It works for me on two levels. One is that Hillary is an absolutely evil, corrupt, power hungry woman. We all know this, have known it for sixteen years. But these are actually good, er, not bad qualities to have in an Secretary of State. The worst type of SOS would be a naive idiot who believes we can achieve peace through peace love and Kum-ba-ya. Hello John Kerry and Madeline Albright, and good bye thank you very much.
There's no chance Hillary believes that nonsense whatever she might say in public. There's also no chance that she's going to get rolled by any foreign leader, friend or enemy. Heck she's not even going to get rolled by Obama himself, should he ask her to do something that might taint her political future. Which might make things interesting, but should also put a brake on any dangerous ideas out of the Obama presidency. Even if it's just out of Hillary's enlightened self-interest. So yeah, count me in as OK with this one.
But furthermore, it leaves an open senate seat in New York, where the state level Democrats have been in kind of a kerfuffle since Spitzer got caught with the call girls. The current Democratic governor (whoever he is, Spitzer's replacement) will make the nomination to serve out the current term, but then the seat is open in 2010 for a special election, and then again in 2012 as this is when that senate seat is normally up for reelection. The GOP has a more than solid chance here. Names like Pataki, Giuliani, Bloomberg, will all be bandied about, and while these are not exactly Reagan Republicans, they are exactly the sort that appear to do well in a blue state like New York.
Oh and Chuck Schumer's term is also up in 2010. A possible Giuliani/Bloomberg joint run at two senate seats from New York? Now that would be interesting. Almost as interesting as the possibility that governor whatshisname might nominate President (Bill) Clinton to fill out his wife's term. What happens if no. 42 decides he likes the seat?
So yes, Obama, put Hillary in as SOS, it will triple leverage the blog speculation.
