Conservatives Pass Adoption Ban

Lost, amid the (completely justified) outcry over California's passage of the hateful Proposition 8, is the fact that Arkansas passed an even more heinous bill banning adoptions or foster care by gay, or otherwise unmarried, couples. From the NY Times:
Strong opposition to the candidacy of Barack Obama in Arkansas may have helped conservatives pass a measure blocking the adoption of children by unmarried couples.

The measure, which voters overwhelmingly approved Tuesday and which prevents unmarried cohabitating couples from adopting or fostering children, won strong support from conservatives, exit polls found. The ban affects all unmarried couples but was written with the intent of preventing gay couples from raising children in Arkansas.
The full text of the measure is available here. It seems like a bad joke that the bill was certified by a guy named Charlie Daniels

It seems like it's the current political vogue to somehow blame Barack Obama for the hateful acts of right-wing church groups, but that doesn't wash with me. Many have tried to pin Prop 8 on him, too, citing a high percentage of black voters who supported that bill, but that's like blaming the Great Flood on a glass of water.

The Arkansas measure is a particularly sick extension of the religious right's crusade to marginalize gay people, and owes much of its success to the placement of 350,000 inserts into church bulletins.

I wonder what those good folk will say to the next Bruce Jackson, when he asks why he was denied a wider choice of foster parents?

These people can hide behind their religious beliefs if they want, but I'm here to tell you that you can be a good Christian and still support the care of children by anyone who is able. I'm not sure what voting for this bill makes you, but I can't imagine a God who would bless this.

Our New Approach to Comments

In an effort to encourage the same level of civil dialogue among Politics Daily’s readers that we expect of our writers – a “civilogue,” to use the term coined by PD’s Jeffrey Weiss – we are requiring commenters to use their AOL or AIM screen names to submit a comment, and we are reading all comments before publishing them. Personal attacks (on writers, other readers, Nancy Pelosi, George W. Bush, or anyone at all) and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will not be published, period, to make room for a discussion among those with ideas to kick around. Please read our Help and Feedback section for more info.
