It's an odd atomosphere here. The writing is every bit as good, and sometimes better, then lots of politcal blogs. And the subjects are similar.

But the comments are markedly different. Why do these people choose to harass you guys? Maybe some kind of registration requirement would help.

This is very, very sad for the many children who will never have a permanent home and family with parents who want and love them. What a shame if this starts a trend in other states with similar agendas.

I'm feeling a little disappointed in you, right about now--but then I'm one of those liberals from California who voted against Prop. 8. And I wasn't just against it because of the fact that it was sectioning out a certain group of our tax-paying society, it was also because I knew that if it stands (and I don't think it will forever), it would lead to the same kind of crap done in Arkansas. I'm simply amazed that nobody thinks to ask foster children if they really care what kind of parents they have? The foster care system in this country is already overcrowded, underfunded, understaffed, & in dire need of troubleshooting--but let's deny those needy kids a home because some of the people who are willing to be foster parents are gay or single. So I ask again, do you really think that the kids in the foster care would rather stay in foster care rather than be in a loving home where the parents just happen to be gay, JV?

I have no problems with homosexuals, none, including legal rights. But I have a big problem with the "They're just like the rest of us" mentality. Because they’re not.

Another blog poster made the point "No one hopes their kids grow up homosexual" Like it or not, deny it or not, attempting to impregnate another man’s feces is perverse behavior.

Many Gay couples have adopted the children of irresponsleble and incapable heterosexual parents.
And have raised and educated some fine, healthy, sane and well adjusted children into responsible and productive adults. Arkansas? They should pass a ban on inbreeding but then again the population would rapidly dwindle.

Interesting thing or three in the text of the act:

1. "Outside of a marriage which is valid...." Presumably they didn't have a proposal to ban gay marriage because it's already banned there.

2. "Cohabiting with a sexual partner." So if I'm "cohabiting" (i.e. living in the same residence) with someone who's *not* a sexual partner, that's OK? Are they actually going to check up? Could be, uh, interesting.

3., and most interesting: "The individual seeking to adopt or serve as a foster parent...." So they (Arkansas in particular, but perhaps the "traditional family values" folks in general) have no problem with single (adoptive or foster) parenthood? Whatever became of Dan Quayle vs. Murphy Brown? When I pointed this out in connection with Bristol Palin, people on the "values" right all said "Well, Levi's going to marry her, so it's OK." This act, and the inference from its language that an "individual" adopts or fosters a child, would seem to strip them of that fig leaf.


BTW, for at least some of the gay adoptive parents I know (and there are more than a few), it was one member of the couple who carried out the adoption, nominally as a single person. Typically because the child came from, and was adopted in, a jurisdiction (state, country, or whatever) that had a restriction like this one. So barring the kind of Big-Brotherism that I mentioned in (2) above, it may well be possible, or even easy, to get around this.

You know, Mr. Christopher, you cannot have it all ways. You dislike the passage of Prop 8 in California, Obamaland if I ever saw it. So Prop 8 was clearly passed by Democrats. Then you turn around and blame the passage of a bill in Arkansas on Republicans. Now, which way does it go? Do people "vote the party line" when they vote, or do they not? That was a really lousy, self-serving article. Surely you can present your views in a more compelling fashiong.
