Politico's
Mike Allen reports that NBC has named a permanent host for "Meet the Press," White House correspondent David Gregory.
NBC News plans to name David Gregory as moderator of "Meet the Press," infusing one of television's most prized franchises with a sharp edge leavened by a youthful style and versatility, according to network executives.
The plan to anoint Gregory is not final but will be as soon as today, the executives said. NBC spokespeople refused to comment, saying the network would make the announcement.
Meet the Press has been without a permanent moderator since the
untimely death of Tim Russert in June of this year. Tom Brokaw has been
filling in on an interim basis.
Gregory will have high expectations to meet, as MTP is the most popular and prestigious of the Sunday shows.
When I think of David Gregory, two things come to mind. (Three, if you count the word "eyebrows.) First, his
tough questions as a White House correspondent. There were time when it seemed that he was the only one who was trying to get a real answer out of the Bush Press Secretary du jour. This will serve him well in his new job.
The other is his painful backup dance performance to
MC Karl Rove. I want to forget, truly, I do.
Of course, it would be impossible for anyone to replace Tim Russert in the hearts and minds of millions, but Gregory should be a worthy steward of Meet the Press.
