TIME is reporting that Jay Carney will be going to work for Joe Biden, as assistant to the vice president and as director of communications. Conservatives -- who are already skeptical of liberal media bias -- will now have one more reason to suspect that the "unbiased" journalists -- who frequently serve as pundits on TV -- are, in fact, biased.
While Karl Rove is a paid commentator for FOX, for years now, prominent Democratic staffers such as Chris Matthews, Tim Russert, and George Stephanopoulos have been welcomed into the "mainstream" media with open arms. Carney, like Tony Snow and even former Reagan staffer Lyn Nofziger) before him, is going in the other direction, leaving the media for politics.
I have long suspected that Carney was a bit biased in his reporting, but a few months ago, he really crossed the line when he accused conservative bloggers of starting scurrilous rumors about Michelle Obama. Luckily, I saw him make this statement, and pointed out it was actually a Hillary Clinton supporter who started this online rumor. After several other bloggers weighed-in, Carney -- to his credit -- posted a correction.
We live in a complex world, and those of us who report (or even blog) are often faced with ethical conundrums. Still, it's hard to blame conservatives for being suspicious of liberal bias when journalists go from supposed unbiased reporter to political staffers with such ease.
