Eliot Spitzer Debuts as Slate Columnist

The AP is reporting that disgraced former NY Governor Eliot Spitzer has a brand new gig:

On Wednesday evening, the online magazine Slate quietly posted Spitzer's first column, headlined "Too Big Not To Fail." It argued against costly economic government bailouts to huge financial institutions.

Jacob Weisberg, the editor-in-chief of the Slate Group, owned by the Washington Post Co., says the semimonthly column will focus on the financial crisis, regulation and government.

The title of the column, interestingly, is also a favorite pillow-talk phrase for Spitzer.

This looks like step one of an image rehab for the ex-guv, who resigned amid a prostitution scandal.

Time will tell how successful he is, but Americans love a good redemption story, and are much quicker to forgive a man in this type of situation.

A lot of people think I've been too hard on Spitzer, but I had my reasons. As it turns out, Spitzer has paid a much steeper price than others guilty of the same crime. Maybe it is time for the world to cut him a break. As a fellow online journalist, I feel I should extend a welcome to my newest colleague.

As for his writing, aside from the headline and the ironic use of "bailouts" as subject matter, I found, on the whole, it was a somewhat dry piece. That's mainly a function of the subject, I suppose.

Keep an eye on this one, and if you see him at a cocktail party, be sure to tell him how much you love his column.
