Ridge: We Won't Question Obama's Patriotism

Tom Ridge - one of the top contenders for the No. 2 spot on John McCain's White House ticket - today vowed that the GOP would not bash Barack Obama on his patriotism, but said the Democrat needed to be clear on what exactly, patriotism-bashing is.

"We're challenging his experience, we're challenging his judgment, we're going to challenge his equivocation on some of the critical issues. We never, we haven't and we won't challenge his patriotism," Ridge said of himself, the McCain campaign, and Republican Party in general.

The statement to CNN's Wolf Blitzer this afternoon came after a speech by Obama at a VFW convention in Florida one day after McCain spoke. Obama said:

"Instead of just offering policy answers, he [McCain] turned to a typical laundry list of political attacks. He said that I have changed my position on Iraq when I have not. He said that I am for a path of 'retreat and failure.' And he declared, 'Behind all of these claims and positions by Senator Obama lies the ambition to be president' – suggesting, as he has so many times, that I put personal ambition before my country."

"...If we think that we can use the same partisan playbook where we just challenge our opponent's patriotism to win an election, then the American people will lose."

Later, he says:

"Oone of the things that we have to change in this country is the idea that people can't disagree without challenging each other's character and patriotism. I have never suggested that Senator McCain picks his positions on national security based on politics or personal ambition. I have not suggested it because I believe that he genuinely wants to serve America's national interest. Now, it's time for him to acknowledge that I want to do the same. Let me be clear: I will let no one question my love of this country. I love America, so do you, and so does John McCain."

McCain, by the way, never uttered the word "patriot" or "patriotism" in regards to Obama during his prepared remarks to the VFW group.

He did, however, say things like:

-"Obama still cannot quite bring himself to admit his own failure in judgment [on Iraq]"
-"Senator Obama commits the greater error of insisting that even in hindsight, he would oppose the surge. Even in retrospect, he would choose the path of retreat and failure for America over the path of success and victory."
-"Behind all of these claims and positions by Senator Obama lies the ambition to be president. What's less apparent is the judgment to be commander in chief. And in matters of national security, good judgment will be at a premium in the term of the next president."

A Gallup poll released today shows that registered voters who have served in the U.S. military solidly back McCain over Obama, 56% to 34%.

"Unlike Barack Obama, John McCain doesn't have to compensate for a lack of credibility on the international stage with inflammatory and public threats against American allies," said McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds.

Ridge said he "absolutely" thinks Obama is patriotic, but he needs to make his decisions based on experience, not polls.

What Obama needs to understand, the former homeland security secretary said, is that taking swipes at your political opponent on issues like energy policy, the Iraq war, and others, is all part of the game - and you're playing with the big boys now.

"We do have differences in this election but one of the things we have to change in this country is the idea that people can't disagree without challenging each other's character or their patriotism," Ridge said. "The idea that Senator McCain of all people would challenge anybody else's patriotism is simply a straw man he [Obama] had to put up in front of that group at VFW and then knock it down."
