Via FOX comes what is sure to prove just the beginning of the full story of Sarah Palin's vice-presidential nomination. In today's chapter, we learn that when McCain's people started prepping Palin for the national stage, they discovered that the Alaska governor couldn't name the signatories to NAFTA (The U.S., Canada, and Mexico), nor did she realize that Africa was a continent rather than a country. Watch:
And Newsweek has more on Sarah Palin's GOP-funded extreme makeover. Yes, it's worse than first reported:
Newsweek has also learned that Palin's shopping spree at high-end department stores was more extensive than previously reported. While publicly supporting Palin, McCain's top advisers privately fumed at what they regarded as her outrageous profligacy. One senior aide said that Nicole Wallace had told Palin to buy three suits for the convention and hire a stylist. But instead, the vice presidential nominee began buying for herself and her family--clothes and accessories from top stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus.
The Republican blame game just got a whole lot more intense. What's noteworthy about these two items is that they air the dirty laundry that has been piling up beneath the Republican bed. Indeed, the debate is on within GOP circles as to whether Palin represents the party's future, or its further decline. Is "moderate" now a dirty word in the Republican vocabulary, as some on this blog have suggested? Do the defeats of McCain, Christopher Shays and Gordon Smith mean that the path to victory in 2012 will be found only if the party takes a hard right turn as epitomized by Sarah Palin?
According to a new poll, an overwhelming majority of the country has a resounding answer: NO! Only 12% of those surveyed said Palin should be the choice to lead the party the next time around. Even when the sample is limited to Republicans, Palin still comes in third, behind Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee. Oddly, of those three, it is Romney, the guy who is leading the poll, who seems the most moderate (everything is relative).
It is interesting to watch Republican thinkers at this moment in time. Some, like Dick Armey, seem to recognize what exit polls show. With each passing day the GOP has become a party of older, white, Southern men. As astonishing as it sounds, there is now not a single Republican senator in all of New England. But it isn't as if a migration has been underway. We're talking wholesale atrophy. Democratic registration far outweighed Republican over the past four years. And that brings us to George W. Bush. Fiscal conservatives are quick to blame the party's defeat on him. After all, here's a guy whose spending would make any moderate Democrat blush. So, the fis-cons figure, do the opposite. Cut spending, cut taxes, go back to full-scale deregulation. Survival-of-the-fittest Capitalism. The problem? Those too are outdated ideas. In fact, they are the very policies that brought on the financial catastrophe we now face. Besides which, in tough times it's not a winning electoral argument. Seriously, it's not as if John McCain and Sarah Palin didn't try their hardest to make this an election about cutting taxes. They did. It didn't work.
Call this novel "Paradigms Lost," but the Republican party's moment of denoument has not been pretty. While social conservatives can take heart at the passage of three ant-gay-marriage measures, that victory, too, will prove short-lived. Why? Because we are a changing country.
What the GOP has counted on for so long -- and which has worked, by the way -- is that young people and minorities didn't show up to the polls. Well, they did this year. If, for some reason, you've let yourself think that Barack Obama is just a blip on the radar of racial progress, just wait for the coming wave of multi-cultural candidates about to repaint our statehouses, congress and executive branch. Send Louisiana's Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal a text message if you don't believe me. Old, white, southern males are an ever-shrinking portion of our society, and unless Republicans figure this out fast, their party will go the way of the Whigs. Yes, the culture wars are on death's doorstep. Vietnam is meaningless to the bulk of the electorate. Simply uttering Ronald Reagan's name does not a convincing argument make.
That brings us back to Palin. Is she a savior or a spoiler? From yesterday'sWashington Times:
"Sara Palin might be as close to a traditional conservative as we've had on the main stage, but I think she risks being trivialized in much the same way as Dan Quayle--pushed into national leadership before she was really ready and unable to hold the stage," said David Davenport, Hoover Institution research fellow.
"So where will this be sorted out?" asked Mr. Davenport. "I don't think in Congress, where Republican presence is diminished. Not by McCain, who's had his chance and isn't strong philosophically anyway. Not by Palin, who will struggle to hold a place on the stage. I'm not sure any of the other also-rans from this race are likely to carry a lot of clout."
Short of exhuming and reanimating Ronald Reagan, what can the GOP do? I'd give the ball to Jindal and get out of the way. Dump all the "country first" talk and start proposing programs that will help people. Abandon the "less government" vs. "more government" obsession, along with the talk radio hosts who demonize "tax and spend liberals." These bumper stickers are faded and cracked and carry very little meaning anymore.
Palin will now have a couple of years to prepare herself for her next possible run for office. In that time, it would be wise to consider exactly why she has become a star within the party's base. If the answers have to do with competency, expansion of the party, and new ideas, then press forth. If not, well, you know how this one ends already.
Wow--looks like America really dodged a bullet yesterday. Nice to know that a lot of us women out here were not fooled one bit by Palin's professed intelligence, and in fact, called McCain's choice of her as VP just for what it was--desperation.

