My very brief analysis of tonight's Democratic debate in Texas: Hillary Clinton missed several golden opportunities, and Barack Obama held his own. With her lead in Texas narrowing, and her struggle to win delegates increasingly steep, Hillary Clinton needed a knockout, or needed Obama to fall on his face. That didn't happen, so this is a win for Obama.
However, Hillary so badly outclassed Barack on that final question that it makes the earlier missed opportunities that much more glaring. Worst of all was her invocation of the bogus plagiarism charge. After Senator Obama had thoroughly dismantled the argument, she tried to launch a sound bite, saying, "That's not change you can believe in, that's change you can Xerox."
Not only did the crowd boo her, but she wasted a chance to blunt the damage done by a week of negative campaigning by surrogates. She should have repudiated the plagiarism claim, and reinforced her "solutions, not speeches" argument. It would have been a classy move that would have allowed her to capitalize on her later gains.
Her performance on that last question, however, was so superb, and so powerful as the last word in the debate, that she could have gained real ground if not for the missteps. This is what I was talking about when I said, "Let Hillary be Hillary"
Update: Here's the video of that last question. After the jump, a little more analysis the morning after.
Get the new PD toolbar! Neither candidate really answered the question asked, which was to name a crisis that had tested them. Obama gave a meandering autobiography, and said the whole thing was his test. Hillary made a relaxed crack about weathering crises in the first Clinton era, then spoke very movingly about wounded veterans, and finished by saying that whatever she goes through is nothing compared to the troubles of ordinary Americans. A triumph.
The moments that fell flattest were those that were obviously based on campaign talking points, like bringing up Chris Matthews' ambush of Kirk Watson. It is a shame for Hillary, because Obama scored lots of points against McCain, another area Hillary could have done better on.
Here was Hillary's weakest moment, her "Xerox" comment.
On the question of earmarks, Hillary took a novel approach, but Obama wins the point anyway.
She elects to answer a different question, a popular technique, but a missed opportunity given the strength of Obama's answer. Again, this answer seems to have been crafted by strategists rather than emanating from an authentic place. She needed to address the earmarks specifically, and didn't.
Hillary came off really well in areas where she essentially agreed with Obama, as with the economy. Her answer is relaxed and assured, and she really shines on this one.
In an area where I believe Obama is weaker, he carries the point by effectively countering Hillary's anecdotal flourishes. By the way, where is her Secret Service detail? It sounds like people are constantly grabbing her arm, or clutching her hand, on the campaign trail.
Hillary missed a huge opportunity, almost as huge as the "Xerox" misstep, with this question.
Her silence on the question of Obama's readiness was deafening. She should have started by saying, "Of course I think he's ready, but I'm readier, more qualified." She could have even made a joke about Obama being ready to be "a heartbeat away." Although she didn't say he wasn't ready, which would have been a major blunder, she could have scored major class points here.
It seems clear to me that the thing that tripped her up here was the din of strategists and talking points in her ear. It's a shame, because if she picks up even one of those missed points, I think it tips this debate in her favor.
I hope that, if Hillary doesn't come back to win the nomination, that she ends up on the ticket with Obama. I also hope that the next time she runs for office, she gets rid of her current strategists and hires me. It will be the easiest paycheck I ever earn. "Let Hillary be Hillary."
I TELL YOU IS TOO LATE FOR HIL..SHE MISSED A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO KO OBAMA WHEN SHE WENT NEGATIVE.I GUESS IS HARD TO HAVE A CHANGE OF HART WHEN YOU HAD SOWN LIES AND DECEIVENESS FOR SO LONG ONE DAY IT COMEBACK AND BITE YOU

Hillary Clinton was booed because people don't like her negative attacks. It reminds people of the Clinton years of divisive wars, politics of personal destruction, and endless scandals. The Clintons have had their turn in the White House. It's time for someone new like Barack Obama who offers hope and promise.

You are, as you nearly always are, dead on. Hilary looked weak early on, and the comments on plagairism were her weakest moment. But I agree she outclassed him on the last question - his anwer was such a disappointment, I got up and got a glass of wine. I think he had a cold and was getting increasingly tired. It was like she was aware this was her last chance, and he was not. But overall, he did a great job and he really looked like a commander in chief. And her great moment in the '9th inning' - I think it was her chance to tell the voters that she will loose with dignity (dito on her answer to the super delegate question) and that she will "be fine." Nothing that happened tonight will change the race - Obama is the front runner, and Hillary's strategy is all over the place - is she the classy survivor of the last question or the petty shrew of the "xerox" comment? Maybe there is someone in her campaign that is guiding each "Hilary." But she would have been more effective if she had had the courage to be herself. Obama has not such problem - he is always the same and I think he will be the nominee.

You're right! Let Hilary be Hilary! Barack Obama won the debate because he is working to bring together a nation which has been weakened by the Bush administration over the last seven years! Hilary fails to see the big picture! We are tired of the rhetoric - IT'S TIME FOR A CHANGE!

