Update: 8:28 pm - Gwatney's killer has been identified as 50 year-old Timothy Dale Johnson, of Searcy, AR. Update: 5:40 pm - Tragically, the Little Rock Police are reporting that Bill Gwatney, just 48 years old, has died of his wounds. Please keep him and his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.
His assailant was not a former employee, as was originally thought.
Bill Gwatney, chairman of the Arkansas Democratic Party, was shot and critically wounded at the Party Headquarters in Little Rock earlier today. From ABC 13:
They say the incident began when a man entered the party office and asked to speak to the state chairman. Police say the man then fired three shots.
Party chairman Bill Gwatney has been taken to a hospital in critical condition.
The suspect was taken into custody after being shot by police, and has died.
Gwatney, as the state party chair, was a Superdelegate, and had endorsed Hillary Clinton.
Bill and Hillary Clinton have released the following statement:
"We are deeply saddened by the news that Bill Gwatney has passed away. His leadership and commitment to Arkansas and this country have always inspired us and those who had the opportunity to know him. Our prayers are with his family during this time."
Barack Obama has released a statement (via email):
"Michelle and I are heartbroken to hear about the tragic loss of Chairman Bill Gwatney. We're praying for his family and friends and all who worked with him and loved him."
Arkansas Business has more reactions here. Here's some raw video from the scene, shortly after police arrived. It is not graphic, but it shows the police speeding off to chase the suspect, and statements from witnesses.
What a sad ending to this story. When I first wrote this story, I read a lot about Bill Gwatney in order to have a better handle on it. As I did, and as I wrote the story, I naturally hoped and expected that he would recover from his wounds.
The facts surrounding this story are still developing, and the motives of the 51 year old killer will doubtless become more clear. It is the inevitable next stage in stories such as these. Witnesses say that Gwatney shook hands with the man before he took out his gun and fired.
No amount of explanation or analysis will explain what it takes for someone to do something like that. It is the inhuman act of someone who ignores his victim's humanity.
The fact that Gwatney was a political figure will come into play, and if politics turns out to have been on the lips or in the mind of Gwatney's killer, I hope that people scorn the relevance of this man's views.
I also hope that people try to find out more about the man whose life was cut short. Maybe if we all try to share this sense of loss, rather than outrage, we can better appreciate those who remain.
Original Story - 3:40 pm - Bill Gwatney, chairman of the Arkansas Democratic Party, has been shot and critically wounded at the Party Headquarters in Little Rock. From ABC 13:
Police in Little Rock say they've captured a suspect in today's shooting at Arkansas Democratic Party headquarters.
They say the incident began when a man entered the party office and asked to speak to the state chairman. Police say the man then fired three shots.
Party chairman Bill Gwatney has been taken to a hospital in critical condition.
The suspect was taken into custody after being shot by police.
Gwatney, as the state party chair, is a Superdelegate, and has endorsed Hillary Clinton.
Bill and Hillary Clinton released the following statement, via email
"We are stunned and shaken by today's shooting at the Arkansas Democratic Party where our good friend and fellow Democrat Bill Gwatney was critically wounded. Bill is not only a strong chairman of Arkansas' Democratic Party, but he is also a cherished friend and confidante. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bill and his family today and we wish him a quick recovery."
Barack Obama issued this statement (via email):
"I was shocked and saddened to hear about the tragedy in Arkansas. We're all grateful for the quick action of law enforcement and quick thinking by Chairman Gwatney's staff, and Michelle and I are keeping him and his family in our prayers."
We will update this story as it develops.
From The Arkansas Times:
Sources say they are working to confirm tentative information that the suspect, who was critically wounded, was a former employee of a Gwatney car dealership.
Gwatney was taken from the scene in an ambulance and a witness said the wound was serious. Police ... said later that he'd been shot three times in the upper body and was in critical condition. Reports from family members said his condition was grave. At 2 p.m., friends with the Gwatney family at the hospital told friends he was still in surgery.
The report goes on to say that, not long before the shooting, a man with a gun had confronted a building manager a few blocks away, saying he'd lost his job. Gwatney is an executive with a group of Chevrolet dealerships, and there had beemn layoffs at one of them this week.
The shooter's condition is still not known, but described as "critical at best." He was airlifted from the scene of his capture.DNC Chairman Howard Dean issued the following statement:
"This senseless tragedy comes as a shock to all of us. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Chairman Gwatney and his family and we pray for his full and speedy recovery. While the investigation of this shooting continues, and our primary concern remains with Bill and his family, we commend the courageous and speedy action of law enforcement officials in apprehending the suspect."
Re we looking at at trend here? Angry white guys spurred on by bombastic radio assholes? Mentioned in an article on Huffpo. I'll see if I can find it. Is it too early in the day to drink?

bill c, I've been hitting the flame thrower myself lately (not here) but you don't really mean that crap. Let's say murder is murder. It's wrong. It is in the Bible too. Not a Christian myself but their list still works pretty well. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Not sure if that's actually in the Bible but it works for me.

