Ben Affleck's Keith Olbermann

First off, I am an avowed Democrat. Having said that, I have to admit that Affleck's Olbermann was absolutely hysterical! He hit it right on the head, especially the turning to various cameras, I thought that was the funniest part!

SNL will have a good time with Cheney endorsing McCain. Maybe Cheney will have a stake in his hand when he is endorsing McCain, while McCain is laying down shaking in fear waiting for the stake to be plunged into his heart.

I think Olbermann has destroyed his career with his coverage of this campaign. Walter Cronkite must be turning in his grave at the thought of Keith ever being allowed in front of a camera again. Maybe he can cover local dog shows. Ben did a good job, it was funny, but it in no way makes up for Tina Fey's portrayal of Sarah Palin. I would love to see SNL do a skit where Obama is in a meeting with all his closest friends--Reverend Wright, Ayers, Rezko, Farrakan, you know, the usual crew he gets together with on Saturday nights for poker. Now that would be entertaining.

Caleb....I agree with your assessment of Affleck's impersonation. It was brilliant! I was just surprised that he would take a shot against such an icon of the left, being the staunch Dem & political activist that he is. He comes to mind as being the most politically-astute actor that I can think of (great when guesting on Bill Maher, may himself run for office someday?). Just picture me LMAO sitting right next to Tommy, who has an annoyed look on his face (but really fighting back laughter).

Glad to see so many people despise Olbermann. MSNBC and CNN have driven me to Fox News and Fox is a little too far to the right for me but at least they try to be fair some of the time. Cant anyone do Objective news anymore. Most people dont hate MCCain or hate Obama they just want objective facts so they can vote not some asshole's slant like Olbermann

I'm sorry, I disagree with your comment about Olbermann, while I think it is perfectly fine and funny to make fun of him. Yes, he is over the top in his delivery, but he has been spot on about so many things and had the courage to speak to them when most people were silent.

I'd take Olbermann over any of the FOX news clan any day.

Also, you state that liberals don't have a sense of humor as you site perhaps the only 'Republican' comedy out there...ever. As the right always states,
"Hollywood is liberal" so don't try to claim 'humor'.

The liberal hollywood just wants to cash in now on all the Republicans who are feeling like crap and needing a pick me up. Its a 'win-win' situation for hollywood and the liberals. Guess that means there will be a lot more comedy for right-wingers in the years to come, because you'll need it as it will be your only outlet and voice.

REALITY CHECK

Thinking back to the old USSR (Soviet Union), and more recently to pre-Capitalist China, who were the only people who lived in opulence and drove (or more accurately, were chauffeured in) large automobiles?

As I recall, they were high-placed government officials. Somehow, the political and economic system which has as its central theme “spreading the wealth around” forgot to tell government leaders.

It comes down to this, Senator Obama thinks Americans should not be “selfish.” We should be happy to “Spread the Wealth Around”, so long as it’s not Senator Obama’s wealth! It’s a great concept in the abstract, not so good when it applies to HIM!

After the Cheney endorsment McCain will go into the jewelry business with Cindy while Sarah goes to jail.

Results will be 52% Obama, 38.5% McCain, 6% Ron Paul, 2% Nader, 1% Barr, .5%McKinney.

One note to JD re: Walter Cronkite turning over in his grave. He's very much alive and still contributng commentary on NPR.

Regarding Affleck's take on Olbermann - hilarious! I respect Olbermann's opinion on certain issues but the SNL parody pricked at the corners of some of his most obnoxious mannerisms, as well as his overinflated ego.

I'm glad to see SNL attacking the odious Olbermann. As I have intimated in a number of satirical Youtube videos on Keith Olbermann (http://www.youtube.com/user/OldGrumpyGuy), he is a hate-monger and a bigot. He is the illiberal face of liberalism, bristling with self-righteousness and seething with anger and hatred against anyone who does not share his views. I love Olbermann, but this was great. Olbermann's self-righteous indignation quotient has been over the top for a while now, and he needed to be lassoed back to planet earth. Not that I don't agree with him 95% of the time.

But I think you're a little paranoid about the "left coast" media. It's not like SNL doesn't attack the left regularly. That bailout sketch you claim had been removed was never removed - I watched it last week.

Bill and Hillary have been reamed by them for years. I didn't watch during the 2004 elections, but during the 2000 elections the Gore impressions were at least as harsh as the Bush impressions. Remember the lock box jokes? That was SNL. Remember the sketch during the recount when they made fun of Gore exaggerating the problems voters had? It was the funniest thing I'd ever seen. Remember the debate sketch where Gore's face was painted orange (he'd used too much makeup during that debate).

I seriously think one of the reasons Gore lost in 2000 was because Darryl Hammond's Gore was just funnier than Will Farrell's Bush (aside from the Strategery moment).

The last two weeks of shows before this election have been ripping the Democrats. Remember the opening sketch last week? Biden and Murtha? And the most hysterical part of the VP debate sketch was the Biden impression.

It's not SNL's fault that Palin provided so much material and Tina Fey was so good at delivering it. As far as not taking down Obama - well they've been easy on McCain too. (Although I will cop to the fact that Darryl Hammond is a lot funnier as McCain than what's-his-name as Obama. Maybe we can just stipulate that whoever Darryl Hammond plays has got a problem).

John Stewart is openly partisan, but even he had a pretty devastating sketch on Obama - the Circle of Life sketch. And the main reason the Republicans are the target of so many jokes over the last years, is that we've had a Republican controlled government for 8 years which has been slinging enough bullshit to stretch from here to the moon. The party in power is going to be taking the hits from the comics. It's just the way it is. Even moreso when they suck as hard as the current one does.

For the late night shows, Letterman seems slightly left wing - certainly after McCain bailed on him. But Jay Leno has always struck me as pro-Republican inasmuch as he's political at all, at least until this year when Bush's approval ratings tanked. I don't watch Kimmel enough to have an opinion - but the Man Show which he came from was no friend of the left, God knows. Same with Mind of Mencia. South Park is more right than left - witness the book "South Park Republicans."

Fox News tried a right-wing partisan comedy news, and it's the ratings that killed it. Not the media.
Basically a lot of what you're complaining about is a combination of selective memory, self-inflicted wounds from the Bush administration, or just the fact that there's a bigger appetite for left-wing comedy than right-wing comedy at this moment in history.

I am neither a Democrat or a Republican, and I am really sick of the idea that the Midwest is filled with either of them.

I quite enjoy Olbermann - his anger balances out figures on the opposing side - but this is brilliant. Then again, I have always liked Affleck. Nice to see him nail something this funny so well.

Satire loses all power when it's applied only to one side. However, when one side offers up more targets for satire than the other, it's hard to complain too much of imbalance.

The captions on that SNL video about the mortgage crisis are back, just so you know. And I love Keith Olbermann, but that didn't stop me from laughing hysterically at Ben Affleck's over-the-top, yet somehow spot-on impression of him.

Hey, Keith himself thought the impression was funny! He played it on his show, proudly displaying one of the cue-cards from the sketch, signed by Ben Affleck himself. To see himself parodied on SNL means that he has arrived - he's big enough that enough people GET IT when he's parodied. I am a huuuuuuuuge Olberman fan and I laughed until my gut hurt. I dunno how you can all it an attack when the subject of it is laughing right alongside it!
