In the 2nd straight upset of this kind, I'm going to have to declare John McCain the winner of the pop song derby. Longtime PM readers might recall Mitt Romney's surprise victory in the TV Guide Primary a few months back.
It was a close battle, and I encourage you to cast your own vote for who has the best list. Here's my take on the candidates' picks, and why I give the edge to McCain.
Hat tip to Diana for putting these players together.
Let me start with Barack Obama's list. My overall problem: Too cool for school. I think his list is a little too calculated. For example, everybody knows that "Let's Get it On" is the best Marvin Gaye song ever, but Obama makes the "relevant" choice, "What's Goin' on?" (Actually, taken together, the two song titles form the basis for an amusing comedy skit.)
Throughout Barack's list, he takes a well-known artist, and deliberately eschews the more popular, obvious selection. This is exactly the strategy I would employ at a party if I was trying to score points with the cool girl in the glasses. I would have gone with a few "b-sides,"one mash-up, and at least one live record. Plus, you've got to invoke this phrase at least once: "...but only on vinyl, of course."
I give him points for his 10th selection, "Yes, We Can," a song made up of snippets of his own speeches. It shows a willingness to poke fun at himself. That, and it conjures the amusing prospect of a song made up of bits from McCain speeches.
McCain, on the other hand, gets major points from me for honesty. Any guy that can cop to not one, but two ABBA songs in his top 10 is OK in my book. That's pretty much what carried the day for McCain. As a fellow ABBA guilty-pleasurer, I am forced to surmise that McCain, like me, also takes every spare moment alone that he can to chair-dance to "Lip Gloss."
Perhaps I'm reading too much into this, but is his #8 choice, "I've Got You Under My Skin," an attempt at gallows humor by the GOP nominee? McCain is known to have an odd, dark sense of humor.
Also, I think the combination of nos. 4 and 7 form a sort of "musical prayer" for McCain's electoral fortunes. "If We Make it Through December," "What a Wonderful World."
His #6 pick, "Good Vibrations," might have been a cop-out to avoid evoking his "Bomb, bomb Iran" joke, or it could have been a warning to convention protesters about the now-legendary "Poo Cannon." Warning the protesters would also explain his #10 pick, "The Smoke Gets in Your Eyes."
Although I like more of the songs on Obama's list, I thought he played it way too safe. McCain, on the other hand, gave up a very fun list, and shows decent taste in music. You can say that he benefitted from lowered expectations, but hey, that's politics.
The name of Obama's song should be..I'M JUST BLOWING SMOKE UP YOUR A*S -- YOU VOTING HOUND DOG'S...
AND ON THE FLIP SIDE..
WHAT I WON'T SAY TO GET YOUR VOTE -- BUT WHEN I DO I'LL TURN ON YOU..
THE OBAMA HIT SONGS..

T.C. I like your blogs but when it comes to music you must be challanged. Taking Merle over Marvin Gaye? ABBA over "The Boss"? Beach Boys over Aretha? No cool factor there. At least McCain gives a nod to Frank and Louie but here the clear winner is Obama.

This is the song he should be thinking about before he makes his VP selection.
I am woman, hear me roar In numbers too big to ignore And I know too much to go back an' pretend 'cause I've heard it all before And I've been down there on the floor No one's ever gonna keep me down again
Oh yes I am wise But it's wisdom born of pain Yes, I've paid the price But look how much I gained If I have to, I can do anything I am strong (strong) I am invincible (invincible) I am woman
You can bend but never break me 'cause it only serves to make me More determined to achieve my final goal And I come back even stronger Not a novice any longer 'cause you've deepened the conviction in my soul
I am woman watch me grow See me standing toe to toe As I spread my lovin' arms across the land But I'm still an embryo With a long long way to go Until I make my brother understand
Oh yes I am wise But it's wisdom born of pain Yes, I've paid the price But look how much I gained If I have to I can face anything I am strong (strong) I am invincible (invincible) I am woman Oh, I am woman I am invincible I am strong
I am woman I am invincible I am strong I am woman

On Monday, Justin Paulette knocked points off McCain's score in the music category of his Pop Culture story because McCain likes Abba. Now, you give him a win mostly because he has two Abba songs on his list. Who says AOLPM isn't fair and balanced and willing to give time to bloggers from both sides of the aisle?
Abba is good but it was Roy Orbison and The Platters that got my vote. They were popular when I was still young enough to be cool. Thanks for the fun story.

