According to cops, Ortiz, 28, stabbed Sean Shurelds last Thursday night in the kitchen of an Upper Providence Township home. According to a criminal complaint, a copy of which you'll find here, the 41-year-old Shurelds, an Obama supporter, told Ortiz that the Illinois senator was "trashing" Clinton (apparently in regard to recent primary and caucus results). Ortiz, a Clinton supporter, replied that "Obama was not a realist." While not exactly fighting words, the verbal political tiff led to some mutual choking and punching. And, allegedly, a stabbing in the abdomen.
Wow. And I thought Crossfire was tough. Fox News has the additional odd detail that the police allegedly found the knife in the dishwasher. There is no truth to the rumor that the Clinton campaign messengered an absentee ballot to the County Jail.
In all seriousness, the lesson here is to try and keep this all in perspective. These two candidates agree on 98% of the issues. None of the stories I read updated Shurelds' condition, but since the incident occurred Thursday, it seems like the worst was avoided here. Let's hope this is the last literal knife fight of this campaign.
Update: To those who have posted comments to the effect that this is a nonsense story, I agree to a point. There is nothing substantive here with regard to the candidates. It is, however, an elegant metaphor for this campaign, and politics in general, and serves as a valuable object lesson, in my view.
