Before I get to my own review of Ben Affleck's "Countdown" sketch, I'd like to point out to my friend and Unusable Signal co-host, Caleb Howe, that SNL is filmed in New York City. That's what they mean when they say "Live, from New York, it's Saturday Night!" That puts them as far away from the "Left Coast" as you can get. I guess they have a pretty weak "Gee-AH-ger-fee" program back in the holler. Also, could you link to a few more of your own stories, Narcissus?
But, I digress. Saturday Night Live's "Countdown" sketch was obviously aimed more at getting brownie points from Caleb and Rupert Murdoch than in being funny. There were a few nice touches by Affleck, and the camera transitions, where Olbermann mixes sincerity with stagecraft, were priceless, but the writing was witlessly one-dimensional.
They nail Olbermann's sometimes-hyperbolic commentary, and Affleck gets the self-satisfied outrage, but they miss by over-reaching. At his "worst," Olbermann could be accused of making mountains out of molehills, but the sketch has him making Everests out of potholes. I guess if they admitted the guy always has at least a kernel of a point, all of their buttering-up of the Hannity Nation would have been for naught.
The "Special Comment" section is utterly devoid of Olbermann's formulaic modulation, the initial crescendo, the pregnant pause followed by the sincere pout, the re-crescendo, and the shattered, emotionally drained sign-off.
The sketch also misses the chance to skewer the other side of his self-satisfaction, the overly verbose jokes followed by the "accidentally overheard" laughter of his studio staff.
Sometimes, I get the urge to agree with conservatives just to try to "seem fair." This is a destructive impulse, destructive to them. If I do that, what incentive do conservatives have to learn and grow?

Diana 11/02/08 1:04PM Ben Affleck's Keith Olbermann by Caleb Howe
Caleb....I agree with your assessment of Affleck's impersonation. It was brilliant! I was just surprised that he would take a shot against such an icon of the left, being the staunch Dem & political activist that he is. He comes to mind as being the most politically-astute actor that I can think of (great when guesting on Bill Maher, may himself run for office someday?). Just picture me LMAO sitting right next to Tommy, who has an annoyed look on his face (but really fighting back laughter).
I do have to qualify this by stating that I am a fan of Keith's, much like Ben himself.

The joke is there are two left coasts. See how that works? It's humor. Although judging by this weak-kneed defense of poor widdew owbermann you haven't turned your humor switch back into the on position after turning it off on Unusable Signal Saturday night, grouchy mcgrouch pants.

Ben Affleck did an absolutely horrible Olbermann--I mean it was pitiful. McCain was funnier last night on SNL than Affleck.

That was the single funniest thing I've ever seen on SNL- Affleck was brilliant and spot on. It was very gratifying on part because I'm not used to seeing such satire directed at ANYBODY on the left. He skewered Olbie right where it counts! Loved it-More please!!

Ah, now Tom...
Affleck is a good buddy of Olbermann's. In fact, I heard that Olbermann was in the SNL studio watching the rehersal.
It was so, so, but I totally LOL'd during the 'special comment' when Affleck was spinning around in the chair for the different camera angle.
That was perfect. As much as I like Olbermann, the whipping around to another camera for affect is total cheese.

"There were a few nice touches by Affleck, and the camera transitions were priceless,"
That's what I was referring to. I threw in a little clarification. That was my favorite part.

Caleb,
whether you were "joking" or not (I say not, you running-water-challenged hayseed), one of the philosophical underpinnings of joking is that people can tell when you're doing it.

"caroline kennedy supports the supporters of her father and uncles murder.william ayers and wife wrote a book celebrating the acts.i wonder if that's why you no longer see her????she must be pissed??" Yes, I was horrified when I found out Obama's good and close friend Willian Ayers and his wife dedicated their book to Sirhan Sirhan, the same guy who murdered Bobby Kennedy. My immediate thoughts went to Ted Kennedy singing a song and then asking people to vote for Obama. OMG! And Sweet Caroline, she must be mortified that she did not know, either!

I've found Caleb far too ethereal for me to understand. :-)

Another philosophical underpinning of humor is it's just a joke. But that doesn't stop you from whining to Olbermann's defense because SNL went "too far" does it? Gather those tears you'e spilt over poor defenseless Ogremann in a glass for me will you? The taste of your bitter sadness over someone on the left being made fun of sustains my soul. Now THAT is ethereal!

I didn't find it all that funny, but then I don't watch a whole lot of Olbermann. I am a bit surprised that McCain's appearances did not get more hoopla. He was brilliant lampooning himself. This guy could have pulled the upset off.
He made me laugh, was a full functioning part of the joke, and (OMG) dared not to take himself too seriously!

Everyone knew it was a parody of Keith Olbermann... no doubt about it! Since Keith Olberman can't possibly be worse ... he must be the best!
