White House Christmas Tree Arrives

The Associated Press has video of the arrival of the White House Christmas Tree. On a weekend like this, that qualifies as breaking news in politics. The tree is a 20-foot Frasier Fir, and weighs over half a ton.

As you can see, President Bush also took the opportunity to unveil his latest plan for energy independence. He plans to pressure Congress to fund $16 billion in research on the zero-emissions vehicles.

In all seriousness, this puts me in mind of a recent story that made the rounds on the internet, criticizing the White House for sending out invitations for a Hanukkah reception to Jewish leaders that depicted the delivery of the tree.

The First Lady apologized, but as with all such War on (insert holiday here) stuff, I can't imagine a charitable soul being irked by a heartfelt expression of well-wishes. Along the same lines, it isn't very Christmas-y for Bush's opponents to make smirking hay out of it. As with his choice of beverage while traveling, surely the past 8 years have accumulated more worthy criticisms than these?
