Turnabout is Fair Play: Obama Picks Shinseki to Head Veterans Affairs

It is nice to have somebody at the top of the VA who understands what is to be in the military. Hopefully he will be able to accomplish some changes. That being said, however, there have often been stories reported where veterans were unable to get needed care and some instances out-right refusal of benefits.
These refusals were the results of individuals whose position was labeled as "Ajudicators" ( spelling ??)
had decided that a claim was not valid or service connected. Some instances were rather ludicrous. One instance cited was a request for disability benefits
due to injuries sustained from "shrapnel" wounds. We all know that such a thing can happen in any line of work , not just while on military service. The adjucator denied the claim or that portion of a claim that pertained to shrapnel wounds.
If Shinseki can cause systematic change in the VA, the more the better. I hope so, but as with all government bureaucracies, one should not hold their breath

IT'S ABOUT TIME THAT THE VA IS HEADED UP BY A MILITARY MAN. HE KNOWS THE RIGORS OF WAR AND ESPECIALLY THE PROBLEMS VETERANS FACE WHEN NEEDING CARE AND SUPPORT. THE GENERAL IS A WOUNDED VIETNAM VET AND AND KNOWS ABOUT THE PROBLEMS THAT AGENT ORANGE HAS CAUSED MANY VETS. I HOPE HE'LL MAKE CHANGES SO THAT VETS CAN GET FAIR AND JUST TREATMENT FROM THE VA.

There is a bill presently pending in the California State Senate and
18 other states ( a prelude to Federal Legislation) that will force
ammunition manufacturers to chemically code all powder, cartridges
and register all ammo by 2009. All presently owned ammo to be
destroyed by
1 July, 2011 including home reloads.
The bill, SB 997, was written by State Senator Mark Ridley-Thomas and
will destroy shooting sports in this state. It will also invoke a $.05
tax per round on all ammo, driving the cost of
shooting out of the reach of many gun owners.
We have had ammo registration before and it didn't work. Under the
1968 Gun Control Act, in the wake of the Kennedy and Martin Luther
King assassinations, 32 billion rounds of handguns ammo was
registered, at great expence. NOT ONE CRIME WAS SOLVED and ammo
registration was stopped in 1986.
Although no crimes were solved, it did give the Federal Government a
backdoor way to
know what firearms you have in case they were to ignore the
Constitution and start
confiscating guns.
Undoubtedly, that is what this registration scheme is all about.

Great- a fresh start. The VA has lead the way in privitization of resources for Veterans in a manner that is not replicated elsewere. It saddens me to see purchasing and supplies for VA hosiptals in the hands of those who will benefit from profits. Some of the challenges faced by our VA hospitals was failure to deliver needed medical items in a timely basis. More recently there was a move to again contract out VA educational benefits determination. Once again to a private company. Currently there is a movement across the nation to land all outpatient VA health servivces, once again to a private company. Where is goverment's responsibility to care for those who have provided for us all? We did not hestitate to mobilize troops for our needs yet when it comes to meeting the needs of veterans we are quick to shift responsibilities to private profit making corporations.

With Obama at the helm, we do not have to hide anymore.

A taste of the ideas doing the rounds in Obama circles is offered by a recent report from the Managing Global Insecurity project, whose small US advisory group includes John Podesta, the man heading Mr Obama’s transition team and Strobe Talbott, the president of the Brookings Institution, from which Ms Rice has just emerged.

The MGI report argues for the creation of a UN high commissioner for counter-terrorist activity, a legally binding climate-change agreement negotiated under the auspices of the UN and the creation of a 50,000-strong UN peacekeeping force. Once countries had pledged troops to this reserve army, the UN would have first call upon them.

These are the kind of ideas that get people reaching for their rifles in America’s talk-radio heartland. Aware of the political sensitivity of its ideas, the MGI report opts for soothing language. It emphasises the need for American leadership and uses the term, “responsible sovereignty” – when calling for international co-operation – rather than the more radical-sounding phrase favoured in Europe, “shared sovereignty”. It also talks about “global governance” rather than world government.

But some European thinkers think that they recognise what is going on. Jacques Attali, an adviser to President Nicolas Sarkozy of France, argues that: “Global governance is just a euphemism for global government.” As far as he is concerned, some form of global government cannot come too soon. Mr Attali believes that the “core of the international financial crisis is that we have global financial markets and no global rule of law”.

So, it seems, everything is in place. For the first time since homo sapiens began to doodle on cave walls, there is an argument, an opportunity and a means to make serious steps towards a world government.