What is wrong with the people on these boards? Who gives a crap if he is a Democrat, Republican, Independent, etc? People don't deserve to be shot based on their political views. This has nothing to do with Obama, the Clintons, abortions, etc. This man was shot today. I am an Arkansan, and currently live in the state. And people wonder why our world is going to hell in a hand basket? Have some consideration for this man and his family. This was not only a shock to Arkansas but the rest of the world. A very very sad time we live in...

Tommy -
Maybe I misunderstood you, but I don't think the shooters political views are relevant. Maybe they would have played a part in his choice of victim, but this lost mind was looking for someone to kill and would have killed even if he had no views at all.
No matter what the shooters political, social or economic background, he was a crazed lunatic. Only someone with loose screws would do anything like this.

At this point, until more information is available, I agree with you, Tommy, that we must look at the possibility that the man's political views may have been related to the shooting. I am not clear on where the shooter was employed and was his place of employment in any way affiliated with the business of the deceased?
This is indeed a shock and a shame, no matter what the situation behind it is and my prayers go out to the family and friends of the victim and to all who have been affected by it.
Thanks for an accurate report with updates.

Splash, my point is that tensions are high and that the level of bellicose(love that word) hatred that spews from the AM radio and fox news, along with websites that go even further may contribute to incidents of violence. The crazies (a medical term) are the most vulnerable to the message. You'd think we were in a civil war listening to these guys.

Yeah, I don't buy it. Let's just say we banned AM radio, fox news and the web sites you reference. The "crazies" would still find a reason to kill; it is the kill screw that is loose. The hatred you say spews from AM radio spews more from Air America.
And we ARE in a civil war, but the operative word is "civil". If there was no talk radio, fox news or the blogosphere, there would be no debate at all, civil or otherwise. It takes two to tango. It may be mean spirited and may even from time to time cross the line, but violence is not a part of it; to even insinuate that it is, is in and of itself a form of blind rage.
Of course we still don't know the nature of the shooter, if he listened to Rush or Rhodes, watched fox or CNN and, for all we know, he is a disgruntled H-bot. But no matter what he listens to/watches or believes, there was no civility in what this nut did. There are plenty of groups that espouse violence (Farrakan, Radical Islam, White Supremacy, etc) and maybe that is more of what you meant.
Then again ... maybe not.

These are indeed perilous times. The killer may have had a reason, but there are no good reasons for doing this! Those of you who want to silence opposing points of view because you suspect they are the cause of this insanity are dangerously close to advocating the destruction of the liberty of this Republic. Let us all pray for the victim of this irrational act of violence and the family and friends he leaves to mourn him.

The gullable are sold the message on a 24/7 schedule, mostly on AM radio that Democrats and Librals are evil. Many of the gullible own firearms, and one of them bought the message. In the early 90's Rush, Hannity, and the like preached the evils of big government 24/7. Tim McVeigh bought and acted on that message.

The Democratic National Committee also issued a statement Wednesday that identified Gwatney.
"This senseless tragedy comes as a shock to all of us," Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said in a written statement. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Chairman Gwatney and his family and we pray for his full and speedy recovery."
OMG Obama is allowing Coward Dean to speak for the DNC. Is he losing control over him. Last I heard he had sent Dean on a bus ride soliciting Obama votes from homeless people and dead guys.

Did you know that the shooter was a democrate???????? Everyone jumps to the conclusion that it must have been a republican that did the killing............... He was a democrate. Most likely, he killed that Super delegate because Hillary will probably have a role call and since that Super delegate was a Hillary supporter, he was going to vote for her at the convention. The democratic party is divided among themselves one side is democrates and the other side is Obama supporters. That shooter was most likely an Obama supporter. They will do anything to get this man elected; voter fraud, lying, stealing and now murder. What has this election year done to the minds of the democrates???????????
