A Political Ad So Dumb, It Works

The premise of Mike Judge's 2006 movie Idiocracy is that, over the years, the human race will become less and less smart, having fewer intelligences and mental capacities for thought. In the film, the president is a professional wrestler, the country is being run by Carl's Jr. and men are obsessed with lattes. But the premise, I think, is wrong. We are not getting dumber: When you consider the official 2008 LOLection®, for instance, with it's nutty songs, sexy governors, inappropriate rapping and leprechauns, after a while you become awash in the realization that there is serious Darwinian brilliance behind it all.

Case in point: Laurinda Calongne, a Louisiana Republican running for a U.S. House seat, has released a campaign advertisement that is being called "awful" by some, trend-setting by others.

But, one thing is for sure: This is not a mere case of a political ad reflecting a growingly pea-brained America. This is about desperation. This is about winning. This is about the world being too quick, too smart and too busy to stop and think. This is about the end of subtlety. That's all.

[WARNING: The following video contains a really bad imitation of Bill Clinton]

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
