The McCain campaign, on the heels of Sarah Palin's "Joe McCarthy" tour on Saturday, has released a new ad that brings the GOP candidate's last ditch strategy into full relief: The Boogieman. The new ad is called "Dangerous," and it is as dishonest as the rest of McCain's ads.
ANNCR: Who is Barack Obama? He says our troops in Afghanistan areWith Obama opening, and maintaining, a significant lead in the polls (50%-43% in today's Gallup daily) on the strength of his debate performance and McCain's bad gamble on the economic crisis, the McCain campaign is headed for the peak of desperation mountain.
BARACK OBAMA: "... just air-raiding villages and killing civilians."
ANNCR: How dishonorable. Congressional liberals voted repeatedly to cut off funding to our active troops. Increasing the risk on their lives. How dangerous. Obama and Congressional liberals. Too risky for America.
JOHN MCCAIN: I'm John McCain and I approved this message.
This ad relies on attacks that were debunked by FactCheck following the VP debate. The funding bill that the ad refers to was one that didn't include timelines for withdrawal. Obama, along with Hillary Clinton and conservative Republican Tom Coburn, voted against the measure. At the time, 32% of Americans thought we were making progress in Iraq, and 56% favored timetables. That number is at 59% today.
As far as the out-of-context quote about Afghanistan, the point Obama was trying to make was that we needed more troops in Afghanistan, a position McCain has lately adopted. From WaPo:
"We've got to get the job done there and that requires us to have enough troops so that we're not just air-raiding villages and killing civilians, which is causing enormous problems there,"The Afghani government has complained about the level of civilians killed by US forces, which exceeds those killed by insurgents. So, McCain is in favor of killing civilians?
The politics of fear worked out pretty well for George W. Bush in 2004. The next round of McCain scare tactics are sure to be worse than this, so we'll get to see if Americans have wised up to this game yet.
