Obama Good For Gun Biz

The Associated Press is reporting that gun sales have shot up (sorry) since the election of Barack Obama to the Presidency, and of everyone in Congress with a "D" after their names: (h/t Wendy)
MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – When 10-year-old Austin Smith heard Barack Obama had been elected president, he had one question: Does this mean I won't get a new gun for Christmas?

That brought his mother, the camouflage-clad Rachel Smith, to Bob Moates Sports Shop on Thursday, where she was picking out that special 20-gauge shotgun - one of at least five weapons she plans to buy before Obama takes office in January.
The first question that springs to mind is, five guns? What the hell are they hunting in Midlothian, RoboDeer?

If this keeps up, the NRA may never run another ad against a Democrat again. What a scam. They whip their customers into a frenzy about a crackdown that will never come, and laugh all the way to the bank.

Don't take my word for it. The AP talked to Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, and here's his wish list for your cold, dead fingers:
"sensible" restrictions - background checks at gun shows, a ban on military-style assault weapons and cracking down on illegal gun trade. He believes he has the backing of the new administration on those issues, but any fears of a broader crackdown are unfounded.

"The one thing that they agree strongly with us on is that it's too easy for dangerous people to get guns in this country," Helmke said. "I guess if you're a dangerous person you might want to run out there and buy some more, but otherwise you should be OK."
Paul's heart was in the right place, but I'm not sure an anti-gun activist should be urging criminals to hoard guns.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
