NY Post Smears Michelle Obama With Caviar

This is not, as you might think, a response to the VP-inspired porn flick "Who's Nailin' Palin," but, rather, a different kind of sleaze: tabloid "journalism." The New York Post ran a story last week stating that Michelle Obama, while staying at the Waldorf-Astoria, called room service and ordered lobster hors d'oeuvres, two whole steamed lobsters, Iranian caviar and champagne.

The Post ran this retraction yesterday:
THE source who told us last week about Michelle Obama getting lobster and caviar delivered to her room at the Waldorf-Astoria must have been under the influence of a mind-altering drug. She was not even staying at the Waldorf. We regret the mistake, and our former source is going to regret it, too. Bread and water would be too good for such disinformation.
Regret what mistake? Publishing a daily newspaper? Quitting your jobs proofreading for Juggs magazine?

Keith Olbermann dubbed Page Six one of his "Worst Persons" last night, but I think he's being too hard on them. This retraction makes a nice bookend to the stories of Cindy McCain's $300,000.00 outfit, Sarah Palin's fake, slumming shopping trip to Wal Mart, and her real $150,000.00 spree (on the RNC's dime) at the most elite department stores in the country.

As for the Post, I think having to eat their words is punishment enough. There isn't a champagne in the world that can make that go down easy.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
