Jesse Helms: American Garbage

This is the best article regarding Helms' death I have come across today. Not only is it true, I think that it was a little gracious in the criticism of Helms', a man who was lived his life, and attempted to mold politics around his archaic, out of touch, mindset.

"Good rithens to bad rubbish" is what my Grandma always told me - and that rule certainly applies in this situation.

Even though I'm not dancing in the streets due to his death, that's because I wasn't paying attention to Senate politics while he was in it. That said, I defy anyone to write a better account of this man.

My dad a former Army sergeant, told me a story about how he was eating mess at the "sergeant's table" when the lieutenant came up and said "Gene Autry's just been drafted, and we were wondering if he could sit at the sergeant's table." Without looking up, my dad said "Well, I guess I can stand it if the bum doesn't sing." And then Autry's unhappy voice mournfully exclaimed "You sho' don't pull yo' punches, boy."

Jesse was responsible, directly or indirectly, for a significant portion of the dysfunctionality inherent in the modern political system. He was likewise responsible, between his support of tobacco manufacturers and his support of right-wing dictators like Pinochet and the murderous military juntas of Central America, for the sufferings and deaths of thousands. I hope God can forgive him, 'cause frankly I'm not sure that I can.

Helms was elected to five terms as Senator of North Carolina. He must have been doing something right.

Yes , he was against the Martin Luther King holiday. He knew the truth about King and his associations with Communist Party USA, and was one of the few who had the courage to speak out.

After five terms in the Senate, Helms did not seek a sixth term in 2002 because of recurring health problems. Has his health been better he might still be a strong voice in the Senate.

"The United Nations"- I don't believe Helms wanted to be an enemy of the U.N. But he was pro America. He realized that the U.S is a sovereign nation- we don't answer to the U.N. or anyone else. He also knew that the U.N.'s very existence is mostly anti-American and anti-capitalism.

"Sex perverts"- Anybody who has no leniency toward sex perverts can be my Senator anytime.


"Poor people"- Jesse and his wife adopted a boy who was a nine-year old and had cerebral palsy. Helms was a big advocate of the tobacco industry because much of rural North Carolina's economy relies on it.

Helms was instrumental in obtaining the black box to Korean Air flight #007, which had been shot down by the Soviets in 1983. In his letter to Boris Yeltsin, Helms requested the box as well as info about the fate of the 269 people on the plane. In the letter, Helms also condemned the forced labor camps in the USSR. He was also outspoken in his opposition of Fidel Castro. Helms was vehemently against granting China "favored nation" status due to their civil rights violations.

Lastly, Helms was pro-life. In one of his memoirs, he wrote, "I will never be silent about the death of those who cannot speak for themselves".

Doesn't sound like an enemy of the poor to me.

No country on earth has done more for it's minority citizens than the United States. This country has done everything for Negroes except wipe their butts for them. Today when my family was sitting together watching television together and an announcement came on talking about the death of Jesse Helms, I commented that I disliked the man so much, I could hardly bear to look at his image on the TV without feeling ill. I am a 70 year old white souther woman married to a 71 year old white man from Pennsylvania. MY 44 year old son asked why I felt that way, since to much that was being said about him seemed to say he was a great Senator, and American. I couln't really give him a short and easy answer to the complexities of Helms' way of thinking and his actions as a Senator and an American. When I showed him this article, he seemed to "get it". It so accurately says what I feel about Jesse Helms. I hope he finds peace, where ever in his afterlife he ends up. HE CERTAINLY COULD NOT HAVE BEEN A HAPPY MAN AT ANY POINT IN HIS LIFE. That much hatred and evil must have eaten him alive from the inside out.
