Brave New Films has released a short film that really goes to the heart of the problem with John McCain: People don't actually know his positions on a lot of issues. If they did, it might not make a difference, but then again, it might. I'm a firm believer that people deserve to know what they're getting.
In this case, the issue is abortion rights, and according to the film, 73% of women in battleground states don't know his true position. I have witnessed this phenomenon personally. I've written about this over and over again.
John McCain is anti-choice. Period. In fact, he is the first GOP nominee to actually promise to appoint judges who will overturn Roe v Waderight on his website. How can it be that so many people don't know this?
Part of it is the overpowering musk of McCain's "Maverick" narrative, which gives people the impression that all of McCain's positions are going to be swimming upstream.
Another reason for the confusion is that the campaign has muddied the water, too. In an attempt to court Hillary Clinton supporters, the campaign downplayed its opposition to Roe, parsing its words to within an inch of their lives.
So, here's the real deal, courtesy of Brave New Films. Pass it on.

It's really a shame that this is all the Dems got.
If Roe v. Wade is overturned, abortion would not be a guaranteed legal right. It would probably revert to the individual states to decide if they want it legal or not. Some would, some would not. I would say that's a very "maverick" position, allowing states the right to decide.
It's not 1973, women's lives are not ruined if they have a child out of wedlock. People are desperate to adopt. Birth control is cheap and easy.
While I disagree with McCain and Palin on rape/incest, you have to understand they are looking at it from the viewpoint that it is not the fetus' fault how it was conceived. Why does "it" not have a chance at a life?
I wonder if Barack Obama's 18 year old Mother considered an abortion? She must have known by that time that the prospects of any future with the African sperm donor were slim. She must have known what a hardship having that child would be. I bet she thought seriously about it.
Could any of those aborted fetuses have been another Einstein? Who knows what has been dumped in the dumpster.
It's just so tired and false to argue abortion as if it was 30 something years ago. If this is the issue that keeps these pathetic "womyn" or whatever they are supporting Barack Obama, it's just sad and stupid. Get some Yaz, get in a good mood, clear up your skin, and shut up.

I believe that Palin is a breath of fresh air. All politions sound the same, however, Palin made me feel comfortable, she is down to earth and competent. Yes she has a lot to learn, but so does Obama, and he's running for president, she's running for vp.

Roe v. Wade being overturned would not mean that abortion would be illegal. It would mean that abortion would be something the states would decide. Therefore being put back on the side of the people. I think there are alot of people in this country who would not agree with their tax dollars going to support planned parenthood and thier complete disrespect for life and for women. I don't think there are mnay woman out there who count abortion as the one RIGHT they are glad they have. Even the woman behind Roe v. Wade regrets bringing that case to the court in the first place. Your blog is based out of ignorance. Mccain wants to appoint judges who have a strong commitment to follow the consitution. Roe V. Wade was a bad law from the beginning and having it overturned would not be the end of woman's rights. Do some research and see what that law is really about.

Well put. Just because the economy is trumping all other issues currently, the pro-life community is salivating at the prospect of a McCain presidency to further stack the court with conservatives. And keep in mind the next president will select at least one - or more - Supreme Court justices. John Paul Stevens is 88, Ruth Bader Ginsberg is 75, and they are supporters of Roe v. Wade. The current court of Alito and Roberts has decidedly moved the court to the right. South Dakota has a ballot initiative in November to allow abortions only in the case of rape, incest, and the life of the mother in that state. I am not sure how that can play out with Roe v. Wade still the law of the land. For supporters of Roe v. Wade who think it is etched in stone, think again.

John McCain says he is a Maverick. He has also said he is like Berry Goldwater. That is the biggest lie he has ever told. He would make a good pimple on Barry's bottom. Berry Goldwater was respected by both his friend and his oponents, and if he were alive today and he heard John McCain words, he would probably punch his lights out.

