The debate over who played the race card last week, if anyone did, is starting to peter out, and it seems that everyone is willing to walk away from the issue with minor dents on Obama, and nary a scratch on John McCain.
Obama's remarks about not looking like the faces on U.S. currency were either about race or not, but presumably, they were about the same thing that McCain's use of Obama on the $100 bill was about.
Less clear to me, at least, is whether the McCain campaign was using subtle racial messaging in its "Celeb" ad. My colleague, Caleb Howe, joins the Daily Show's Jon Stewart in mocking the notion that the inclusion of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears in the ad was a nod to miscegenation, similar to the ads run against Harold ford, Jr.
As I reported last week, I missed it at first, too. Stewart and I, not being from the South, are far less attuned to the "white women with black men" aspect of racism. Up here, the racism is mostly about crime and employment.
The thing about subtle racial coding is this: It's subtle and coded. Luckily, David Gergen is familiar with Republican messaging, and acts as a Rosetta Stone for us in this clip:
"Everybody knows he's black but there has been a very intentional effort to paint him as somebody outside the mainstream; other. He's not one of us. It's below the radar screen. I think the McCain campaign has been scrupulous about not directly saying it. But it's the subtext of this campaign. Everybody knows it. There are certain kind of signals. As a native of the South, I can tell you, when you see this Charlton Heston ad, 'The One," that's code for 'he's uppity.' 'He ought to stay in his place.' Everybody gets that who's from a southern background. When McCain comes out and starts talking about affirmative action, I'm against quotas, we get what that's about. That gets across."
The McCain campaign still has not come up with a sensible answer for the selection of these 2 particular luminaries, saying at first that they were the two biggest celebrities in the world. That's not even close to true, and Paris Hilton has never drawn a crod of "fans" that I'm aware of.
They could have easily chosen Oprah Winfrey, who has already been villified as unqualified to endorse a candidate.
They could have used any number of the actual celebrities who have endorsed Obama. That, plus McCain's own dismal record on keeping up with the times, racially speaking, makes for a compelling argument. Plus, when you belong to the party of the Southern Strategy, it is up to you to make sure you don't get within yards of that line.
stfu.....t.c. you just cant help yourself, can you ? You keep pushing the race card right along just like your candidate. Glad to see that you do because its starting to really piss off the electorate against obama. McCains ads were not racist, but you have to keep pushing that concept, igniting the racial tensions that obama himself has pushed from the beginning of the election cycle. So, by all means, keep it up, it ensures that your boy is nothing but an unelectable, inexperienced RACIST. And you must be one too.

Ralph, nice trick, calling Obama my "boy." So then I call you out on it, and you say, "What?!?! Me!?!?"
Very illustrative of my point.

You have got to be kidding. Taken to this extreme, any ad is racist, including Obamas.
The real problem is not racism, it is the fact that Obama has nothing to run on, other than the race card.

(NYC) YANKEE MEDIA OUT OF TOUCH WITH USA!!
TOMMY CHRISTOPHER: As I reported last week, I missed it at first, too. Stewart and I, not being from the South, are far less attuned to the "white women with black men" aspect of racism. Up here, the racism is mostly about crime and employment.
REPLY: It is not just the aspect of racism between the east of the Mississippi North and South it’s each and every aspect of each and every part of the cultural difference from the Republic of California, Republic of Alaska, The Hawaiian Islands, The Native American Indiana Terror ties from Oklahoma to the Canadian Boarders.
You Tommy Christopher, Keith Olberman, Bill O’Reilly, and the entire New York City Propaganda Mill of the Military Industrial Complex System are the problem. If you can make it in New York City you can’t make it anywhere, that’s the biggest of the Big Apple Propaganda lies out of Propaganda Central USA.
The entire (NYC) Propaganda System is OH! , BILL CLINTON IS NOT A RACIST, what a con job. The (PN’s) Perspective Nominee for the Imperial Presidency of the Good Old US of A knows that racism is part of this nation’s fabric and both are playing the card like Charles Gorman and Contract Bidding Bridge. But, being a (NYC) Propagandist of the Military Industrial Complex you may not have gotten you talking points for the day.
You like the rest of your (NYC) bunch are part of this nation’s problem and not its solution. What’s good for Wall St. is not what’s good for Main St., and what (NYC) thinks is not what the nation must think, or agree with.
You Tommy Christopher are just another hack (NYC) Propagandist, who can’t see beyond the Bridges leading out of the City.

