro, but there also seems to be a call for Shuster to be fired. MSNBC needs to stand up for their reporter.
The Clinton campaign kept up the pressure on MSNBC, but pressed the issue with Shuster rather than focusing on the far more pervasive and substantive problems with MSNBC's other hosts. As one of my readers astutely, and perhaps cynically, pointed out, Senator Clinton's "outrage" made headlines that supplanted coverage of her sweeping defeat by Barack Obama in the "Significant Saturday" primaries.
Now that she is trying, legitimately, to pressure her opponent into more debates, her outrage seems to have dimmed. If Senator Clinton had truly mistaken the character of Shuster's remark, it would seem impossible that she would later agree to appear on MSNBC.
Knowing what I do about Hillary Clinton, I suspect that a lot of this is due to bad advice from her senior staff. The campaign seems to be adept at parrying irrational or frivolous attacks, but less inclined to welcome challenges on the substance. That is a shame, because Hillary is very strong there. Instead of demanding Shuster's firing, they could have accepted his apology, addressed the legitimate, if poorly phrased, point he was raising, and used the contrast to highlight the more serious wrongs of Chris Matthews, et al.
What we have, instead, is another attempt by a candidate to chill the press and make it easier for them to manipulate the message, and MSNBC went right along with it. It would have been difficult for them to have stood by Shuster without punishing Matthews, whereas offering up Shuster seems to have spared them the need to make any other change at all.
America has had seven long years of White House press relations that have consisted of "straw man" arguments and manipulations by a string of press secretaries. I'm sure that the public is ready for that to change, but this kerfuffle does not bode well.
Reporters should not have to worry about losing access to political figures because they ask challenging questions, or worry about being hung out to dry by their employers if they make a poor word choice. Journalism used to be a heroic profession, but now, it seems to be run by cowards and pushed around by bullies. For shame.
Update: This AP video report mentions the Shuster episode, but also provides support for the argument he was trying to make, and takes its own shots at Chelsea. I guess as long as you don't use the wrong colorful idiom, it's "game-on."
THAT GUY NEEDS TO BE FIRED!!! WHAT ABOUT OBAMAS WIFE?

PLEASE-PLEASE...I employ you to read this letter and keep a copy of it and think very carefully what I'm saying. This is the last hope that the people of our fine Country will see the light. Here goes:
In 2004 in the greatest Country in the world(at that time) a man named George Bush ran for President and promised the people "CHANGE"...he lied to them but the people believed him. It's true he did bring change...the country went into a War with no meaning(attacking the wrong enemy for self interest), the majority of the countries in the world who once admired us..now hate us, our economy is in a recession, our country is in debt, the corruption in his administration is beyond your mind, he is in contempt of Congress and tells those in his Administration not to testify when authorities investigate the corruption...this list goes on for badges. Lets end this part... The peopele of the Country are disgusted and will do anything for change...they are dying for change. The stage is now set...an election is coming up and the stage has been already set and one of the candidates(Barack Obama) has done his homework very, very well and is truly a dynamic speaker, has Charisma and is Black. He must cover all bases to assure victory so he sets the plan in motion. Super Tuesday comes and the other Candidate shows him up...now the wheels have to turn in his favor and fast. South Carolina comes up...here is his chance....mostly blacks in this state and he well knows how to capture their vote...for the first time he mentions Martin Luther King(you know what that stirs up...they remember slavery(long gone by etc)..but the hurt is deep..he likens himself to MLK for reasons that are not plausible...to get tthe black vote to overpower the white and it works(80-90% vote for him). He is a good speaker and he can convince people of anyhing....he has no substance to his political platform other than...1) CHANGE and 2) We can do it????. Oh wait...he needs the media now more than ever and deals are made which someday will become public...Super Tuesday is forgotten and FOX, CNN etc. push the South Carolina victory down everyone's throat and start making predictions which people start to buy into...he goes on to more :BLACK" states and wins them the same way...now the other Candidate's supporters who fail to look at the results very, very carefully start to think this man will actually change their life. They forget, thru his own admission, he will help primarily Africa and the Muslim world...but they don't see this because Bush has made them desperate and mad and you never make a decision when you're angry but they will do it and they have. Now he needs more support so he tells the people anything they want to hear. He also gets the present President's Father to endorse him...imagine that...republican for democrat.. smell a rat. Oh, let's not forget as part of a deal which will be seen someday...Bush and his wife go to,,,,you guessed it AFRICA to promise health to the people even though we don't have a dime. Then folks, the most disastrous thing that could have happened is happening...the people who supported the woman who would actually help the people started to believe this man and thought gee...if you don't know where the parade is..just follow the crowd...But don't blame them because when asked why they push towards him..their only response is "CHANGE"...oh there will be change alright. However, they will NOT benefit at all. OK let's try this...in Indiana a person is about to replace someone else and be a member of Congres.****Just one more thing...this man from Illinois knew he could capture the youth...why...well he was young, had used drugs(which they said...and I quote.."that was cool"),he knew the rhetoric was something they hadn't been a victim of before and believed him...see none of these people(kids) were ever victims of this before....now the wheels are turning and the media makes sure the wheels are well oiled. May God help America folks....Before it's too late...vote for Clinton...May God protect America...we're going to need it. I love you all but don't follow others ..make your own decision...By the way, notice some of the blacks(superdelagtes) in Congress have turned to Obama and openly said because he is black and will be our first black Pres....my good friends..if that's not prejudism I don't know what is.