Obama/Biden want the US to remain hostage to the MidEast oil cartels and from other unfriendly energy suppliers outside our borders. They will use the environmental issue, true and otherwise, as their excuse for not acquiscing to patriotism and the need to bring all of our energy home. Instead, they are apparently happy to see the new oil fields in the upper Midwest of the US and our Alaskan oil to be shipped overseas, while we send 70% of our energy money overseas to finance terrorism against us and the rest of a war weary world. McCain/Palin, on the other hand, see the very Conspiracy behind the current energy scheme. They know that most of the MidEast problems would evaporate almost overnight it their instigators did not enjoy the continual infusion of US energy dollars to support them. They know we have proven oil fields of easy-to-refine gas and oil in Montana and the Dakotas larger than all of Saudi Arabia's and Iran's fields combined, They know that by injecting up to $2 trillion into the US economy by keeping that money at home this nation would end its economic woes in a matter of a year or two, and see growth and opportunity far exceeding anything a demagogic Democratic Party could ever promise. Vote for energy independence. Vote for economic revival. Vote for a safer homeland and a safer world. Vote for life. Vote to keep "In God we Trust" as our motto. "Because abortion undeniably involves a degree of physical and emotional pain, the abortion decision cannot be viewed apart from the factors that motivate it. Those factors-personal problems, social pressure, lack of support from family, society, or friends--suggest that the choice is never a truly voluntary one. It is more likely in fact that women submit to abortions, not so much because they have a choice, but because they feel that in their own circumstances, they have no choice at all.... Abortion does nothing whatever to promote social and economic justice, nor does it compensate for the lack of it." --Elizabeth Moore Sobo
Women deserve something better than abortion. Prevention first...Better options...More choices

McCain and Palin don't want women to use contraceptives or birth control -- they are also against birth control pills, IUDs, even the "morning after pill" for girls who have been raped.
Overturning Roe v Wade is just the first step for the Social Conservatives. Their overall goal is to keep women from controlling their own fertility. Because when women can't control their fertility, they also can't control their educations, their jobs, their finances -- and they have to remain submissive to the men in their families. Wake up and smell the coffee.

First off, Tommy, abortion is a 70's issue. I don't know why we are still taking about it! Women have never had more choices for birth control, patches, pills, internal, external, long term, short term. There are morning after pills! Any and all of these are very easy to obtain! It is highly doubtful that Roe v. Wade will be overturned. The major issue is third term abortions, when a baby is viable outside of the womb. Even the most liberal politicans are against them, except Barack Obama. He has voted 4 times to allow third trimester abortions. This is a radical position and is wrong! Just before a vote, a Chicago nurse, told the story of an infant that lived through a botched abortion. She asked the doctor what she should do with the baby, and was told to put him in a medical waste closet. She couldn't do it. She held that baby for 45 minutes, kept him warm, and rocked him until he died. She went before the Senate to tell her story. Grown men choked up, not Barack. He sat there emotionless and voted in favor of 3rd tri. abortions yet again! This speaks volumes on how little value he puts on life! At this point, it is no longer abortion, it's infanticide.

THE LEADER OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH ALONG WITH ALL THE CLERGY AND CHRISTIAN CHURCHES ARE AGAINST ABORTION. ABORTION IS MURDER AND THE BIBLE SAYS THOU SHALT NOT KILL. NO MATTER WHAT WAY YOU TRY TO DEFEND YOUR VIEWS THE BOTTOM LINE IS IT IS WRONG.
I FOR ONE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE DETAILS OF OBAMA'S TIES TO AYERS AND RESKO. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO KNOW WHY OBAMA WENT TO PAKISTAN WHEN IT WAS OFF LIMITS TO AMERICANS. OBAMA WAS A STUDENT AND MOST STUDENTS GO TO EUROPE DURING SUMMER BREAK. SO WHY PAKISTAN??? THIS IS AMERICA AND AMERICANS HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW BEFORE THEY GO TO THE POLLS AND VOTE.
AMERICANS WANT THE TRUTH AND NOT SOME EVASIVE ANSWER.
