Foreign Service Workers Banned from Speech

When did we become the China or the former Soviet Union? According to the government's own website, the Hatch Act allows federal employees to attend political rallies and meetings and to express opinions about candidates and issues. This even applies to various federal employees with restrictions on their partisan political activity, such as CIA and the NSA.

As a former (now retired) civil servent in the United States, I remember how stringently the Hatch Act was enforced by the three federal agencies I was employed by. We were not allowed to work for or actively support any partisan candidate at any level. We could not discuss politics in any form when dealing with the public and were told not to attend partisan activities. We not only had to avoid partisan politics but what could, in any way, shape or form, be viewed as an appearance of partisanship. In other words, as public servents, we were told not to go to rallies or events held by candidates of any party. I was employed during the Carter, Reagan, Bush I, Clinton and Bush II administrations. So, it doesn't sound like this is paranoia, fear or worry on the part of the Repulicans. It's simply business as usual for Federal employees.

Jack-The Logan Act forbids an unauthorized citizen from negotiating with foreign governments. The key word there is negotiating, and it pretty much applies to disputes between the US and other countries. He can talk all he wants about his own views. It's an obscure act that was pushed thru Congress at the time because the party in control was miffed that a private citizen was being hailed for actually getting something done.

THE LOGAN ACT The Logan Act, codified at 18 U.S.C. § 953, states: Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both. This section shall not abridge the right of a citizen to apply, himself or his agent, to any foreign government or the agents thereof for redress of any injury which he may have sustained from such government or any of its agents or subjects.

PEGGY: You were robbed -- The Hatch Act PROTECTS federal employees so they MAY attend partisan activities while they are 'off duty.' Looks like you should have learned the laws that protected you.
