Republican Presidential nominee John McCain has released a new ad called, "Praising McCain," featuring a surprising cast of characters: Democratic lawmakers!
Most of the ad is filled with the kind of glad-handed banter that you'd hear on any given day in the Senate, where, in the interest of comity, even Satan would be referred to as "the distinguished gentleman from West Gehenna."
But then, there's the dismount:
SEN. CLINTON: I know Senator McCain has a lifetime of experience he will bring to the White House. And Senator Obama has a speech he gave in 2002.
I'm going to resist the urge to say "I told you so," but then immediately succumb to it. I told you so, but I don't think this will help McCain much. In fact, this could turn out to be a huge mistake for him.
First of all, aside from Senator Clinton's dismissive clincher, the ad comes off as really desperate. Think about it. Who has to pay millions to run an ad telling you that he's a good guy?
Also, who calls himself "a Maverick?" Do you see me saying, "Tommy Christopher is roguishly handsome" in my profile? OK, bad example. But there are certain things you can and can't call yourself. You can call yourself "honest", but not "above reproach." You can call yourself "knowledgeable," but not "Super-smart!"
Does a real Maverick keep a detailed library of all the times he's been called a Maverick, in case his Maverick-osity is ever called into question?
The reason this is a problem for McCain is, he's giving Obama a huge opening here to push several narratives that are damaging for McCain, ones that the mainstream media have already picked up on.
Most glaring is that the wheels have come off of the "Straight Talk Express." All of these quotes, save those from Obama and Clinton, predate the 2006 mid-term election, going back as far as 2000. Here's a quick list of the dates for each.
SEN. DASCHLE: He can work with Democrats on key issues whether it's campaign finance reform or tobacco policy. He's worked with us.- (Sen. Tom Daschle, Press Conference, 3/10/00)
SEN. BIDEN: John McCain is a personal friend, a great friend and I would be honored to run with or against John McCain.- (Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" 8/2/05)
SEN. KERRY: I have enormous respect for him. He's a courageous, patriotic American who stands up for what he believes.- (CNBC's "The News," 4/7/04)
HOWARD DEAN: I admire Senator McCain greatly, he's one of the people we modeled our campaign over because he is very direct, very blunt, and nobody has to guess at what he's thinking.- (CBS's, "Face The Nation," 1/5/03)
SEN. FEINGOLD: I love John McCain, he's a great guy.- (ABC's, "This Week," 8/13/06)
SEN. OBAMA: Since coming to Washington, I've believed that the right approach begins with the proposal put forward by Senator Lieberman and Senator McCain.- (Sen. Barack Obama, Hearing, Committee On Environment and Public Works, U.S. Senate, 1/30/07)
SEN. CLINTON: I know Senator McCain has a lifetime of experience he will bring to the White House. And Senator Obama has a speech he gave in 2002.- (CNN's "The Situation Room," 3/3/08)
The Obama quote is from January of 2007, well before the primaries began, and as I said earlier, is typical Senate comity boilerplate. Why is this important? Because these quotes only reinforce the fact that John McCain has sold his soul and embraced policies that he knows are wrong, like the Bush tax cuts, just to gain support from the conservative base. He has courted the endorsements of those he once called "agents of intolerance." His Maverick past only brings his pandering present into sharper relief.
And what about that conservative base? Does McCain think that the Obama campaign can't dig up 30 seconds worth of clips featuring Republicans eviscerating McCain (that great Ron Paul clip from the Reagan Library debate), and praising Obama (like Gordon Smith's current ad)? I guarantee you there will be just such a memo in my inbox before the end of business today.
That brings me to the most effective, yet potentially devastating, part of the ad: Hillary Clinton.
I imagine the response to the Clinton clip will go a little something like this:
This gives Obama a huge opening to turn around the question of judgment on Iraq and beat McCain all over the place with it.
There are loads more clips of Hillary Clinton praising McCain while slamming Obama, a strategy that I took severe issue with, but there is a great way to neutralize them. Vice President Hillary Clinton. I think I said it best when I said this:
What's great about this, too, is that it effectively neutralizes most of the damage Clinton laid on Obama in the primaries. The media, and the Republicans, will throw the Clinton campaign's quotes at Obama, but her campaign will be there to hit 'em right back at McCain. Only Clinton's campaign has the brass ones to pivot their narrative on a dime, chuck the whole silverware drawer at you, then scold you for covering up your face.
Yes, the thought of Hillary Clinton on Obama's ticket fills me with joy. For years, we've watched the GOP make "Boom-Boom" Mancini out of the Democrats, but now, I laugh at the thought. Barack had a measure of the high ground and good, solid policies to protect him a little. McCain has tissue paper and faith in a merciful God.
What about other comments by his own party lately? His own mother told us to pinch our nose if we were to take him as President? She also said labelled his ad with Britney and Paris as "Very Stupid". I am not worried at all! It will be fun to quote Mitt Romney when he is picked for the Vice-President spot.

