Franken Suffers Major Setback in Minnesota Recount

Today the canvassing board met to decide the fate of previously rejected absentee ballots in the Minnesota Senate race recount. The unanimous decision, which included Democratic Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, was that the 12,000 rejected ballots will not be included in the recount.

The Franken campaign was counting on those ballots to turn the tide in their favor. Canvassing board members were quick to make it clear they expect their decision to be litigated.

The recount marches on, and Coleman retains a tight lead. Although this is a serious setback for Franken, both campaigns are stepping up the number of challenges to ballots in the recount. Challenged ballots will be reviewed by the canvassing board after December 5th, and the deadline for the result is December 19th. It is possible that legal actions will continue after that point.
