Gay civil rights have been a hot topic in recent weeks, what with the passage, this election cycle, of anti-gay legislation like
Proposition 8 and
Arkansas' adoption ban.
The debate raged on last night, as Jon Stewart and Mike Huckabee had a long talk about gay marriage on Stewart's Daily Show (video below). Huckabee's opposition to gay marriage is a disappointment to me, as I really thought he was a better guy than that.
The conversation was a textbook case in conservative deflection. Every time Stewart would challenge a Huckabee rationale, Huck would abandon it and simply switch to another one. Huckabee tried to equate gay marriage with polygamy, blame the Bible, compare gay marriage with burning people at the stake, call homosexuality a choice, and finally, ended up on the dictionary.
If you take each shift as a surrender, which I do, then Huckabee's argument seems to rest on the redefinition of words, and the idea that we ought not to do that.
Of course, if you take Huckabee at his word, then you'd have to conclude that he opposes happy marriage. The word "gay" used to mean happy, but over time, its definition has changed. Since Huckabee opposes that sort of change, it is obvious that when he opposes gay marriage, he is referring to the "pure" definition.
I would also submit to Huckabee that, if we're going to stick by his ruling, we had better hop to it and set up a special election so we can choose the
other two-fifths of our President.