Hillary would do the Democratic party a big favor if she took her que and quit the presidential race. It is becoming pretty obvious she doesn't have anything new to offer that will benefit the American people, because the only thing she seems to be concentrating her efforts on now is attacking Obama. Throwing dirt won't get her anywhere, and it appears the audience at the debate expressed that about her with loud boos. Hillary, just pack up and leave, and take the rest of your bimbo pack with you.

I am a Democrat who supports Hillary. She has worked her whole life to try to make this country a better place for all. I feel Obama does not have as much experience and he speaks in sound bites and not on issues. I also feel he doesn't have the best issues of all. He said he would make health care for adults optional, lower income families will buy extras for their children before paying for health care for themselves. His wife might have not meant what she said about being a proud American but, a first lady should be able to speak well. I don't think she has the experienc either to manage diplomatic duties.

Hillary did pretty well tonte, but I can see her internal head fight in what her campaign tells her to say and her instinct. She should follow her own thoughts and instincts. I think she has had the best moments when she is herself. That is all I have been waiting for from her. All of the bs attacks from her and Obama's campaigns don't really progress the actual debate. Who can actually better ARTICULATE what each can do for the country? What is better inspiration or political backroom dealing?

To B628537:
Why should Hillary quit until the end? With that way of thinking, the Patriots won the SuperBowl. I am an Obama supporter but I want these two to debate to the end. The purpose of this contest is to determine who is best to lead the country. Let everyone have their say. We're not Republicans!

Hiliary has substance. Barack lacks substance. He generalizes what he will do, and reminds us all of what is broken. But how will he fix it? Personality? Charm? Oprah? Hiliary is by far the better candidate. four years of on the job training is too long and we would be stuck. Voters need to look at their records for answers. But Im sure they will not. He didnt vote on the war in Iraq. He won his own coin toss.. Please, it is time to get "real"

I feel people are following Obama because he is what is in style right now. I worry they are the same people who voted George Bush in for two terms. Hillary is the candidate for change. She has the experience and the heart for the job. Vote Hillary

I have no idea whom I'd like to vote for as neither one has said anything I have felt was absolutely necessary for the people of the USA. Mexico doesn't need a fence as the people there are very nice & the Pres. of Mexico needs to have the people work on good jobs so that we could have good trade w/them & be friends as we have a lot of Spanish people in our country who would like to buy their products. They didn't speak re the wounded soldiers that are mentally ill & have committed suicide & didn't get the best of care in Walter Reed Hospital or from Veteran Clinics so they should have definitely spoke up for State Hospitals which are funded by the Govt & would give them & the mentally ill the proper care they so rightly deserved & this was told to me by a Dr. as I watch C-Span & a St. Senator from CA said she visited a wounded soldier in a Vet. Hospital & she asked him if he had see a Dr. & he said not for a long time so therefore Hillary & Obama didn't give the necessary items to tell the people of the USA how important it is to help the mentally ill people as many children also are getting guns to kill their friends in school so we must have gun control. I could go on & on in re to what is necessary for everyone in the USA. No bickering is necessary as this doesn't make for a good President.

Well, I agree with Hillary. I mean I like to write letters to people. I want to use my own words that capture my own feelings and ideas, I admit other people may and xould have worded it better but its their words to describe a situation, not mine. Anyone can forward an e-mail but no matter how boring mine are, they are mine. So in a way she is right....Its not pretty speeches and promises that get the job done. It's what comes from the heart.. He is telling the people what someone else thinks they want to hear. However I agree with him when they shouldn't be attacking each other when its the other party we should be comparing with.

It is difficult for me to feel that Hillary has ever really spearheaded a significant project that came to fruition. She uses the words, "Try", "looking for opportunities", "helped" instead of what she has actually accomplished. I read her lengthy and meaningless resume on Wikpedia. Not one thing did she actually do herself without being an "assistant" in any projects at hand.
As far as being a foreign diplomat and representative of our country, this was during the years she was First Lady, who it appeared at the time wanted to visit every country that would allow her to do so, to see the world on our dollars. The Clintons it was reported spent more on foreign travel that all other Presidents and their wives combined in the history of our country in the name of diplomacy and good will.
It seems unlikely that she would be able to negotiate with other leaders of the world when she cannot be civil to a fellow competitor for the nomination for candidacy to be President. Attacking her opponent is what we Americans are tired of in the process of the elections. It is nonsense to behave in such a manner. If she is qualified then stay on point/message and show the goods she has to deserve the office. Pulling others down is hurting herself, not the man, Mr. Obama, who has the character and good grace to be kind and civil, a truly brilliant gentleman.
Thank you.

I think we've all had enough negativity, and the crowd's response to Hillary's attacks on Obama speak of desperation and lack of understanding how that would affect the American people at this point in time. Early in the race, I was torn between the two candidates, but the more I see of Obama the more impressed I am with his vision and diplomacy. I still wouldn't mind seeing a "dream ticket" of Obama and Hillary, but I'll be all Obama in the primary.

The debates don't determine who the best President will be unless you really understand what is being said and not how the candidate is saying it. Barack is speaking to judgement and purpose. Hillary is trying to appear as the smartest kid in the class. I think when you really listen to them both, Barack is actually the smarter Kid and the better President.