Well, finally the truth imerges its beautiful little head. John McCain is a maverick, and is the finest example of a leader that CAN work across party lines. He will be a real breath of fresh air in the White House.

Just mention Trinity church, Rev.Wright,Pelger,Farrakhan,Ayers.Wright ia anti-America,anti-white and anti-military.If Obama and his wife went to the racist sermons of trinity church for 20 years won't you think that they believe in the feelings and sentiments of these racists,American terrorist Ayers and corrupt businessman Rezco. You can clearly know what the Obama's believe when Michelle stated that America is a mean country and the unpatriotic 'For the first time in my life I am proud to be an American'. Tell how you interpret that.

Breath of fresh air? The air is not that fresh if you have to pinch your nose to breath. Twenty-six years in the Senate and still blindly spousing everything Bush stands for while rejecting your own belief is not that refreshing; using Carl Rove's negative, dishonest, cynical tactics is not at all refreshing. If we really want fresh air, Obama is the OXYGEN TANK.

I am reading the comments and the ignorance of the facts amazes me. Obama is a far far left politician, congress is democrat, but not marxist! McCain will reach across the aisle for genuine PROGRESS. Please people, real Real Clear Politics on the web, it gives an unbiased view of the election with many articles drawn from all across the country. Stop sounding misinformed and just plain stupid. I am a dem voting for McCain and it's Dems like Obama and Pelosi who drove me to that conclusion.

McCain is not a breath of fresh air his is TOXIC and UNSTABLE. Obama is stoic, a breath of FRESH air and stable. He hasn't melted yet under the heat like McCain has. WHAT SOME REPUBLICANS THINK ABOUT MCCAIN'S BEING UNSTABLE: (Some) have outright rejected the idea of a McCain nomination and presidency, warning that his tirades suggest a temperament unfit for the Oval Office.
“The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine,” Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), also a senior member of the Appropriations panel, told the Boston Globe recently. “He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me.”
A former colleague says McCain’s abrasive nature would, at minimum, make his relations with Republicans on Capitol Hill uneasy if he were to become president. McCain could find himself the victim of Republicans who will not go the extra mile for him on legislative issues because of past grievances.
I AGREE!

Tommy, Hillary won't be Obama's VP unless she knows he will be disqualified. Obama has taken illegal campaign contributions and was probably born in Africa instead of Hawaii. His Birth Certificate on his website is FAKE. Even if he was born of a citizen, he is not a NATURAL BORN CITIZEN. The Obama campaign is working furiously to keep this under wraps. Check it out!! The truth will come out and Hillary is not going to hitch her balloon to his wagon unless she gets the nomination from his dimissal. End of Story. McCain '08!!

