Elton John Would Have Voted No on Gay Marriage

It may be true that civil partnership carries the same rights as marriage in England, but that is not the case in the US. Until there is some federal-level form of civil or domestic partnership, there is no equality with the legal state of "marriage." Perhaps Mr. John should move to Ohio, where even domestic partnerships are prohibited, see if he still feels "equal."

I really do believe that the word marriage causes people to say no. Is there any reason someone would disagree if we call it civil union but with equal rights, as a married couple? I really am trying to figure this out, so any information will be appreciated.

Elton John is correct, both in the UK and in the US. It is incorrect to state that "marriage" of gay partners is somehow validating or, for that matter, superior or preferable to a "civil partnership" (or whatever phrase may be used to convey the same idea). Furthermore, it seems to me that to press the issue of "marriage" is to open a door of argument that is both unprofitable and probably insurmountable, viz. marriage as a religious concept. Who needs the trouble. Religious people, bigoted or otherwise, hardly flinched when the civil partnership question arose and the statutes were implemented with very little opposition. Why enter a battle that is, for all practical purposes, already won?

you don't have to be gay to do the right thing...stand with them

mccain/palin is main stream, townhall, traditional, american politic; not indonesian, hawaiian, kenyan, arabian, nigerian, congo, chicago, organized, politic. not best man win - it's nice guy finish last. america will never be ok again until mccain is in president - twice. amen and allah willing.

To B - I feel the same way, thinking it's the word "marriage" that is causing all the trouble. People want the word marriage to mean a union between a man & a woman. There should be a civil union, a partnership or something else that would mean a union between people of the same gender and it would have all the benifits of a marriage.

It's important to emphasize, as in earlier comments, that England's civil union laws are very different from any in the U.S., and those currently in the U.S. do not provide the same rights that "marriage" does.

It's also important to note that, in the U.S., the Constitution sets up separation of church and state as a cornerstone of our democratic republic. If state and federal governments are to recognize two people in a committed relationship (as they do now, calling it "marriage") that recognition (and the rights and obligations that are a part of it) should be equally available to heteroxexuals and gays and lesbians. Religious communities are, will be and have always been, free to ritualize or not those relationships in any way they choose for their own members, and affording marriage to gays and lesbians will do nothing to change that. However, recognition by the federal and state government is, by law and our founding documents, a matter of equal rights for all.