The reason you 'missed it' at first is because it isn't there and you weren't aware of the spin that can be put on anything to make it 'appear' racist. Did you see the councilman who went into a tailspin when the words 'black hole' were used?!? Anything, no matter how ridiculous, can be twisted to fit the agenda. Paris Hilton and Britney Spears were used as an example of celebrity for celebrity's sake. No talent, no substance.

It should be of no surprise that the race for the White House will be about race. Mccain has problems...1.) His message is old; 2.) His delivery is boring; and 3.) His style is stale. What is left for him? You guessed it! Race! By injecting race, he will try to awaken the divide that exists in America. By injecting race, he will try to implant fear in the subconscious. Fear is a powerful tool and it has won elections in the past. Mccains recent actions do not surprise me they are just sad to see.

This is all just crap created by the nazis in the politically correct circles on the college campuses that have no real solutions to anything, but have got us all afraid of stating the truth or using words that may in some situations be racially insensitive at worst but in other circumstances be slang terms of endearment depending on who uses it or who hears it. As for me, you can call me racist and I don't give a damn! I believe that every person, in every culture on the planet, is racist. It's all just in a matter of degrees, which to me is like splitting hairs and tantamount to wasting my precious time. Its about time every one in this country today let their skin thicken a bit, and let go of these divisive issues that are not very likely to be settled to everyone's total satisfaction in the first place. The truth is its been this way since the dawm of time and will be that way when we're all dead an buried. Besides we know Clinton has trouble and a history of admitting to guilt. So where do we go from here. I say we have a serious debate on whether this country still believes in the traditional belief in self reliance. Or has it succumbed to the socialists notion that they need big government to do for them as they are incapable of dealing with life as it comes at them and do not have a clue as how to deal with normal ups and downs in life. It seems to me that the youth today need a governmental tit to suck on or somethin,g as self reliance seems absolutely foreign to them, unless your talking about their civil rights, which their all well versed in, yet in which very few seem to realize all the civic duties that go along with having them.

I'm so tired of the race issue, it's exhausting. I always thought I wasn't racist, but now I'm not sure. After all thats been revealed to be racist thru out the primaries & this election, it's seems I could be a racist & not know it. I'd like to think I'm not, but I could be screwing up somewhere with codes I didn't know about.

Anyone who employs the concepts of subtext and code to call others racists remind me of Uncle Leo. If it rains on Sabath it must be that the weather man is an anti-semite.

TC. The ad was code. Look at the phallic symbols interspersed with blondes and Obama. I remember what they did to Harold Ford. They photoshopped his picture to make him look much darker. They had one commercial with a tall black man walking out of a dark tunnel and then of course the one that everyone has seen with the blonde throwing a kiss and saying "Harold, call me." There is a lot of code going on this year. For example, Lack of experience, arrogant= uppity Fist Bump= terrorist fist bump Michelle= attitude Don't think for one minute that the republicans don't spend a fortune on how to "catapult the propaganda."

There is no doubt John McCain is an angry bigot. His bigotry cuts across race and genda. He has no respect for women, including his wife and he's internally dressed in a white sheet. As they say, a fool at 40 is a fool forever. But at 72 years old that's takes the cake, this wrinkled up face should act his age and focus on the issues rather than the individual attacks on his opponent. Whatever gain McCain is making with personal attacks on Obama is only temporary. I'm glad Obama was smart enough to reject McCain's call for joint townhall meetings because those meetings would only bring on more childish personal attacks. McCain does not set the agenda for Obama's campaign and also why should Obama do Mccain a favor by helping him with townhall meetings. If McCain is that too eager to debate, then he should not have any pre-condition on the debate style or format. John McCain is nothing but a bumbling idiot that has been a do-nothing Senator for over a quarter of a century. If citizens of Arizona are smart, they should vote for Obama. John McCain has been bragging about not bringing any special projects or monies to his home state and to me, that's foolish pride and people of Arizona should be outraged. Why did they send him to the Senate? To go and snooze while other members are busy getting things for their states.