I loved your article especially when you said "John McCain has sold his soul and embraced policies that he knows are wrong, like the Bush tax cuts, just to gain support from the conservative base. He has courted the endorsements of those he once called "agents of intolerance." His Maverick past only brings his pandering present into sharper relief."
John McCain pull these antics because he is a follower. HE IS NOT A LEADER. He makes his comments based on what Barack Obama says or does. He doesn't make any decisions until Senator Barack Obama makes his decisions. McCain campaign ads and messages are based on what others have said. Again, following not leading. His political antics have been based on the previous Senator Hillary Clinton's actions. Again, following not leading. His policitical decisions are based on going negative on whatever Senator Barack Obama says. Again, following not leading.
McCain may get elected because Obama is over scrutinized and McCain is not scrutinized enough - sounds like a fantastic deal. Four more years of bush antics, though at a slower pace and with less emotion. Our nation is at a crossroads. We have to make a decision at some point to break away from bush or stay the same.
I will never forget as long as I live the negativity that followed Senator Barack Obama's trip abroad. He was being a leader and peacemaker, spreading peace and drawing crowds even Americans abroad. Yet, John McCain and many commentators sowed discord, bitterness and hatred toward him although we also have Americans abroad.
Obama is disrespected when he should be respected and admired. Again, I will never forget America's behavior toward Senator Barack Obama, other countries and fellow Americans when he went abroad.
It is not the number of years in senate; but the fruit.
It is not what you did years ago; but what are you doing today.
Obama has presidential leadership abilities, an organizer, and can draw large crowds. He is more than a speaker. Professionaly, he seeks wise counsel and surrounds himself with people who are experts in their field. These experts helps give Obama constructive information that will help him to make wise decisions to run our country.
I love America. We don't need the same old routine. It is time for a change.
It is ironic when I hear others talking about Obama not being 10 points ahead. With all the negativity, it is surprising that he is where he is in the ratings. Why not ask, "Why isn't John McCain more than 10 points ahead since he is suppose to be the maverick and 'Straight Talk Express'?" McCain is dishonest and a liar. He will do anything to win at any cost.
It is time for a change. This is a new day and we need young blood.
Barack is older that President Clinton when he became President.
I sense a lot of jealousy among the older leaders. Obama is brilliant. His gifts are making room for him.

It's an effective ad, but too bad that "maverick", whom even I admired, no longer exists....not since McSame lodged his head firmly up W's....armpit (thinking of that one photo) regarding the War, his tax cuts for the wealthy, flipping on his own immigration reform legislation, campaign finance, going against embryonic stem cell research and several other policy positions which were also the casualties of his efforts to pander to the GOP's conservative base. And this is not to mention the flipping he's done during this GE campaign like lauding Obama's(Hillary's) 16-month timetable to get out of Iraq, for instance.
Stella.....sorry, but I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.
Kit......he has; he lives with one.
BTW--great photoshopping job, T. Now you've got me singing "Take My Breath Away". Thanks a lot.

With the election less than 90 days away, Obama is still trying to pursuade us that he is a PATRIOT and that he is NOT a NUTCASE. Also that he is not an anti-white, anti-Jewish and anti-religious bigot. His constant gaffes are not helping.

I think this the best ad I have seen by McCain yet. It may piss off the right, but let's face it, the far right is going to vote for McCain over Obama without question. Elections are won with votes from independents and moderates. The middle wants a President who can work with both parties to solve our nation's problems. This ad shows that even Democrats believe McCain is the man for this job. This ad more than any other appeals to this middle. Let me ask one question, could Obama run the same ad with high profile republicans showing equal praise for him.
The answer is why Obama won't be the right choice for the middle and why he will lose the election.

Hate Bush Tactic Doesn't Stick To McCain

Tommy, Tommy, Tommy...You should pick fights that you can win. The tactic of labeling John McCain as "Bush's 3rd Term", is all wet, as demonstrated not only by the comments of these Democratic BigWigs, but even more so by McCain's record of bipartisan compromise. Obama, is at best, a "Celebrated Orator". John McCain is a LEADER. John McCain is a lifelong servant to the people of the United States. Obama serves only himself, and his FAR FAR AWAY LEFT WING ANTI-AMERICA/ANTI-WHITE/ANTI-CHILD/PRO-CRIMINAL/PRO-FREAKSHOW/PRO-ISLAM AGENDA. Your argument that the Hillary Ad is somehow open to interpretation or counter attack is completely devoid of logic, or reality. The statements speak for themselves.