Palin USED McCain for her own purpose. She said she'd be returning the clothes but it won't have the same value as "used." Maybe it should be auctioned to recover the $150,000. Her family should not have been clothed by the campaign, that is WRONG!
I wonder if Palin can name all 50 states ?????

It is interesting to watch as liberal hatred and disdain for supporters of John McCain plays out. For many Obama partisans, unity is nowhere to be seen. Even those who hate George Bush should admire his determination to seamlessly transfer power to President-elect Obama. Preparation for this day began months ago.
Contrast this presidential transition with that of the 2000 election, when Clinton administration staffers disabled computers, removed “W”s from keyboards, vandalized staff workrooms and refused to assist incoming staff employees. Pranks and vandalism meant to inconvenience rival college fraternities is one thing, but activities that damage public property and could actually cripple the incoming staff’s ability to do the peoples business is inexcusable.
The outgoing Texas team has already demonstrated a great deal more class than the Arkansas chicken-chokers who preceded them. It is not a good sign to learn that Clinton advisor Raum Emanuel was asked to be President-elect Barack Obama’s chief-of-staff. For those familiar with staff management, the chief-of-staff sets the tone for the entire staff team. Mr. Emanuel is not known as a unifier.

At least the Arkansas Governor didn't have to 1) Have his brother rig a state in his favor, 2) Rely on his father's clout to constantly bail him out throughout his life and 3) Have the Supreme Court steal the election for him. But you're right, that's the epitome of class. And do you really want to talk about who is a unifier? Bush has isolated the US and essentially shunned the rest of the world.
Also, liberal hatred or conservative ignorance? We state facts, you scream like Bill O'Reilly.

JV, It is human nature to have some disdain for the opposing team and their supporters, especially after all the mud that was thrown. Give the Obama supporters their victory laps--everything will calm down in a day or two. Both sides should put aside things said and done in the heat of battle--we either help this man fix things, or we are all up the proverbial creek without an oar to speak of. What the Clinton transition team did back in 2000 was disgusting to be sure, and it is refreshing that W and Company are showing signs of being more helpful with the Obama transition team--perhaps they are putting aside their partisan feelings for the good of the country as we are in much more dire straits than when Clinton left office. Then again--we will see what January 20th brings as one can never totally count on civility in the political arena.

John McCain's and Barack Obama both gave wonderful unifying speeches last night. Fortunately he didn't have Gov Palin speak. He was the candidate and it needed to be his speech. She is a fine speaker with great political instinct but it takes more than political instincts to be President. You must have depth knowledge and know how to use it. You must have an understanding of the constitution and the laws. She appears to have neither. You also have to have a strong moral center and know when you are crossing over it when campaigning. I am not sure if she believed what she said but the way she drove the crowds to a frenzy with McCarthy like talk was frightening. It seems like McCain started listening too much to others. I think Hillary lost her way too. Perhaps it was Obama's cool, steady, stick to the issues approach that threw them off. They are use to a more tactical based campaign. They couldn't make the usual attacks of a campaign without looking bad since Obama wasn't doing it back so they kept escalating the attacks. Of course then the press noticed when the attacks got really virelent.

This is a frightening piece that I hope every republican will reflect upon and either demand more respect from it's representatives or kick all of them out!
They knew she was not ready....they knew she was not informed...they knew she was not up to the demands of governing our nation. But for the sake of winnin they deceived their own constituents into believing in her to the point that they were willing to make excuses for her poor Katie Couric interview performnce.
Republicans need to think for themselves again. We are blessed that the majority were sane enough to stop this potential disaster.
I have no confidence in the republican party after the way they conducted themselves in these last few years, but this has caused me to seriously uestion their patriotism when they would jeopardize us all to sit in a seat of power!

The OMD debunked this lie back in 2001. Don't pretend you don't remember. However, you're right that the Chimp administration has been preparing for the transition for months. The shredders have been running night and day, and he's been gutting the EPA and other agencies while he thought no one was looking. Your slimy hero belongs in jail.

This obsession with Palin is getting a bit ridiculous.
You know, an argument could be made that Biden has exhibited some lapses of memory (the whole FDR on TV thing, for one) that to some might suggest the onset of dementia.
Couple that with some peoples' fears that Obama could be a target for assassination, and it's possible we're one shot away from an unstable presidency.
Ridiculous? Perhaps.
But a lot less ridiculous than obsessing over something that, as of last night, is never going to happen.

Where were all of the people that "suddenly" realize now that Palin was idiotic and a stupid choice as a running mate for President? John McCains concession speech was the most articulate, well-spoken and sensible of the whole ordeal. It must have been so from total relief that he was finally rid of the ditz. To have this airheaded albatross around his neck for four years would have been as bad as his ordeal in the Hanoi Hilton. Thank you, America, for granting all of us mercy by sending her slinking back to the tundra. We ducked the bullet this time. Whew!!!
