Update: According to the latest statement from the Kennedy family, the Senator suffered a seizure. 6:06PM Update: According to Kennedy spokesperson Stephanie Cutter, via the AP, Senator Kennedy is "conscious, talking, joking with family." Senator Edward Kennedy was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital this morning, suffering symptoms of a stroke. From CNN:
A well-informed Democratic source in Massachusetts said the 76-year-old senator had "symptoms of a stroke" at the Kennedy family compound in Hyannis Port.
An official with the Hyannis Fire Department said it received a 911 call from the Kennedy compound at 8:19 a.m. and transported a patient to the hospital, arriving at 8:50 a.m. The official would not be more specific.
Kennedy had surgery in October to clear his carotid artery in hopes of preventing a stroke.
This situation is still unfolding, with hospital sources saying Kennedy is "under evaluation."
Senator Kennedy is very influential in Democratic circles, and is beloved by many. All three candidates have expressed their concern, and hopes for his quick recovery. According to CNN, Senator John Kerry is at the hospital now.
Cape Cod Online was first to report the emergency, and has a photo of the airlift.
Hospital officials are scheduled to make a statement shortly. Stay tuned for updates after the jump.
There is now video available from MSNBC:
The AP is now calling the episode a "seizure."
CNN reports that Kennedy family sources say that the Senator called a family member from the hospital after he had been in the Emergency Room to say he would not be able to make it to a charity luncheon today.
CNN also reports a new statement from the Kennedy family:
Senator Kennedy experienced a seizure this morning. He is undergoing a battery of tests at Massachusetts General Hospital to determine the cause of the seizure. Senator Kennedy is resting comfortably, and it is unlikely we will know anything more for the next 48 hours.
Further reports are that, according to family friends, the family is cautiously optimistic that the Senator will make a complete recovery.
As I wait for the hospital to issue a statement, let me just say that Senator Kennedy is a revered and influential figure for liberalism, and a lightning rod for the right, but all, I am certain, are lad to hear the encouraging news coming from the Kennedy family.
Senator Barack Obama said, "Senator Kennedy is one of my favorite people. My thoughts and prayers are with him."
Since it looks like Senator Kennedy will pull through, I feel like less of an ass for noting the unfortunate juxtaposition during Hillary Clinton's remarks. I don't have video yet, but as Senator Clinton spoke fondly and hopefully of her colleague while campaigning in Kentucky, it was impossible not to notice the pyramid of "Maker's Mark" barrels directly behind her.
Here is some more recent video from the Associated Press:
Sen. Kennedy has been going all out to bail out/support Obama, and the best Obama can do is to have his camp contact the wife?. (The ticker across the screen on CNN network reports that Obama's response is "my camp is trying to contact Sen Kennedy's wife".) I should hope that means he is going to speak with the wife personally, at least.

Early indications from his family sound positive. Sounds like the seizure was relatively benign (most likely not a CVA/stroke, despite earlier speculations). No indications of any residual neurological deficits. I hope he has a speedy recovery....yes, even despite his recent attacks on Hillary ;-)

I never wish ill health on anyone & I hope he recovers fully. At the same time judging from comments I've read about him since he made the recommendation that Hillary NOT be VP I can see why such a thing happened. The "much beloved" got hit below the belt over & over & for good reason. I sincerely hope he suffers no lingering effects. What goes around comes around....one way or another. He needs to be around to see the outcome of this "unfair" election.

I hope he recovers soon. Besides endorsing Obama, he is pretty politically correct.

Interesting how you can be OK with Teddy and hate Obama. I'm a Kennedy Democrat and I have mixed feelings about him. How odd. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Someone ask the president wannabe if he will take his presidential oath on the bible. I think we all know the answer to that - there will be no answer.
Someone ask the junior senator what 57 states he is referring to in his campaign. The only 57 state group is the 57 Islamic states - you know - the "peaceful religion"
Someone ask the inexperienced new boy what he thinks of an institution that would overlook the more experienced female candidate for the new fellow with the charisma, the new suit, the new jokes and the good ole boy democrat mentality of screwing the more qualified female candidate for the job so the new guy can take his step up the ladder.
Now for the enlightened liberals to take their turn to call me racist for pointing out the " inconvenient truth" The junior senator has lost his bearings

Senator Kennedy is very influential in Democratic circles, and is beloved by many.....he does not, however represent a majority of Democrats, nor does Kerry.

OBAMA'S 57 STATE REMARK AND WHAT HE MEANT..
Obama cought with his pants down.. In an interview Obama stated that their 57 states... Well my friends... He was right... But too bad they aren't American states.... They are Islamic..
Organisation of the Islamic Conference
The Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) is an international organization with a permanent delegation to the United Nations. It groups 57 nations, most of which are Islamic, from the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, Caucasus, Balkan, Southeast Asia, South Asia and South America. The official languages of the organization are Arabic, English and French.
MAKES YOU WONDER WHY OBAMA SAID THEIR ARE 57 STATES HUMMM...
"Everyone is so concerned now where all of the candidates are born. McCain was born on a military base in Panama. Hillary was born outside Chicago, and if you believe the media, Barack Obama was born in a manger." --Jay Leno

Stupid mick. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TF......once again, you have me LMFAO! YOU oughtta know, Mr. Fitzsimmons. Great to be back, thanks for your concern. I've been sans computer during my move and the idiots at Comcast took 3 days to get their asses over to my new house to install my broadband and DVR, etc. Dolts. BTW--as GOOD as Disney is concerning their customer service, well that's as BAD as Comcast is! As a result, I've been suffering from a severe case of internet withdrawal. OK, it IS a topical remark to be making.....and have you seen Hillary's statement about Teddy-boyo? Hold on tight for tomorrow's edition of VOTW for that gem, along with Barely Political's new vid about Billdo. The reverberations/aftershocks are still being felt from the sound of my laughter after watching that one. Another good one (I missed you guys ;-):

Senator Kennedy has been the most influential polititian in the democratic party the last 30 yrs and his record of fighting for the poor is there to speak for itself. if all the polititians in congress cared as much about the poor as sen.kennedy did, poverty would have been eliminated long time ago in America, and all the people would be able to afford healthcare by now. get well senator.

He sure didn't care about that poor girl he drove off the bridge. According to the police report she was alive about 2 hours after it went over. All his good deeds for the poor cannot make up for that woman's life. I don't give a care if he lives or dies. The three good Kennedy's died too young. But that's what they say only the good die young.

Glad you got settled in Diana, we missed you! Teddy has always had problems. It was hugely audacious for him to even enter politics after Jack had appointed Bobby as AG. I think he was what, 14? Those crazy Kennedy boys though, ya gotta love 'em. He ran for prez in 80 when he obviously did not want the job but he ruined Carter in the meantime. That was a true display of mental illness. I think we see a wiser Teddy these days but it's a hard thing to put money on. Have you read the depositions from the Smith rape trial? Teddy is apparently the eternal teenager.
