Senator John Kerry told a joke last week that caused a bit of an uproar. He said that when the candidates were asked whether they wore boxers or briefs, McCain's reply was, "Depends."
Here's Fox News' analysis of the joke.
Surprisingly, I've got to agree with Greta on this one, at least to some degree. I'm not sure where Kerry's and McCain's war records factor in, but the fact is, Kerry is a colleague of McCain's. Context matters here.
For example, and in the interest of full disclosure, I've actually made the same joke on these very pages. Ironically, I did it to illustrate the same point that Greta was making. There is a difference between a humorist making a crack about a politician, and a U.S. Senator making a sexually inappropriate, homophobic remark about a colleague, or a colleague's 18 year-old daughter.
McCain was wrong to make a joke about Chelsea Clinton being ugly, and Janet Reno being a man. John Kerry is just as wrong for making the joke about McCain wearing adult diapers.
McCain, to his credit, apologized to President Clinton for his transgression. Kerry should do the same. Furthermore, as Jon Stewart points out here, he should be prevented from ever joking again.

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around.
