Using Bitter in North Carolina

This report seems to indicate that Hillary may already be giving up on Barack's bitter controversy and the gaffe has limited currency in Democratic circles:

But the issue doesn't seem to be sticking. Clinton himself has been silent on the issue. But at the first two events of the day, the campaign has sent one of Carolina's hometown boys out to push the issue before Clinton takes the stage. Tom Hendrickson, a Clinton supporter and former Democratic Party chairman, included a reading of Obama's comments in his introduction of Clinton.

...

Hendrickson repeated the sentiment at a later stop in Winston, but dropped the direct mention of Obama as the source of the quote.

...

By the third stop of the day in Goldsboro, Hendrickson did not even take the stage.

Yes, that's not the way to use this. Talk radio and the usual conservative media will do the heavy lifting for you. Rush is already carrying your water for "operation chaos" and you can bet that he'll be on this from the top to the bottom of the hour come Monday. But Hillary is already drawing guffaws for her attempt to portray herself as a god-fearing gun-toting rural daughter. Nobody's going to buy this for a second.

The way for Hillary to use this is in general broad overarching themes. Hillary is already doing best with lower income white voters (90% in Southeast OH) build on that to portray Obama (in general terms mind you) as the voice of the urban elite, versus Hillary as more mainstream America. That should be a tough sell, but Obama is helping.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