Obama's surge is the fact that the press shows complete favoritism and is sickening. No voter wants a candidate shoved down their throat! Cable news pundits are irresponsible predicting Obamas win and MUST stop trying to control what our society thinks and how we vote and stick to reporting facts. It's sickening to hear all the endless chatter about speeches, momentum or charisma. WE NEED FACTS, SOLUTIONS AND ANSWERES all there geniuses in mainstream media, cable news, need to summon the courage to tell their audiences about important issues and facts before permitting a public coronation of Obama based on RACE, speeches, momentum or charisma, we need solutions, which seem to be absent from obama. God save us all, Our great but troubled United States needs strong, experienced and principled leadership to restore faith in our government and repair its credibility at home and abroad, and to end the destructive policies that have eroded rights for all americans, women's rights, minorities and civil liberties and increased injustice and inequality in our society. Clinton is just such a leader. She has a long history of support for women's empowerment, and her outstanding long public service record is a testimony to her leadership on issues important to women afroamericans, minorities and children around the globe. She has eloquently articulated the need for full economic, political and social equality for everyone in every institution of society, taking action throughout her career - as a lawyer, community leader, 2-term First Lady, Senator and candidate for the presidency - to advance the civil and human rights.HELP Hillary Clinton Make History

Another case of Clinton bashing, last night after work I watched the news shows CNBC, CNN,Fox News.I watched person after person bash Hillary with no one to defend her for the millions of people who support her.The hatred that many feel for her and her husband on these shows is sad to see.Chris Mathews,Sean Hannity Wolf Blitzer,Jack(ass)Haverty are true hate mongers.Night after night hatefull comments fill these shows and no one stops them. Why are we surprised that David Schuster said what he did.If I say bad things over and over in front of my children and they repeat it why am I surprised and want to punish them. The networks are at fauly,Imagine if that comment was made about Michele Obama I'm sick of hearing this is not about race when it is about nothing else I'm sorry that black people were brought to this country as slaves but I was not part of this and neither was Hillary Clinton. Her and her Husband have done much for the African Americans in this country and they are being tossed aside by these same people to support someone just because of their skin color.

The news media has lost the art of objectivity...I don't mind commentary but don't disguse it as news. And for goodness sake represent both sides fairly. (no puppets like Alan Combs)
HOWEVER, Mrs. Clinton may be reaping what she once sowed so carelessly. Name calling, condemnation, and suppression are not unfamiliar territory to her. Yes, everyone wants to see her fail, but it isn't becuase she is a woman. It is becuase she has represented herself as superior to the human race. Her lecturing, miss-know-it-all, ungracious, I-deserve-this, poor-me tone is just not what I want in the White House. Give me Obama's platitudes or McCain's false humility.

Didn't see the broadcast because MSNBC makes me want to vomit. However having witnessed MSNBC's reaction to Don Imus's admitted inappropriate comments, they suspend then terminate his program. For God's sake people, seeing Keith Oberwhateverinthehellhisnameis throw wadded up paper at the camera and Chris Matthews's "HAH", the FCC should yank the plug on this unbearably stupid network.
