Borrowing liberally from fellow blogger Justin Paulette's title 'Two White Liberal Guilts' , I'd like to add one of my own. I could have named this post 'Silly Old White Lady Follows Her Candidate's Lead and Tosses Long-Time Black Constituency Under the Bus', but it wouldn't fit.
Former Congresswoman, Vice Presidential candidate and Clinton supporter Geraldine Ferraro offers this gem up in defense of....something:
If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept.
The entire interview is here if you're looking for more context. Good Luck.
So again, we have here a Clinton supporter whining that everyone is blinded by the concept of the Black Candidate. No chance that he's dynamic, brilliant, appealing and has run one of the best campaigns either party has seen in awhile. No, he got lucky 'cause he's black.
There's much bitterness on the part of women who have traditionally championed for women politicians. They feel cheated that this young upstart would come along and ruin their chances. I've actually seen commentary from women who say that it has to be a woman first. After all, black men were allowed to vote long before women were.
I'm a woman and I remember being very excited about Mrs. Ferraro being the first viable female candidate for Vice President. Unfortunately, she became the poster child for Why Clinton Needs To Release Her Tax Returns. I've been waiting for a woman president, too. I always thought we'd have a woman before a black man. But for me, Senator Clinton is the wrong woman. And as I woman, I don't much like seeing other women drag down people like this.
