The Return of John Edwards

Last night, at Indiana University, John Edwards surfaced for the first time since the National Enquirer proved what seemed impossible, that the infamous publication could run a story that actually turned out to be true, at least in parts. Their scoop--for so long willfully ignored by a skeptical public and mainstream press--that Edwards had been sexually involved with Rielle Hunter, a videographer employed by the campaign, effectively killed Edwards' future in politics. Or did it? Because here he was, back again, on what some are calling a road to rehabilitation. To what end this dusty highway leads, however, is anyone's guess.

Just how far did Edwards fall in the public esteem? Only months after Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama bent to kiss his rings so as to procure his coveted endorsement, Edwards garnered not even a single mention at the Democratic National Convention, much less a speaking role.

Of course, there's no reason that a philandering member of society can't also do a whole lot of good on issues like poverty or what have you, and that was Edwards' focal point during his half hour speech in Bloomington. Lifting up the poor, Edwards declared, remained his life's work, whether or not he holds political office again. No word yet as to how he'll use the $35,000 speaking fee.

Back before the Iowa caucuses, I had the pleasure of hearing Elizabeth Edwards speak at my corner bookstore here in Florida. She was eloquent, real, and right on target with her assessment of the problems facing the country. At the time, I couldn't help but think her a better potential candidate than her husband. After all, she is quicker of wit, more direct, and more personable, to boot.

Yes, yes, I know. Private mistakes are just that, and we all make them from time to time. Infidelity is not a disqualifying mark in so far as employment goes. If it were, we'd have a whole lot more people out of work. And, yes, I still agree with John Edwards on numerous issues. But that he continued to campaign and raise money, all the while knowing that the Enquirer had him right in the cross-hairs, well, that is a transgression not easily forgiven. Or one forgotten because it wasn't mentioned in an otherwise inspiring speech.

And look who else we have in today's "where-are-they-now" file, it's Mark Foley.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
