In Washington, it’s a showdown between the representatives of Wall Street and the representatives of Main Street. But have you noticed that the old partisan alliances are reversed? It’s the Democrats who are now the Wall Street Party. And Republicans—with the conspicuous exception of President Bush—are now the Main Street Party.

Consider: President Bush proposed the $700 billion plan; after days of hiding behind the Secretary of Goldman Sachs, Henry Paulson, Bush finally emerged from the sidelines Wednesday night to tout the plan in prime time. Just this morning, he spoke again in favor of his plan, while again taking no questions from pesky reporters.

But the Congressional Democrats, who mostly despise Bush, are also mostly for the Bush plan. Sure, they made some cosmetic changes in the bailout proposal, but they have never wavered in their basic endorsement.

So who’s against the plan? It’s McCain and Congressional Republicans who are getting in the way. They are the heroes of the hour. Although outnumbered, these brave Capitol Hill GOPers have stopped official Washington in its tracks.

...and Obama...like his 130 plus "present" votes...and I quote "Call me if you need me."

It would have been nice if he had remembered the name on the braclet without looking. Also after being told not to use it, now it's okay to use it. Seems rather awkard to me.

I disagree, foreo4, by looking at the name on the bracelet before saying it, Obama alluded to the THOUSANDS of troops who have lost their lives in this (adjectives removed by author) war.

Obama did a far better job during the first debate. McCain's selection of Palin clearly has made me decide to vote for Obama. McCain’s decision making is awful. First he selects a know nothing woman just to try to appeal to the Republican base and to try to get women to vote for him. That idea has certainly failed. Second, he claims he would suspend his campaign to go to Washington claiming that he would not participate in the debate and would stay until the bailout bill was completed. Of course, we know how that lie worked out. McCain's presence in Washington only managed to delay the agreement as both Democrats and Republicans seem to agree. In my mind it’s his decision making that makes him unfit for being President. Last night he never mentioned anything about what he would do for working and middle class Americans. That was enough for me. We must not make the horrible mistake of putting Palin and McCain in the White House. Palin does not know enough to be a heartbeat away from becoming President. During last night's debate you heard Obama say on a few occasions that McCain was right on some issues. You need to listen to the issues that he agreed with. To me this shows just how presidential Obama is. He is the one who will reach across to the right to work collaboratively with Republicans. John McCain never once said that Obama was right on any issues. Now who do you believe would work with both Democrats and Republicans, certainly not John McCain? Please America, you must vote for Obama-Biden. Together, their experiences far outweigh the combined experience and knowledge of McCain-Palin.

It might have been awkward, but it was true!

Did any tell Tracy Jopek that Senator Obama used the bracelet and his name when he gave his speech on Memorial Day. There was no Sen McCain there to use the bracelet for a counter-point. If she said she asked him not to use it campaigning or giving speeches, how does she reconcile THAT?

I am so tired of c McCain saying how he has more experience than Obama for the president position, ok he was in the service and was captured but when was he captured and during the time how much experience could he have gotten.  Also if anyone can tell me how much experience each new president has when it's his first time bieng president?  Each one comes into that position with NO experience at all.  And some come out like they went in with not a clue as to what to do with or abot the problems of this country as the day they first went in, because the only thing they did was like bush make the world and more so the USA a much worse plase than it was when they took office.  bush said he would show everyone how a commander and cheif should be well if he's the example then give me the private every time, all bush has done for this country is to truly show people what we DO NOT WANT A COMMANDER AND CHIEF TO DO OR BE.

Barack Obama played the “me too” game during the Friday debates on September 26 after Senator John McCain mentioned that he was wearing a bracelet with the name of Cpl. Matthew Stanley, a resident of New Hampshire and a soldier that lost his life in Iraq in 2006. Obama said that he too had a bracelet. After fumbling and straining to remember the name, he revealed that his had the name of Sergeant Ryan David Jopek of Merrill, Wisconsin.

Shockingly, however, Madison resident Brian Jopek, the father of Ryan Jopek, the young soldier who tragically lost his life to a roadside bomb in 2006, recently said on a Wisconsin Public Radio show that his family had asked Barack Obama to stop wearing the bracelet with his son’s name on it. Yet Obama continues to do so despite the wishes of the family.