TC- ok, I'll break it down- "Dancing QUeen" (1977) is Obama Girl's prom night scene from 1975; "Take A Chance On Me" (1977) is Obama girl selling her image to American industry; "Good Vibrations" phantom(1966) is McCain's arch enemy, the one who conspired with the North Vietnamese to have him imprisoned in 1967; the phantom enemy pops was celebrating his engagement to be married; "What's Goin' On" (1971) is sister Moe D., Harry & Me out on location of the first annual Earth Day ceremony, April 20, 1970; "Gimme Shelter" (1969) gives story of Moe D telling McCain archenemy that he is being stalked, conspired onto and spied on by his next door neighbors in Chatsworth, CA, before their identity went national aka "The Manson Family;" "Think" (1969) gives the story of Moe D tired of people selling her image to American industry and the corny games they play while doing so; hope that helps

TC- here's your final classic for the day; on "Let The Rhythm Hit 'Em," by "B," you have Miss Dru Hill sent a little 1991 presidential message and it went like this- "you'll get wrecked by the 'architect' so respect him, while disconnect him, soon as I inject him, with radiation, put em in the basement, bust his chest open bash his face in, let it split em, since he brought his main man with em, you ask me how i did em? I let the rhythm hit em- hope that vast RW conspiracy song helps

That was fun! My vote went to Barack on this one, (as it will in November. LOL). You have to give them both points for having an ecclectic mix, although I agree with Steve Seivers that Barack's is definitely the cooler of the two (but come on, Bruce has no many better songs than that!). He did sort of wimp out, though, didn't he? And why not "Pride (In the Name of Love)" by U2 - too much of a political statement? "CofBL" is another great song of theirs, though. And one of Sweetie's favorite karaoke songs, "Let's Get it On" would have been too risky (but is the better of the two). Also, it's funny how I'm kind of softening to the "Yes, We Can" song which used to make me bristle. Hey, the dude from Live was in it, so it can't be that bad. Love them.
The most glaring thing about McCain's selections are, of course, how dated they are - I think the newest song was ABBA's from circa 1975. I will also stand up and admit that I dig ABBA and that Muriel's Wedding is one of my fave movies (soundtrack almost the same as Mama Mia's). "Fernando" happens to be my favorite song of theirs, for deeply personal reasons (descansa en paz). GV is also my fave BB song and I also hate to admit that I like some Neil Diamond songs, as well (being a rocker & all). Cannot go wrong with Ole Blue Eyes, with Bono adding a special accompaniment here.
BTW--Jo and Wish.....my video selection of "Take a Chance on Me" was my tribute to you and your candidate-of-choice. LMAO! Couldn't resist just a little slam, you know.

Boy, McC is kickin' butt here. Geesh....some people need to lighten up a bit. Nothing wrong with the occasional fluff piece as a pleasant diversion.
Hello, Peggy!
hst.....well done. I can see that you also have diverse musical taste. Did you see how I slipped in the "Lip Gloss" (track #10 of 11 on McCain's playlist)by L'il Mama? Or Ron Paul into video #3?
Becky....thanks a lot. Now I'll be humming that old Helen Reddy tune for the rest of the night. Ugh. Coincidentally, I used to tell TC that it should be the PUMA theme song. Sorry, but no woman other than Hillary for VP (and that ship has sailed). Joe Biden for VP!

Well done Diana!
I loved it. Even though I had to listen to ABBA to watch it. As a life long student of music, I am more than a bit disturbed by the candidates choices. But I became sold on McCain the other day when I found out that one of his favorite television shows is "Dexter" (the sarcastic serial killer who only kills other serial killers). It's my favorite too. That's really all I needed to know. It was pointless of me to have wasted a year of my life focusing on the issues. I can be totally comfortable voting for him now.
P.S. Biden's a good VP choice. I always liked him. I bet he likes Clapton. But McCain's my man, as I clearly just stated. That's who I'm going with, there's no talking me out of this...

TC- here's an update- the song "Yes We Can Can" (1973) by the Pointer Sisters tells the story of Moe D giving a speech about "change" in secular America which consisted of telling the truth, once the draft was outlawed and strangelove was released; the song "Yes, I'm Ready" (1966) by Barbara Mason tells the story of 14 year old Moe D finding herself in the position of ruling the secular universe following the opening of the Church of Satan, and how she needed help from her boyfriend in ridding the evil satanic theme from the secular world; the song "No Fourteen" (1966) by Love Featuring Arthur Lee tells the story of Joe the 13 month old Benjamin's baby who broke a looking glass, and how important it was to use his spirit to promote a nationwide grass roots effort to stop the spread of superstitious evil, while promoting hope, change and equality hope that helps
