After watching this weekend's startling video of President George W. Bush ducking two shoes being hurled at his head by an Iraqi journalist in Baghdad, you may be asking yourself, why is that guy so pissed? Or, don't they have cream pies in Iraq?
Well, more news over the weekend may provide some insight. Via the AP:
A detailed official history of the U.S. effort to reconstruct Iraq after Saddam Hussein's overthrow in 2003 blamed its failings on "blinkered and disjointed" prewar planning, a deadly insurgency and wasteful and ill-managed contracting.
The 500-plus page document also asserts that the Bush administration, in early stages of the war, exaggerated the number of Iraqi forces trained to help American troops provide adequate security.
The report, "Hard Lessons: The Iraq Reconstruction Experience" was prepared by the Office of the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction, and can be read in its entirety here.
The summation of the report's dizzying account of mismanagement, outright fraud, and other shoe-baiting tales of woe:
Answering whether the program met its goals to rebuild Iraq and modernize its infrastructure, the report concludes, "Generally, no."
Still, throwing shoes just isn't nice. Then again, the reporter, Nuntathar al Zaidi, had been taken hostage by Shiite gunmen in 2007, and apparently saw the United States' poor planning as one reason why. If, like me, you prefer to voice your frustration in a less physical way, you can always click over to blogslut.com and toss a virtual shoe or two.
I'm no fan of Bush Jr. And while I'm not cheering about it like those in the extremist left, I find it hard to be outraged. I guess I'm just apathetic and can't wait for him to be gone out of office.
At the same time, when Obama takes over the mantle of this, and they start throwing shoes at him, or disrespecting him, I'm going to see if the extremist left have this comme ci, comme ca approach to it. I'm going to head on out on a limb and say, "NAAAAHHHH!"

In the Arab world, showing someone the bottom of your shoe is a major insult. Throwing your shoes at them must be the ultimate dis.

I don’t think it was too difficult to identify the culprit. He is the one who walked out of the press conference in his stocking feet. The Iraqi Security team can surely handle that one.
Anyone need a nice pair of size 10 shoes? They have a few minor scuffs, and very little flight time. I'm told they were once quite close to the POTUS.

If he were to put this country through what the bush crime family did, we'd all throw shoes.
If you consider that in a nation of 24 million, there are 5 million refugees and the Johns Hopkins research indicates about a million noncombatant citizens killed, there's about a 25% chance that someone the reporter knew was tragically affected.
If some 'liberator' did that to the US, I expect we'd throw more than shoes.

Could not get close enough for a good cream pie toss!?!
Considering the "journalist's" physical state this morning, Iraqi security folks do not seem to be laughing it off ....

No fan of Bush, believe me, but this guy is a friggin' journalist. Maybe he could have just requested an interview with Bush? On another note, where the hell was the Secret Service? Napping?

he was obviously welcoming the liberators. I'm sure he was just out of flower petals.