Radio host Glenn Moberg of the show “Route 51″ asked Mr. Jopek, a man who believes in the efforts in Iraq and is not in favor of Obama’s positions on the war, what he and his ex-wife think of Obama continually using their son’s name on the campaign trail. Jopek began by saying that his ex-wife was taken aback, even upset, that Obama has made the death of her son a campaign issue. Jopek says his wife gave Obama the bracelet because “she just wanted Mr. Obama to know Ryan’s name.” Jopek went on to say that “she wasn’t looking to turn it into a big media event” and “just wanted it to be something between Barack Obama and herself.” Apparently, they were all shocked it became such a big deal.

But, he also said that his ex-wife has refused further interviews on the matter and that she wanted Obama to stop wearing the reminder of her son’s sacrifice that he keeps turning into a campaign soundbyte. This begins at about 10 minutes into the radio program.

In a move that cou ld help increase home ownership rates among minorities and low-income consumers, the Fannie Mae Corporation is easing the credit requirements on loans that it will purchase from banks and other lenders.
The action, which will begin as a pilot program involving 24 banks in 15 markets -- including the New York metropolitan region -- will encourage those banks to extend home mortgages to individuals whose credit is generally not good enough to qualify for conventional loans. Fannie Mae officials say they hope to make it a nationwide program by next spring.
Fannie Mae, the nation's biggest underwriter of home mortgages, has been under increasing pressure from the Clinton Administration to expand mortgage loans among low and moderate income people and felt pressure from stock holders to maintain its phenomenal growth in profits.
In addition, banks, thrift institutions and mortgage companies have been pressing Fannie Mae to help them make more loans to so-called subprime borrowers. These borrowers whose incomes, credit ratings and savings are not good enough to qualify for conventional loans, can only get loans from finance companies that charge much higher interest rates -- anywhere from three to four percentage points higher than co nventional loans.
''Fannie Mae has expanded home ownership for millions of families in the 1990's by reducing down payment requirements,'' said Franklin D. Raines, Fannie Mae's chairman and chief executive officer. ''Yet there remain too many=2 0borrowers whose credit is just a notch below what our underwriting has required who have been relegated to paying significantly higher mortgage rates in the so-called subprime market.''
Demographic information on these borrowers is sketchy. But at least one study indicates that 18 percent of the loans in the subprime market went to black borrowers, compared to 5 per cent of loans in the conventional loan market.
In moving, even tentatively, into this new area of lending, Fannie Mae is taking on significantly more risk, which may not pose any difficulties during flush economic times. But the government-subsidized corporation may run into trouble in an economic downturn, prompting a government rescue similar to that of the savings and loan industry in the 1980's.
''From the perspective of many people, including me, this is another thrift industry growing up around us,'' said Peter Wallison a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. ''If they fail, the government will have to step up and bail them out the way it stepped up and bailed out the thrift industry.''
Under Fannie Mae's pilot program, consumers who qualify can secure a mortgage with an interest rate one percentage point above that of=2 0a conventional, 30-year fixed rate mortgage of less than $240,000 -- a rate that currently averages about 7.76 per cent. If the borrower makes his or her monthly payments on time for two years, the one percentage point premium is dropped.

Fannie Mae, the nation's biggest underwriter of home mortgages, does not lend money directly to consumers. Instead, it purchases loans that banks make on what is called the secondary market. By expanding the type of loans that it will buy, Fannie Mae is hoping to spur banks to make more loans to people with less-than-stellar credit ratings.
Fannie Mae officials stress that the new mortgages will be extended to all potential borrowers who can qualify for a mortgage. But they add that the move is intended in part to increase the number of minority and low income home owners who tend to have worse credit ratings than non-Hispanic whites.
Home ownership has, in fact, exploded among minorities during the economic boom of the 1990's. The number of mortgages extended to Hispanic applicants jumped by 87.2 per cent from 1993 to 1998, according to Harvard University's Joint Center for Housing Studies. During that same period the number of African Americans who got mortgages to buy a home increased by 71.9 per cent and the number of Asian Americans by 46.3 per cent.
