As Andrew Sullivan points out, this isn't a gaffe. Like the president, John McCain wants a long-term military presence in Iraq. Something on the order of Korea. That's why bringing the troops home "is not too important." Have a look at the video that's circling the blogosphere:
A programming note, I'll be off for a couple of weeks on a much needed family vacation. Be well, gentle readers.
Oh sorry, I didn't realize South Korea was part of our "empire". I thought we were protecting south korea from the constant threat of its hostile neighbor to the north.
We have a military presence all over the world, even in Germany, so what is the big deal?
Oh and if anyone believes that we will NOT be having a presence on the continent of Africa under an Obama presidency is just kidding themselves. Obama just hasn't told you yet...of course he hasn't told you much of anything, but that does not seem to matter. I will bet anybody right now that we will intervene in African tribal wars under Obama. At least the Iraqis do have oil and a sense of civility, as cold as it sounds it is true.
And we did break it, so we need to fix it.
I'm sorry I am with McCain on this one. Andrew Sullivan went as nutty as a fruitcake when he saw Obama. At least he can admit he has a crush openly.

IMPEACH GEORGE BUSH FOR ILLEGITIMATE WAR!!!
McCain's promise to continue waging war in Iraq until we "win" is called into question by these revelations by former White House Press Sec'y Scott McClellan. The Bush admin. actively deceived the American people, Congress, the U.N., and individuals within Bush's admin.such as Colin Powell. To continue squandering the scarce financial resources of the U.S. in order to "save face" is utter stupidity.
The Iraq War has driven the U.S. into a recession which Warren Buffet says will be very long and deep. Our grandchildren will be taxed to pay-off the huge federal deficit created by Bush with his war. And the people of Iraq received better treatment than Americans caught in Hurricane Katrina. The U.S. was dropping "meals ready to eat" and bottled water to the people of Iraq at the same time Katrina victims were left starving, and dying from dehydration, in New Orleans.
Bush should be impeached for his wreckless disregard for the American people.

personally, I can't wait till Obama is declared the "official" nominee at the convention because once that happens, the GOP will go into attack mode and completely destroy him.
and I can't wait

Whether we leave tomorrow or stay a hundred years in the end Maliki and Co. will be more allied with Iran than the USA, just as they've always been. A lot of these guys used to live in Tehren in exile. Iraq's second biggest business is Iranian religious tourism.
If you want a government independent of Iran Sadr is your best bet. Even though he hates Americans he has said he'd be happy to hire our oil field service firms to pump Iraqi oil.
And what's with the desperation to force US military bases down Iraqi throats? We already have bases in Afghanistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and elsewhere. How many more do we need? Why keep pushing for bases in Iraq when it gets our soldiers blown up and gives Bin Laden talking points in his recruiting videos?

DK,
you are correct, sir! Allow me to re-post from Caleb's story. Enjoy your vaca! --------------------------------------------------- I agree that isolating that phrase misses the point. Upon reading the whole exchange, I was left to wonder: What the fuck is McCain talking about? Taken as a whole, the paragraph makes no sense at all. -------------SEN. MCCAIN: "No, but that's not too important. What's important is the casualties in Iraq, Americans are in South Korea, Americans are in Japan, American troops are in Germany. That's all fine. American casualties and the ability to withdraw (So, what matters is reducing casualties to the levels that we have in Japan and South Korea, right?);
we will be able to withdraw. General Petraeus is going to tell us in July when he thinks we are(are able to withdraw, not going to withdraw. So Petraeus will tell us when our casualties will drop to zero?).
But the key to it is that we don't want any more Americans in harm's way. (So, we don't send any more troops?)
That way, they (the troops who are already there)will be safe (because we aren't sending more troops?), and serve our country and come home with honor and victory(when Iraq is like Japan?), not in defeat, which is what Senator Obama's proposal would have done. I'm proud of them. And they're doing a great job. And we are succeeding and it's fascinating that Senator Obama still doesn't realize that."
But McCain has said previously, by your own agreement, Caleb, that if things in Iraq are like they are in Japan and South Korea, there's no reason to withdraw.
So, Petraeus will tell us when the casualties will stop, so we can be able to withdraw, but won't? Is there any credible foreign policy expert in the world who sees Iraq transforming into Japan in this lifetime?
McCain isn't detached from the realities on the ground, he's just detached from reality.
