    Political Machine Readers Strike Back

    Posted:
    03/5/08
The Political Machine's Tommy Christopher is off of his meds, several readers report. A story I did earlier today entitled Clinton Handing Presidency to John McCain, provoked what I thought were some interesting responses, and I would like to share some of them here. While I stand by what I said, I also feel that it is only fair to recognize those readers who engaged the discussion thoughtfully, amusingly, or otherwise interestingly. It is these interactions that make this job extra rewarding.

Before I do that, however, I'd like to highlight something, in the spirit of Democratic Unity, that a reader did. An unidentified PMer punk'd the xenophobic Immigration News Daily. Even McCain fans should get a kick out of this:
    Re-Immigrants Flood Border Towns, Crossings

Local officials and Border Patrol agents have been overwhelmed recently with the thousands of Mexican nationals crossing back into Mexico. "We're not sure just what is causing this phenomena," reported Border Patrol spokesman Sgt. Thomas Christopher. Christopher, who has been stationed at the Mihuaraches border crossing for ten years, stated, "I've never seen anything like it and they're not stopping to talk." James Hernandez, a spokesman for an immigrants' rights group in Los Angeles, had this to say about the reverse migration: "It's just too crazy in the U.S. these days."
Now, those are some funny comments. Thanks for the shout-out, too. After the jump, my picks, with minimal commentary, for comments of the day on my earlier post. First, let me clarify, many of these responses assume things that I didn't say. To summarize, my problem is with the Clinton's strategy, not with her candidacy, and my assessment that she will not likely be the nominee is based on the delegate math and the fact that I don't think it is at all likely that the Superdelegates will overturn the popular vote. Furthermore, on the substance, I find the two candidates extremely close, and I believe that they both possess superlative leadership and political skills. Having said that, it's your turn now.

TC, you're an idiot!! After this last 7 years, the republicans have a snoballs chance in hell of winning this election!! The Republicans I know are switching sides....saying the US can't survive another Republican that walks the walk of Bush!!! We are ready for anything close to the prosperity of the Clinton years!!
There were a bunch like this, so I too the first one. I'm not afraid to be called an idiot, but this is kind of my point. There should be no way for the Democrats to lose this year, but in my view, we have handed them an opening.

A clear, cogent and concise analysis. Damn sad too, I might add.-t John Q. Dumbass Writes: "It's pronounced 'DOO-MAHS', damnit!"
There were lots of people who agreed with me, but this one was short and funny.

This article is b.s. So your saying the it will be Hillary's fault if the Democrats loose the election? Let me correct you, the democrats will loose the election if they put an inexperience man who can't stand on his two feet as the nominee. the rhetoric of hope and change is GETTING OLD. If I want motivation, I seek a motivational speaker, or better yet attend CHURCH... Otherwise I need solutions, and someone who is ready to fight, not imply that he is too above the fray to get down and dirty.. please get over yourself... I keep saying, only people who believe in RAIMBOWS, HEARTS AND UNICORNS will vote for OBAMA... Vote smart - VOTE MCCAIN...
A couple of readers had funny follow-ups to this one. Chris M writes:
lol. i believe in hearts, and rainbows. i can feel my heart beating, and i've seen rainbows with my own two eyes. i guess thats why i'm voting for obama, it has nothing to do with the integrity of the man, its because i believe in rainbows. great social commentary "california love is back", that makes perfect sense.
A reader named Hako had a very measured response, with which I disagree, but it is well-stated:
My feelings is, and has always been, that Obama will not win the general election against a strong Republican nominee. I also believe that Hillary can win the general election. We can learn a lot from history, but we are living in different times.... and making history as well. The weakness for Obama is has thin resume, and his perceived lack of strength on national defense. He is seen by some as a light-weight on foreign policy, naive and untested. John McCain will look solid and assured by comparison, and promises of "change" cannot negate the harsh realities of our modern world. Hillary is perceived as more experienced and well-rounded, more knowledgeable and credible on national defense and foreign policy. There would be no glaring difference between herself and McCain, certainly not enough to give McCain a "pass" on these issues. I think the idea that Hillary will give the election to McCain is the result of flawed thinking. She lies in the middle, in many ways, between the two extremes of McCain and Obama. She is younger than McCain, older and wiser than Obama. She is not a "hawk" like McCain, but seen as much more credible than Obama on national defense. She isn't going to just continue the Bush legacy of on-going military interventiion, but understands that concrete "change" will happen within the realities of Washington. Hillary is, to me, the only hope the Democrats have of beating John McCain. I was told a few days ago that I was in denial about Hillary. She would be knocked out in Texas and Ohio by the insurmountable Obama wave. I begged to differ, and do so again. Hillary will defeat McCain in the general election, defying all the odds and nay-sayers, if she is given the opportunity.
Frequent poster Katherine offered this assessment of the 3am ad:
I don't see anything wrong with the 3am ad. It simply points out who is more experienced, and that is Hillary's whole thing. I also don't care if it's a rip off ad from decades ago. I really don't. I didn't feel "scared" when I saw it either. All I kept hearing was that the kids were safe in their beds. Obama wants to say that it was to scare up votes, but if he gets scared or if anyone gets scared from an itty bitty widdle 30 second TV ad, they got issues.

Furthermore, how is Obama supposed to be Commander-in-Chief if he gets all worked up over a 30 second TV ad? Try to be BRAVE Obama, ok. At least she's not lying about him in campaign literature like he did. Gimme a break that the 3am ad scared people.

Watch the early evening news for 10 minutes and enjoy learning about arsons, rapes, murders, bombs, guns, child predators, and escaped convicts, etc. Americans watch that crap together as a family--with their CHILDREN--as they eat dinner. I think people looked at the 3am ad after Obama said it was to scare up votes, and people were like....? wtf is he talking about.
I wish I had time to share all of the great comments from this post, but I hope this is a representative sample. It is rare that so many of the comments are from people who actually read the article. I encourage you to go back and check through them. I also want to say that, despite our disagreements, I appreciate the time you all tok to read and respond. And Diana, let me again apologize for the temperature of our exchange. Mea culpa.

In closing, I'd like to give you the random comment of the year. Al, if you are reading this, 2 things: disable your "caps lock", and what the f*** are you talking about?
SOME TIME ,DURING A BREAK ,SOMEONE WILL TALK ABOUT THE SOUTHWEST PRISON SYSTEM ,IN WHICH A LARGE PERCENTAGE IS MAKE UP OF BLACKS AND LATINOS ,TALK ABOUT ATTICA ,IT WILL SPREAD LIKE WILDFIRE AND ENGULF THE WHOLE REGION PRISON SYSTEM SO MRS,CLINTON AND MR. OBAMA ,,, STOP INFIGHTING AND GET THE SHOW ON THE ROAD OR BOTH BECOME LOSER AND WE WILL BE BACK TO SQUARE ONE, AND AMERICA WILL FILE FOR A COURT ORDER AGAINST BOTH LOSER.

RG, Welcome back! I missed you. I agree with most of what you said, but I want to make clear, I don't think the average voter is a dumbass. The average voter has a belief system that naturally leads them to one candidate or another, and at worst they operate under false assuptions fed to them by the media. The elections are decided, however, by a specific type of undecided dumbass.
